The Sims Online Becomes EA-Land

EA-Land is the name of a new online world born from the ashes of The Sims Online. This article outlines the revival, which says the new version "offers several improvements on the first game," not the least of which is that it is free. The environment is described as being similar to that of Second Life, with the distinction being EA's willingness to screen in-game content, so there will probably be fewer flying phalluses.

EA-Land has been re-designed with Smart Users in mind.

Ah, the classic "You are SMART!" marketing gambit...

I think DEREK SMART trademarked that

The problem is that Comic Sans does look good. There is a reason it is used so much. It's a clear, readable font that has a very casual feel.

Comic Sans is overused, but that doesn't mean it's a bad font... it's a great font, that is greatly abused and overused. But a casual game website is a relatively appropriate use of the font, so I'm not gonna dis 'em for it.

There are a vast sea of valid reasons to dis EA, but Comic Sans isn't one.

It's free, so it's probably a market experiment. Means it's got one executive championing it, but can't convince his or her associates. So they're giving it a few computers to run on and see if it becomes popular enough to sell a "next gen" version, which will sound much better due to marketing making a better name, and hyping up "new" features that aren't actually new. Said room-temperature IQ people will jump on the wagon and buy "Teh nu SiMs OnlinE", and make Poser based nude skins galore. Everything will be wonderful!

EA hasn't gotten as big as it is by appealing to intelligent people. It makes games that will impress the mediocre. It buys things that sell well, then makes their production more efficient so it can squeeze every coin from it (reducing quality in the process, because the talent that works on the games are burnt out, no longer care, and lose any passion for the games they had when they were an independent company)

Other companies have to do the same to compete.

Hurray for EA, the most fucked up evildoers in the bidness! Making it safe for medocrity in gaming everywhere since 1982.

Realistically, I've played a lot of their games, as have probably everyone on this forum, many of them have been good, and when it was smaller, EA was (or seemed) to be a better company. It's only after ashole moneylovin SOBs realized they could make a quick buck in the gaming market that things started going downhill.

This is why so many mods to games are such fantastic works, as the people that care about them work on them, they can't afford to build an engine or the background art, but in their spare time they have the passion to make something that you can tell they cared about.

...and just to add insult to injury, they have adopted Comic Sans as their EA-Land webpage font. This lot are geniuses.

They realize only people with room-temperature IQs will play EA-Land, so they don't need to make it look good.

No comment on the name...but the EA-Land About Page says:
Every Wednesday we stop the game for a few hours and add new features before restarting it.
That's kind of crazy. I haven't heard of an MMO being "rebooted" every week to add more crap...then again, I don't play any MMO's or much of anything online.

On the positive side, only spending 2 seconds to come up with that name has left them with so much more time to create AMAZING NEXT-GEN TITLES!!!!!!!

Wow. Out of a long line of bad name choices from developers and publishers over the years, that is possibly the single worst one I've ever heard. It's got it all: it's terribly non-creative, it's pompous and obnoxious, and with the stigma attached to EA, they might as well have named it "Hail-Satan-Land."
