Out of the Blue

A little discussion emerged in the forums last night about Outlaws, so I thought it was a good opportunity to repeat my opinion that LucasArt's western first-person shooter is way atop my personal list of favorite games that are in desperate need of remakes or sequels. That's certainly not going to inspire any action on this front, but making that statement somehow makes me feel better.

Speaking of feeling better, here's hoping that things clear up soon in the Midwest, where our pal nin and something like a million other folks are without power amid freezing temperatures following an ice storm. Things are apparently pretty rough out there, as I've seen several news reports echoing nin's description of the area as looking like a war zone.

Also, get well soon Alex Trebek.

And of you tards not played HL2 yet and want a copy? I still got an extra gift, to gift. Know anybody who has not and wants to? I have had the damn thing for months now.

I would. But, I have no functioning computer on which to play it. I figure you couldn't afford Bats' loan/mortgage, but maybe you could set aside a few pennies for a brand-spanking new system for my birthday/Christmas?

Car batteries do range from $40-$100 easy. The only difference is the warranty. If you paid $70 and did not get a 5 year warranty, your a tard.

AutoZone and the like usually gives you a 6 year warranty on a battery that expensive. I have gotten many (for various cars and various people) for $50 or less and a 4 year warranty...

I'd love a true sequel to Outlaws. I loved that game. It seems to have a large fan base, though oddly enough I never could get any of my friends into it.

WW2 games have been done to death, modern war type games have become so generic, when are we going to start seeing wild west type games.

I just picked up Call of Juarez the other day, I liked the demo, but I haven't gotten around to installing it yet.

Yeah, LA has really gone down from the early days when they were extremely creative with games like Outlaws. Makes now sense really why they haven't made another game, unless they have sold the rights, maybe?
Even if the whole original team has moved on, it's not like there aren't others capable of making a sequel or did they possibly run into legal problems with the obvious resemblances to the Good, Bad and Ugly series?
Very confusing.

people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.

Outlaws is one of my all-time favorite PC games as well, which is why I hope they just shitcan any idea about a sequel. We're too far removed from the original for a follow-up to be any good. Lucasarts has changed, design ideas have changed, and the developers responsible for the original have been scattered to the four winds.

We'd be more likely to get another Invisible War than a game worthy of the name Outlaws 2.

What was really fun was getting the 120 perscription for what they called a '5 pack' you take 5 pills, 1 each day.

Z-pack... and yeah, they kick ass.

Why LA never followed up with Outlaws 2 is still something that boggles my mind. Outlaws is still one of my fondest gaming memories. I still listen to the soundtrack regularly.

Well, EVGA processed my step-up request, the electronic upload of my newegg invoice, and the $7± payment for UPS ground shipment in less than 24 hours and I now have an RMA label to send the old card back.

I'm beginning to like these guys!

FYI, a review of the new 8800 GTS 512 card I'm getting (standard clock speed):

http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/12/12/geforce_8800_gts_512_mb/

There's actually little to know about the GeForce 8800 GTS 512 Mo. It takes back the G92 chip introduced with the renowned 8800 GT, but in a boosted version as it maintains the 128 stream processors of the 8800 GTX. It confirms, by the way, that the G92 isn't limited to the 112 stream processors activated on the 8800 GT. That's not all since clock wise we now see 650 MHz for the GPU and 1625 MHz for the shaders, which is another increase compared to the 8800 GT. Basically, the latter had made the GeForce 8800 GTS 320 MB and 640 MB obsolete and this new 8800 GTS 512 MB brings shame, at least on paper, to the 8800 GTX (17% less efficient) and the 8800 Ultra as well (7% less efficient)!

Of course, once again memory becomes the decider. On the one hand we have capacity; because the GTX is still equipped with 768 MB whereas the new 8800 GTS comes with only 512 MB, which is less than the 640 MB of the previous version. On the other hand we have the bandwidth. When the chip's clock reaches 970 MHz it allows it to be on par with the previous 8800 GTS despite the 256 bits bus limitation. The GTX also displays a "third lung" which gives it 39% more bandwidth. Let's see what this means practically.

Conclusion
Overall, the GeForce 8800 GTS 512 MB is interesting for a few reasons. Based on a largely more powerful G92 (24% ) than the one on the GeForce 8800 GT, it manages to outperform the GeForce 8800 GTX. The latter has sometimes got the upper hand (Age of Empires III, Crysis), but is more often than not beaten (Test Drive Unlimited, STALKER, Unreal Tournament 3, Call of Duty 4) or is on a par globally (Supreme Commander, Oblivion, World In Conflict). It all depends on the nature of each game and its demands in shading. Memory-wise, we remain at the same level as the GeForce 8800 GT; whether it is in capacity or in bandwidth (it only increases by 8% ).

Oh, and I'm going to go to Ruth's Chris for dinner Saturday. Got a couple gift cards with credit card rewards points so I am taking my wife, sister, and brother-in-law for some nice steaks.
