Ads in StarCraft II?

IncGamers highlights an overlooked tidbit mentioned by Activision CEO Bobby Kotick in his recent talk at the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference that leaves the door open for in-game ads for StarCraft II:
Kotick says that, on the Blizzard side, the company has started to think about how Starcraft - as a short session experience - can actually be the model for in-game advertising and sponsorship and tournament play and ladder play for the future.
"These are the early days, but these are the kinds of things that have come out of just the first few months of integration planning," he said.

Such as, if there were to be a big Burger King billboard in StarCraft 2, but it had a catchphrase like, "warp jump today? Go full." with a picture of a Zerg holding a burger and "Turn left, 2,000 LY Past Jupiter", that would at least fit in to the game and be somewhat funny.

Splashdamage said the same spiel right up until they announced that Enemy Territory: Quake Wars would have in-game advertising.

When? They had the ad boards in the game during the first beta's. As far as I can recall, it was always planned to be in ET. Don't recall them ever saying they wouldn't.

Not really, if it had come about it would of put alot of people off considering the uproar it caused.

Actually Skaven, you do have lots of ads in the middle of your DVD movie. Product placement has been huge in movies and TV shows for decades.

Yep your totally right, my bad. I guess seeing so many ads on a day to day basis has kinda become the norm now that I don't even notice it in movies.

while we know its been confirmed its not happening.
I still don't get how it bothers anyone, do you actually stop and look at the ads? Its just another part of a game to ignore imo and you shouldn't even blink at it.

Blizzplanet has a clarification from Blizzard, who say that Activision CEO Bobby Kotick's comments about the potential for ads for StarCraft (story) do not actually reflect plans to place them in the RTS sequel. Apparently he was referring to the potential to put ads where they already exist according to their explanation:

We have no plans to have in-game advertising in StarCraft II. We believe Bobby was actually referring to Battle.net, which has always included ads

Gotta laugh at the people that were freaking out about this.

why is it such a big deal, product placement is everywhere in our lives you shouldn't need to even think about it when you see it.

We're constantly bombarded by ad's day in day out, some forms of this are highly obnoxious. From TV adverts, to speakers blasting things off the tops of buildings, to every flat space plastered with some type of 'buy me now' advert. Games are supposed to be a form of escapism, fun and relaxation from the things in that daily grind. Adding elements from it, remind you what you're going to experience the next day even at a subconscious level and increase your stress.

Isn't that the point? We are bombarded by ads in every other aspect of our waking lives. Why should we just roll over when another venue for entertainment slides into being a mass-market advertising vehicle?

Exactly...which is why I don't want ads in my escape from reality through video games.

That is, unless the ads are cleverly disguised to fit the theme of the game.

If the do this, this will be the beginning of the end of Blizzard as a company gamers love. Take a caution Blizzard.
When you start utilizing ads, it's when you and I part ways.

Ads = nosale for me. There are other RTS games I'm looking forward to, and I'll live without Starcraft 2.

IF they want to put ads in something I've already paid for, then I'm afraid I need to pay less for the game, or be paid myself for watching them. It's my fucking time. I do vote with my dollar, and while I expect SC2 to be a raving success in Korea alone, there's no way in hell I'll pay for something with ads in it. It's the equivalent of network TV. Free? OK. I pay for it? Nope, ain't gonna happen.

I don't care where the ads are. If they're IN the game, I ain't buying it.

These ads (if they happen) will probably come in the form of banners on the top and the sides of the B.net client application itself. I doubt very much Blizzard would put a Tampax ad on Aiur.

I recall a few assholes here stating how PC Gaming is dying and justifying in game advertisements. Too bad the two primary companies that do this, EA and now Blizzard, are no where near hurting financially. Just another excuse to squeese more juice ($) from each of us.

Keep on defending the game companies, devs and distributors. Its all overriced horse shit anyways.

Or it'd be used to run battlenet. Of course, it's free now. So not sure why they'd change that (unless they expect so many players as to make BNet lose too much money). I thought it already had ads though. I haven't been on BNet for quite a while. And that's if SC2 is going to even use BNet.
