DS, i applaud you releasing your games for free. Here, you are doing something 99% of the publishers out there would balk at, and your GETTING FLAMED FOR IT! Preposterous as far as im concerned. Just ignore the brats and trolls looking for attention.
We're not flaming Derek for releasing his game for free, that I will agree is nice. What we are flaming him about is the fact that the game is horrible, mostly from the interface aspect.
I brought this thread up in a discussion with my math major colleague. He thought the game's AI was fantastic but the UI was way too convoluted. He jokingly states, "the command lines alone was three pages long; all 10 point Arial." Anyone familiar with stuff printed in 10 point Arial knows that's a ton of commands.
I also played the Battlecruiser game and, like my math major colleague, found the user interface full of forgettable acronyms. To date I've NEVER read a game manual. Derek's game is the ONLY game I've ever had to do this. Even after reading it the UI still didn't make a damn bit of sense.
Derek in all the flames I think what we're collectively saying is that if the user interface was simplified your game would probably be much more fun. Does this mean the game would be dumber? No. It means it would be more intuitive and accessible to the masses. You say your game is a niche game and that you don't care about the masses. Then why issue these press releases? Press releases are an attempt to garner new players. If you want new players you are going to have to redesign your user interface, it's as simple as that.
I would retry your game if the interface was intuitive.
If you lash back at me for making this honest suggestion then I throw my hands up in the air.
