Red Baron Returns

Stainless Games announces the release of Red Baron, a World War I aerial combat game developed by Stainless Games. Red Baron is also the title of a beloved game following a similar theme released by Dynamix in 1990 (thanks Gamer's Hell). Another unusual aspect of this game is that it is only being sold through Wal-Mart. A PS3 version is in the works, and here's word on the PC edition:
Red Baron returns to PC with intense dogfighting capable of supporting up to 8 players online.

Red Baron is an engaging arcade flight-shooter set in World War I where the player battles numerous enemies in a vast array of levels. Dogfight against intense computer AI in single player or wage war against 7 other aspiring "Aces" online. Take to the skies and rise through the ranks to ultimately become the "Ace" in Red Baron's squadron.

Features Include:

        • Dogfight in 21 highly detailed World War I Aircraft

        • Conquer all 24 challenging Single Player Missions

        • Engage up to 8 Players in Online Multiplayer in three modes: Deathmatch, Team-Deathmatch and Capture the Flag

        • Experience World War I air-war intensity through next-gen graphics

There had been a Red Baron game announced for XBLA. Wonder if this was it. I figured it would be some top-down awful crap like the Wing Commander game.

Red Baron is still unmatched for WWI dogfights. Even Red Baron II fell far, far short in features (let alone all the bugs.) How many flight sims from back then had volumetric clouds to hide in? How come the sequel didn't? I somehow doubt this does.

Also, this is from the guys that brought us Novadrome, very likely the worst XBLA game...

Yeah, this was something back in the day, but I really can't see any draw for it now apart from some old school gamers for sentimentality.

I remember getting it for the Amiga for christmas.
It ran with like 0.25 fps on my A500. That game was a huge reason why I switched to PCs 1 year later.
And man, when I got it for the PC, it was fantastic! Loved Aces over the Pacific, over Europe and of the Deep too!
I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

WOW! This came out of left field.

I'm guessing this isn't a remake of the '90's simulation, huh.

....and not available in stores, only online.

...And not listed in the Canadian online store.

Not a great marketing strategy from my point of view.

I could never get into the Red Baron games. The planes are just too ugly, IMO. :-P

If it has realistic(ish) physics, meaning all of the basic principles are there- stalls and so forth, this could be a fun little game. I don't mean modern flight-sim realistic, but if it's as realistic as the original Red Baron, that would be perfect.

Red Baron along with the later Aces Over X series are easily amongst my all time favorites. Red Baron in particular though.

Does no one release demos anymore? I know its just an arcade-style sim, but the screens look neat and I think it would be worth a free flight.
