The Witcher Demo

The Witcher Website now offers downloads of a playable demo for The Witcher, CD Projekt's recently released action/RPG, though word is "Links currently don't work for people in United States - the appropriate ones will be given as soon as possible." To that end, manual downloads are available from ComputerGames.ro, FanGaming, FileFront, FilePlanet (registration required), Gamer's Hell, and PixelRage. The demo is accompanied by this blurb: "We encourage anyone who’s been on the fence about the game to check out the demo and to begin their adventures in the world of The Witcher."

The 1.2 patch would be nice, also.
Hopefully the demo doesn't allow travel to the Trade Quarter, because altho parts of it look and act great (like most of the rest of the game), there are other parts that look like your desktop, since the game crashes regularly in this area.

I'd be all over this game, if it wasn't for the hideous loading times every review mentions.

I was on the fence as well. The game looks and sounds awesome except for a few major inconsistencies such as horrendous loud times and repeating NPC character models. Hopefully this demo shows the good and the bad.

Looking forward to trying this.

I'm not going to let any load times make or break a game for me. It's always something.

Normally I'd agree... But when literally 50% of your time "playing" a game is spent staring at a loading screen, that's a little nuts. From what I hear, what's worse is that there are the long loading screens for everything, including entering or leaving a simple interior space. Now that's just silly.

Regardless, I'm going to try the demo so I can see for myself.

This is a great game, I was pretty impressed with some of the cut scenes & gameplay elements. The boxing was kind of a fun new twist as well as the adult theme. Good RPG overall & well worth your hard earned $$$

BUT!! I does need the 1.2 patch to play well & hopefully it will be out very soon.

The absolutely horrendous loading times in the current version cant be stressed enough. I honestly didnt think I'd care so much about it when i purchased the game but, but i had absolutely no idea how bad it would be. Let alone how frequent you have to load something.. Throw in the frequent crashes, and you've got one hell of a package.

You really do spend half your time staring at the damn loading screen. With this in mind, the game is really poorly designed since it requires you to leave and enter lots of little buildings/shops to talk to the people inside. I've only gotten as far as Visima, and that's when I'd had enough and quit. When they knew they had an engine which sucks ass in the loading-department, the very least they could've done was drop all that enter/exit building gameplay, even if it does make the world feel smaller and more restricted..

Why do they have to reload the WHOLE fucking world every time you exit a tiny hut, anyway? And what's taking so long? Thought you'd run defrag while you were at it? Anyone calling the delightful combo of crashes & loading "minor flaws" have to be tinfoilhat-wearing loons.

Maybe there's a gem underneath all the crap, but I for one am not touching this bucket of turdspill again until the patch comes out. If the loading times have been significantly improved (and I do mean significantly) it might actually be worth playing. Until then, none of the game's other qualities could possibly make up for the agony (and the annoyingly poor voice-acting.. Just stick to the written word next time and reserve recorded dialogue for key sequences, thanks).

Until then: anyone interested in a copy of this astounding game? European and uncensored! Special price for you my friend...

Yea, I will admit the loading is annoying...but that is the only drawback that I really find that way because of the leaving/entering places have to trigger a load, and if it is an important story-moving area, you then have to deal with the auto-save adding time. At least that on my system, loading is ~10 seconds overall, so it's not a huge problem like in a few other games.

As for the crashing, yea, the 1.2 patch hopefully will fix it, but in the interim I found that to alleviate a lot of it is to remove the extra auto-saves and leaving at max two in there. Even in the Quarter I don't crash after applying that workaround, but with the fact there being lots of loading and eventual auto-saving in there, it becomes a tedious workaround.

Yeah the loading times remind me of Morrowind but I haven't crashed more than 2 or 3 times during the 20-odd hours I've been playing the game.

Nice maybe this will sell a few more games for them but I would have rather seen a patch to disable auto saves and fix loading times.

Usually my favorite part of any RPG is roaming around exploring thats what I missed most in witcher it almost seemed to closed in and of course the constant loading and auto saving dosent help it just breaks the feeling of immersion.

Now if CD projekt merged with Piranha Bytes and blended the large free roaming world of the Gothic series and the great story telling and adult theme from the Witcher that would be an RPG.

I have to say that I have put in 10 hours into the game so far. I have had 4 crashes. But the frequency and lenght of the loading time is the single greatest technical flaw.

Well, it's interesting. The problem is I'm now meant to use the Ard on some debris but I don't having a bloody clue how to do it... I select it, or press 1, and it doesn't do anything or let me select anything. I'm completely stumped. It's probably something stupidly simple but I can't figure it out.

Actually, that patch is due out before XMas according to the developer. Check the Witcher forum for more details.

Are you using XP or Vista? Either way, you might want to check the tech forum on the Witcher site. There are a lot of published FAQs that may improve or eliminate crashes completely. They have helped a number of people.

The main forums are here: http://www.thewitcher.com/forum/
