Derek Smart rules. I will never understand why people flame a guy for making games.
I've personally never played any of his games because I do not have the time, but I give the man credit for doing what he loves to do and making a good living doing it.
Thanks Mr. Smart for releasing your games as freeware. I wish there were more developers like you.
I love what I do and I'm very passionate about it. I am not and never was in this for the money. With my experience, skills and qualifications, if I weren't making money from this, I'd be back in the IT field pulling a $250K a year job. Easy. I would never - ever - consider working for anyone in the gaming industry. Ever.
By the time my game's lifespan expire, I would have already made whatever money I put it into it. So, instead of sitting on the IP, I release it for free as a goodwill gesture to an industry which, for the most part, has been good to me and which allows me to make a decent living without doing the usual slave labor song and dance for some corporation.
I have thus far released four of my games, from each major generation: BC3K (Take 2), BC3K v2 (Interplay), BC Millennium (EB Games exclusive) and now Universal Combat (Dreamcatcher). http://www.3000ad.com/site/free_games/
And to this day, even the much - much - older ones which everyone yells at me for, are still charting on Internet download sites e.g.http://www.fileplanet.com/section.aspx?s=49748&v=0
In a few years, others in the new GALCOM series will also be released for free.
Game developers are just human beings who happen to make games for a living. If you want to hold us up to higher standards of conduct, then go ahead
...but don't be surprised if we don't uphold them
