Red Alert 3 Announcement

The official press release announcing Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 is online, offering some details on the RTS sequel, and saying that purchasing Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath will entitle players to get early access to the game's beta test. Here's a portion of the lengthy announcement:
In Red Alert 3, the desperate leadership of a doomed Soviet Union travels back in time to change history and restore the glory of Mother Russia. The time travel mission goes awry, creating an alternate timeline where technology has followed an entirely different evolution, a new superpower has been thrust on to the world stage, and World War III is raging. The Empire of the Rising Sun has risen in the East, making World War III a three-way struggle between the Soviets, the Allies, and the Empire with armies fielding wacky and wonderful weapons and technologies like Tesla coils, heavily armed War Blimps, teleportation, armored bears, intelligent dolphins, floating island fortresses, and transforming tanks.

Red Alert 3 asks the question “What If?” What if every bizarre research project and technology experiment for the last 70 years had actually borne fruit? What if the Philadelphia Experiment, time travel theory, teleportation, invisibility, Tesla technology, and a hundred other intriguing research projects had all paid off and gone mainstream? What if the Soviet Union survived and thrived; what would it look like 10 years in the future? What if the Japanese Empire had never fallen and instead became the ultimate high-tech military superpower? The end result is an imaginative and playful vision of an alternate future filled with possibility.

Command & Conquer fans eager to experience Red Alert 3 before anyone else can get early access to the beta (available for the PC only - an announcement about the Red Alert 3 beta dates will be made this summer) by picking up a copy of Command & Conquer™ 3: Kane’s Wrath later this year.

Yeah, hit points are realistic. Oh wait, that's exactly like every single other RTS. Fail.

Um, I don't know of any other RTS that lets you destroy specific areas of structures.

If that's all you can think of for innovation (if unit behind X, then damage reduction Y), then my point still stands.

The cover system affects gameplay pretty significantly.

Have you actually played CoH?

Aside from that, I don't really understand what kind of innovations you are looking for. There have been plenty since Battlezone. Hero units, units with inventories, unit leveling, special limited-use powers, realistic ballistics, locational unit damage, realistic structural damage, intricate cover systems, unit morale... if these don't constitute innovations, I'm not sure what does. It sounds like you want the entire genre to be changed into another genre or something.

I think Myth 1, 2 and 3 all have full co-op campaigns. Which were pretty awesome. They didn't have building or unit construction though.

Actually, that is pretty awesome. Are there any other RTS's that have a full coop campaign?

"realistically destructable buildings"
Yeah, hit points are realistic. Oh wait, that's exactly like every single other RTS. Fail.

"realistic cover system"
Eh. If that's all you can think of for innovation (if unit behind X, then damage reduction Y), then my point still stands.

According to Gamespot, this game's campaign will be fully co-op playable. That's pretty great, IMO, even if other RTS companies have long surpassed the C&C franchise.

It's been a long time since there were any real innovations.

Company of Heroes was pretty innovation. Added realistically destructable buildings and a realistic cover system.

Sounds like they took all the rejected ideas they've been brainstorming over the past 10 years and said, "Hey, lets just go ahead and use this crap. They'll buy it if we call it 'wacky and wonderful'!"

Or maybe I'm just tired of the whole RTS genre. It's been a long time since there were any real innovations. The last that I remember was Battlezone, where you could drill down to a sort of FPS mode.

tho im pretty sure red alert was originally meant to tie in with the tiberium timeline in some way.

the first one did (in the final cutscenes, if i remember correctly) but in the second was no connection anymore.
but yuri was great anyway

"....restore the glory of Mother Russia"

No need for time travel. Courtesy of massive oil revenues, Putin's on his way to doing just that right now...

...and in the worst possible way.

have you ever considered, you know, talking about gaming on these boards?

anyway, the screenshots look promising. tho im pretty sure red alert was originally meant to tie in with the tiberium timeline in some way. but eh!
