Free BCM Gold and Universal Combat Coming

A post on the 3000AD Discussion Board by Derek Smart announces that Battlecruiser Millennium Gold and the original Universal Combat will be released for free over the internet at some point soon, as the rights to both sci-fi games are about to lapse:
Dreamcatcher's five year rights to Battlecruiser Millennium Gold and the original Universal Combat expires on 12-18-07. I do not intend to renew those rights.

In keeping with my tradition, both games will be released for free on the Internet at some point in the near future.

say what you want about DS but this is pretty cool and something that more companies should do instead of listening to some spineless corporate lawyer who thinks you'll somehow jeopardize your IP if you give shit away. Theres so many great games no longer in retail yet locked away because of this mentality.

BTW, lawyers are about as useful as the scum off the lid of my cesspool cover.

Everybody says this until they need one. My brother spent half his time complaining about lawyers in this country and how tort reform was drastically needed, but then when he was hit by a drunk driver who's insurance company refused to pay his $50,000 in medical bills, he was kissing his lawyer's ass.

That being said, I agree that many more companies need to do this. There are so many awesome old school games that aren't being played for the reasons you mentioned.

A) Look up the origin, and I am paraphrasing "first thing we should do is kill all the lawyers". Hint, it was from Shakespeare and it was about the positive benefits of lawyers.

B) Why do you have a cesspool? If you have a cesspool, do you really need to concern yourself with a cover? I mean, is something going to fall in and clean it?

a.) Whats your point?

b.) I meant septic tank. my mistake.

malpractice/trial/copyright/entertainment attorneys should be lit on fire.

the rest are a neccessary evil.

They produce NOTHING of benefit to society yet take a disproportionate amount for their services. To me thats the definition of parasite. I could go into their affect on the medical profession, its costs, its affect on medical R&D and how its becoming increasingly stagnate because of fear of litigation. Their affect on what we see and hear entertainment-wise, their affect on small business and on and on....

Keep in mind that these rights are NOT the copyright. Only the exclusive contracted right of dreamcatcher to sell those games for 5 years. More authors should limit those kinda contracts to 5 years like he did so they can get back thier rights. So many games never have sequels made because the company holds the rights and doesn't do anything while the author has moved on and would like to do something more with the game, but can't.
Anyway, they are still going to be copyrighted, but at least now we can enjoy free games.
Free games are good regardless of who they come from.

Yeah, unfortunately we need lawyers to navigate the incredibly complex legal system created by... lawyers...

I'll give credit to Derek for this move. As has been pointed out, it's not as if every publisher and/or developer does this.

Say what you want but he and his small dev team are slowly but surely advancing this game to a level that puts it squarely at the top of deep space sims.

look at the screen shots for the new game coming in January

http://www.3000ad.com/site/screenshots_gcte/

When you consider how pubs like EA trash one dev after the next even if you think this guy is a jerk you have to respect the fact that he has stayed the course and makes one of the only fully featured true space sim left in existence.

Honestly I bet that at least 1/2 of you would like the last UC game released. And this new one pretty much puts to rest the remaining complaints about graphics. every ship has its own cockpit, the space stations look awesome, everything is to scale, you can still do trading, explore planets, destroy cities, mine for minerals and engage in massive space combat.

I hope this new game gets the credit it will probably deserves.

Even if you don't like Smart's games, I fail to see why you would bitch at him releasing his older games for free.

I wish every dev did that.

That's true. Now that even Bioware has sold out like a bunch of fucking whores, devs that stay independent and make the game THEY want to make are very rare indeed.

I admit those screenshots look pretty good. Somewhere between the level of X2 and X3. There is something really off about the galactic background shots though. I think it's the overabundance of thick fat stars that basically become giant blobs on the screen. A lot fewer of those would make it look much better. It's a background. It's not meant to draw attention. Some of the nebulae look smeared out too. Perhaps that's an artifact of the screenshot.

I might even try that game. Ofcourse, with Derek's reputation, if it doesn't work I'm shit out of luck.

Then again, that's not so different from most other games these days.

The problems with his games for me is learning them. The learning curve for his games is incredible.

I would love to play his games but after my 1 attempt at 3000AD (and returning it) I just gave up on it.
