if you sell 10,000 games, and see 40,000 different IPs connected to a server to ply online or to download a patch, what do you think is happening?
It means two things: Your game doesn't even use a rudimentary CD-key authentication server and that the game was pirated a lot. However, neither of those mean that those 30,000 pirates would have otherwise bought the game. You'd be amazed by what people will download when it's free. Just check out the number of downloads that Uwe Boll's movies have had.
You can deny it all you like, but why the hell is everyone (even my pc-loyal old employer) shifting 100% to consoles?
1) Console players have lower standards.
2) Console games get much more marketing.
3) Console games are easier to make.
4) Microsoft and Sony like to "motivate" developers to make games exclusive to their platforms.
5) Console games make more money.
Note that 5 is directly correlated with 1 and 2, among many other factors.
