It's free, so it's probably a market experiment. Means it's got one executive championing it, but can't convince his or her associates. So they're giving it a few computers to run on and see if it becomes popular enough to sell a "next gen" version, which will sound much better due to marketing making a better name, and hyping up "new" features that aren't actually new. Said room-temperature IQ people will jump on the wagon and buy "Teh nu SiMs OnlinE", and make Poser based nude skins galore. Everything will be wonderful!
EA hasn't gotten as big as it is by appealing to intelligent people. It makes games that will impress the mediocre. It buys things that sell well, then makes their production more efficient so it can squeeze every coin from it (reducing quality in the process, because the talent that works on the games are burnt out, no longer care, and lose any passion for the games they had when they were an independent company)
Other companies have to do the same to compete.
Hurray for EA, the most fucked up evildoers in the bidness! Making it safe for medocrity in gaming everywhere since 1982.
Realistically, I've played a lot of their games, as have probably everyone on this forum, many of them have been good, and when it was smaller, EA was (or seemed) to be a better company. It's only after ashole moneylovin SOBs realized they could make a quick buck in the gaming market that things started going downhill.
This is why so many mods to games are such fantastic works, as the people that care about them work on them, they can't afford to build an engine or the background art, but in their spare time they have the passion to make something that you can tell they cared about.
