Midway, Sony, and Ubisoft versus EGM?

Video Game Media Watch reports on an editorial by EGM editor-in-chief Dan Hsu alleging that Midway’s Mortal Kombat development team, Sony’s sports game division, and Ubisoft have all banned EGM from further coverage of their products (thanks Shacknews). The issue is said to be EGM's previous negative reviews of these company's products, which relates to other recent stories of publishers attempting to exert influence on game journalism. Their efforts at getting the companies named in the editorial to respond have so far been unsuccessful. Hsu is quoted as saying that EGM “won’t treat these products or companies any differently."

Well, this kind of thing may affect 1up.com (EGM's Web site) as well.

Guess the question is, with the Internet, why even deal with magazines anymore?

PCGamer use to be staple in my gaming (when they use to have 300 page issues), but now they are more advertisements then anything else. Not only that but they are more or less just PR for Publishers who give them 'exclusive' 10 page previews, and totally skip how bad a game sucks (Hellgate London).

I also believe that if the publishers specifically state as much, no screenshots or other artwork can be used, especially if they run out and buy a copy of the game (that shrinkwrap EULA is pretty strict about that)

THose companies can "ban" reviews by pulling ads from EGM if it reviews their products...thereby financially damaging the magazine, possibly putting it out of business.

banned? You can't ban reviews or other news coverage - in the UK or EU, at least. They can ban their PR teams from giving them info and cancel any dispensation on copyrighted images etc. But a limited amount of otherwise copyright/IP material is specifically allowed to be reproduced in the public interest/common good, and there is no stopping anybody publishing any comment they like provided it is not actually libellous.

(EGM is based in USA)

I am in the US, and as I understand it the same thing applies here. There is nothing stopping them from going out and buying a copy of the game and reviewing it, so long as the article is truthful there is nothing they can do about it.

However they would have a hard time getting their hands on a preview copy, or any interviews, etc.

Do you have a single fact to back that up?

I stopped reading game reviews..umm.. about the time I stopped reading Nintendo Power to figure out which NES games to buy.

Seriously, in the current environment a game review site or magazine cannot stay profitable without selling out. It's a sad truth. They literally cannot afford to alienate their advertisers with a bad review.

Do you have a single fact to back that up?

If you are shocked at this as well as Hillary Clinton winning her zone, then you seriously need to get out of your cave.

Everything is "influenced($)" if you get my drift.

Actually, EGM has been pretty outspoken on review credibility

I haven't looked at the since the early 90s...they were a bit if a trade rag back then.

Ads for gold selling sites were banned from the mag, and their editor made a public statement about their stance on them.
I think PCGamer did that, too...

Props to EGM. Maybe if those companies put out some decent games they might get some good reviews. Mmm REVOLUTIONARY!

Mortal Kombat has always been a steam pile of dung after the 2 or third installment. It was novelty in the 90's that you could have 'live action' fighters doing gory shit to each other.
Milking the same old crap for 10+ years when the rest of the industry has moved on is eventually going to net you some crappy reviews.

Actually, EGM has been pretty outspoken on review credibility as well as advertising that negatively affects the industry. Ads for gold selling sites were banned from the mag, and their editor made a public statement about their stance on them. Not sure where that lives now though.
