StarCraft II Ads Correction

Blizzplanet has a clarification from Blizzard, who say that Activision CEO Bobby Kotick's comments about the potential for ads for StarCraft (story) do not actually reflect plans to place them in the RTS sequel. Apparently he was referring to the potential to put ads where they already exist according to their explanation:
We have no plans to have in-game advertising in StarCraft II. We believe Bobby was actually referring to Battle.net, which has always included ads

I could just see the gang at Blizzard after the shit hit the fan...'Are you fucking crazy telling people we're putting ads in-game???!!! What are you? Stoned?'

Nice to see gamers everywhere come together to put a reminder out so forcefully about how we feel about this shit. How ya like it now, Roper?

I'm not sure how you could even put in-game advertising in such a futuristic universe. Terran Marines drink Mountain Dew, or something?

Well you have to remember it's really Activision/Vivendi, the only reason they are using Blizzard is due to WoW's success.

And why would you sell off a company that's making buttloads of money, and on top of that can choose to do whatever they want?

It's not about how much money they could make Tumbler (as they make tons anyway) it's how much money would they loose due to the backlash.

If they wanted to keep their company pure and strong I don't think they'd have partnered up with Activision. My feeling is that the fine folks at Blizzard are getting ready to hand over the reigns and retire or at least take a huge step back. There has never been a better time to sell Blizzard, it's a friggin cash register right now with Wow and with some of the creative talent in that company I'm sure they could get some sort of in game advertising that would not offend players.

But at the same time Blizzard is very 'anal' about what goes into their games and what fits the universe and history of it.

I kinda have to agree with Elf, Blizzard is smarter than that. Besides, why would they advertise when their games sell millions of copies anyway?

I'd be shocked if there was not a huge internal debate about using in game advertising. I'm guessing this is the direction the CEO "wants" to take the game and the folks in Blizzard are fighting against that.

We're talking hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising per year if they sold in game advertising on WoW and SC2.

Most of the ads I remember on battle.net were for Warcraft books and the like. I imagine with the Blactivision merger they'll ad(d) activision properties to the mix so they can leverage blizzard's success.

Blizzard was just prepping for those low price point markets (ie china) to make up the difference. Korea and Western Civilization will just see ads for the SC II expansion pack tentatively called "Zergling Stomp"

Or, devil's advocate, (I don't really belive this but I'll throw it out there) they were testing the waters and thinking of doing in game ads and this outcry convinced them not to

I guess my issue is with all you dip shits hearing a rumor or something out of context, and declare that it MUST be true and the end of the world.

Blizzard has way more class then that.

Sounds like someone at Activision was just running their mouth and Blizzard stepped in and reminded them who runs the company.

I hope this bears out to be true in the final product. I really thought Blizzard had more sense than that.
