Out of the Blue

And so we begin with Daylight Saving Time in these parts. I had an early appointment in Manhattan today, so this was an unfortunate day to lose an hour, but it all worked out in the end. As always, going forward, I will enjoy the extra hour of daylight before sundown, and for me personally this has no particular downside, as it is dark when I get up either way.

In our technology advanced world what's the point of daylight savings? There's NO reason for it. Do away with it...

No, I still wouldn't care. I live in central Illinois and have worked jobs where I got up when was dark and it was dark when I left the office. I don't care. I have two suggestions for you. 1) Buy some good window treatments -- there's no reason for you having to know when the sun is rising in your bedroom if you don't want to know. You certainly can't tell in mine. 2) If the sunrise and sunset times where you live are unsatisfactory, move. Isn't it great to live in a "free" country!

and half the online game doesn't even work (can't connect to people who aren't on my friends list). Nintendo really dropped the ball and promised way too much.

Always been a problem with nintendo. They fear online, and want to keep that "kid friendly" image, even if it means crippling their online games...

They need to move into the 21st century...

I could see playing it easily with a Gamecube type controller

...or you could just use a GC controller

Supports wiimote held sideways, wiimote/nunchuk (with and without gestures), classic controller, and GC.

No pointer functionality AT ALL, which is a REAL bummer in the UI, and a HUGE annoyance in the level editor.

Charlie how is it playing it with the Wii-mote? I could see playing it easily with a Gamecube type controller, but for some reason I can't get a mental picture out of my head of 2 people playing Street Fighter 2 and flailing

The online play was why I pre-ordered my Smash Brawl copy. Too bad the online play SUCKS ASS. Really laggy and half the online game doesn't even work (can't connect to people who aren't on my friends list). Nintendo really dropped the ball and promised way too much. Hopefully this will all get fixed up somehow..

Offline, the game is awesome.. but i got the game to have online play with people at a moment's notice.

I couldn't care less about what time the sunrise and sunset is

You would if you lived a little further north. In the summer, up here (WA) it's dawn around 4:45 AM, and dusk is around 10. If they *didn't* do the "daylight saving time" thing, dawn would be at 3:45 AM - - which, from my perspective, is ridiculous.

I can understand why folks down south don't want the change, because the sunrise/sets are about the same. But up here it does make a difference ...

I couldn't care less about what time the sunrise and sunset is, I simply don't want to have to deal with the time change.

Agreed wholeheartedly. Just set it at one time and stick with it.

And yes, I am up at 5:30 every (weekday) morning and see the sunrise.

I couldn't care less about what time the sunrise and sunset is, I simply don't want to have to deal with the time change. I don't want to deal with Outlook breaking the meetings in my office in one of two ways, depending on whether the meeting is "owned" by someone in AZ or someone in IL. It's especially annoying now that they changed the dates for it, so every "automatic" update written in the past 25 years is broken too. Fucking idiots. The time is the time, leave it be.

I will consider my life complete if the government of this country can be convinced within my life time to end this utterly asinine practice.

What's wrong with having sunlight until 8 o'clock in the evening? Do you really get up at 5 AM often enough to miss the early dawn?

I picked up Ace Combat 6 today (beautiful game)

Fun too. Some of the missions get a little insane, though... there's one mission where you have to liberate 3 sections of a beach, taking out both air and ground targets, and then enemy reinforcements show up...you run out of ammo and they just expect you to land, rearm, and get going again, while your fellow pilots seemingly fly around and make wisecracks.

And boy, are the movies between missions cheesy!

and saw a entire Super Smash Brothers whatever full of copies. I'm trying to understand what all the hooplah is over it, but the only thing I can come up with is Wii owners finally have 4 good games to play

I can't speak for the new version, but on the Cube, it was all about gameplay...

Thankfully the PC, Cable Box and Cell Phone all update automatically cause I didn't know that time changed until 3pm (or 4pm depending on your internal time zone).

As for the FoxTrot comic, I picked up Ace Combat 6 today (beautiful game), and saw a entire Super Smash Brothers whatever full of copies.

I had thought about this earlier: the name Daylight Saving Time is inaccurate in that we don't really "save" any daylight time, with the way I parse the term anyway; a more suitable term would be something along the lines of "Time-Shifted Daylight Time," with the period we know as "Standard Time" either kept the same, or termed "Unshifted Time." Of course, this is more unwieldy. Why we don't just split the difference, set the clocks half an hour earlier or later (depending on the "Time" period) is beyond me.

Then again, I am not a chronologist.

Oh well.. time to make dinner.

EDIT: And just now I read the OotB linked article on DST...
