Serious EVE Online WinXP Issue

The EVE Online Forums report one of the editions of the new Trinity update for EVE Online is corrupting user's Windows XP installations. The patch offers three (a trinity) of variants, and those updating to the Premium client from the Classic client may end up with a corrupted "boot.ini." They say they are working on the issue, and in the meantime offer a description of the problem and possible workarounds:
Please do not reboot your computer without reading this information and determining if your system might be affected.

(Note that Windows Vista is not affected)

If you are only using the Classic client or installed the Premium client using the full Premium installer than you are not affected.

If you upgraded from the Classic client to the Premium client, using the content upgrade, then please read on.

Check the root directory of your hard drive and see if you have a boot.ini file, if so then you are not affected. The file is normally hidden so you need to click Tools : Folder Options : View and select "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" to be able to see it.

You can also check for the presence of this file by clicking Start : Control Panel : System : Advanced : Startup and Recovery : Settings (third button down). Windows will alert you if the boot.ini file is missing.

If there is no file then please read the following articles:

What the Fark? I mean good god does CCP think every one of their subscribers are advanced computer users? If I played this game I would probably at this point unsubscribe... Anytime I see [boot loader] my first thought is to run away.

I lost faith in CCP a long time ago. They have some great ideas, and a complete lack of technical skill to act on them.

FYI the test server patch is much different from this one from what I know at least on the premium content. Besides the fact being roughly 250megs smaller they did other things along with this file.

Those that meet ALL of the following criteria need to read the Update Fix Instructions and should NOT reboot their PC:
You started downloading the upgrade from Trinity Classic Graphics Content to Premium Graphics Content BEFORE 04:00 GMT on Dec 6
You must be using a version of Windows other than Vista.
You must have Windows installed not on the primary partition.
You must have at least 2 hard disks and the OS must be installed not on the primary, but the secondary hard disk

If all these apply, you MAY be affected by a known problem with the Graphics Update system.

There is no hope for anyone who still trusts CCP after their developer-guild collusion scandal.

I was thinking, between that issue and todays, "Who would trust their credit card with these people?"

Doesn't give you much faith in the company. Do they even QA anything? It's absolutely unforgiveable that something like this could happen.

Not as bad as Pool of Radiance, which would actually destroy your copy of Windows if you dared to try to uninstall it. Still, an impressive effort by CCP!

shouldn't be affected?????

Vista doesn't even have or need a boot.ini you n00b. Rather then playing trials of games maybe you should learn more about your computer instead.

The screen was taken on my wicked old machine, it's got issues of its own.

as for the fanbois coming out of the woodwork, no suprises there, I doubt people would be canceling their wow sub out of something like this entirely for no other reason.
Utter fuckup from the coders hands no matter how sleepdeprived and sierously some QA guy should be fed to unemployment.

but as I stated in the other thread, for these fanbois CCP dev fecees tastes like rocky road ice cream and is laced with amfetamines on top of smelling like roses.

just take the dev blog forum phenomonon, you get two pages of "first post" awesome blog !! etc etc and maybe on the third page someone comes along and starts asking, why this change, ?
have you realy thought of this this and that and actually attempts to start any dialog other than total ass kissing.

Glad I waited before loading the free trial of EVE. Although I'm running Vista and shouldnt be affected, I'll still wait til they get this sorted out.

Shit happens, but it is sad something like this happened when they were rolling out their new graphics engine.

Was gonna reactivate for a month just to go 'see the sites' but sorta afraid to install the game now heh.

I really don't love this MMO or hate it, but it's one of the MMO's I'd love to see still going in 10 years.

It sure helps when their communicating which a sizable part of the user base.;P

Just noticed the forums are allready full of the arrogant asshole fanboys that revolve their sad little lives around the game, naturaly defending ccp's position, placing the blame on the victims of the problem as per normal.

Thankfully i havn't even contemplated booting up the client, or installing the update yet.

The fact ccp and their unprofessional organisation allow those sad little people to hit out and blame the victims of their mistake says it all about their operation.

There is a post in one of the SiSi (test) forums. Someone did find it before the patch went live. But they only posted it in another thread and it was very casual at that, so they probably missed it.

If however your windows is installed on the first hardrive and on that hardrives first partition windows will boot from a default setting.

Hunh, that probably explains why this didn't come up on the test server. I probably got that message when I was running the game and so did the 100's of other people but since the computer booted just fine it never gave anyone a problem.

Anyone playing this game on a more complex machine, like at work...?, would likely find themselves in trouble!

I just ran the self installer. Game is on the C: drive:

Output folder: C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE
Delete file: \boot.ini
Extract: boot.ini... 100%

Oops. And yes, there's a boot.ini file in the EVE directory. They put a \ where they shouldn't have. Luckily I backed my boot.ini file up before this. Surprised it wasn't caught on the test server.
