David Jaffe sounds like an idiot.

What would gaming be like if all we had was the Wii? We'd have low system specs incapable of playing the big action games with the newest graphics that we currently have on the PS3 and 360 and PC. We'd be stuck with the wii nun-chuck (sp?) that have caused people to hurt themselves and others, break their TV's and other belongings.

What if all we had was the 360? Crappy, noisy, and over-heating hardware that charges an additional fee for their online service, then don't take any preparations for the holiday surge of new blood and even under staff the service during the same time.

PS3...haven't really found a downside to my PS3 yet, other than the online service isn't very robust, but that will change this year when Playstation Home is launched.

how about a cock like attachment so all of the morons that have hurt themselves with it or damaged items can now put this new attachment on and go fuck themselves (literally).

might protect all those LCD and plasma tvs

I'll bet this is precisely why they don't want it. Look how many idiots broke their TVs because they have issues with being fucking stupid and throwing the controller. Nintendo received some bad PR for that and fixed the problem, but I can easily see why they'd avoid the whole thing now. Weren't there threats of lawsuits with that?

OH NOOOOZ TEH LIT3SABERZ W1LL K177 PE0P73ZZZZZZZZ!!!!11!!1

Seriously though, as long as this touted lightsaber game is decent I don't think we need another hokey peripheral to attach to the wiimote.

I'm sure this is a bad analogy, but following the logic of Nintendo - shouldn't car companies make it impossible to chip/mod/NOS their products? I'm sure there are millions of other similar issues with other products...

Besides, having a lightsaber on it (a soft spongy one) might protect all those LCD and plasma tvs when kids do the 'lightsaber boomerang thing' right?

“Can anyone explain to me how having one console would be bad for gamers? Or game developers for that matter?,”

I think the hidden meaning is that last sentence. Gamers want competition, it's what keeps things interesting. Developers just want to get lazy. Sure we can just call it the P-Wii 360, that sounds catchy. The next thing they'll want is a standardized spoken language so they don't have to make multi-language support. . .

I remember when I saw "Demolition Man" and the winner of the restaurant wars was Taco Bell. My first thought was "oh, I hope not!"

Jaffe's analogies with the DVD and VHS arguments are off-base. Yes, the format has/had been standardized, but there were dozens of manufacturers making players with dozens of different feature sets, just as the different consoles available now provide different feature sets.

Having a standardized coding platform would only benefit publishers and developers. Consumers would suffer in the long run because publishers would only shoot for the lowest common denominator and publish untold multitudes of hastily cranked out crapware. Quantity would overrule quality in the misguided hope that one of the multitude of titles would be a hit.

Console manufacturers would have no reason to ever improve their products before the market becomes completely saturated and they need something new to sell or games on PCs become so much better that people stop buying console games. Then, and only then, would there be a new console and the cycle would begin anew.

If this is the future of gaming, I'll find something else to do with my time and money.

No thanks. I'd rather have innovation and competition over massive amounts of shitty content.
