OK, I can view the source for BB when I try to open it but the page doesn't load (via right-click -> view source. I get a file called www.bestbuy[1]).

I cannot open the source for weather.com - won't let me right click while that tab is open.

And, for the record, they don't work in FF either.

Sorry - I just hate downloading shit I don't need and won't use on my relatively slow "broadband" connection just to uninstall later.

Pisses me off.

The only reason some sites work in IE is the moronic web developers thought it would be awesome to use ActiveX instead of Java. Because, after all, Java works seamlessly in IE and FF, with the understanding you need to download the Java plug-in. But hey you go right ahead and enjoy that KOOL-AID laced with cyanide.

I know that. It doesn't stop the web sites from not working, does it?

Yeah, I'll just switch to a browser that doesn't work for me! That'll show them!

Dolt.

Yeah. I know. For the 20th time, I like the way IE works with tabs better and I've never had a problem with IE until now. There are also certain sites that will not work with FF (IE required). I also don't like the way FF handles downloads, etc.

Dude, seriously. As I said you do not have to continue to use Firefox, just test it in Firefox. It tells us a lot of it does not work in Firefox as well. You are asking for help but you will not even do the simplest thing to answer the question if it is IE or the system!

As to fix IE, if you check with Firefox to verify it is just IE; I would check to see if there was any update installed recently with the auto-update windows feature. If so, uninstall it and see if that fixes it.

It's not IE in general. Again, it's just something screwy with my machine at home. And that machine is only a couple months old.

I think it's IE. Seriously, try a different browser (of your choice) on the problem machine and see if the two sites open.

I asked him the other day if he'd tried those same sites in FF, and I don't think he ever fessed up to it...

edit: And BB and Weather both render fine in FF on my system.

And they both work fine on IE and FF at work (I have both installed and use both there). It's not IE in general. Again, it's just something screwy with my machine at home. And that machine is only a couple months old.

Back to the topic at hand, does anyone have any useful suggestions on this?

I really would at least try Firefox before you go messing around with the system files. You do not have to keep using it if you choose not too, it just is best to rule out all possibilities.

See, IE is a piece of shit, and should only be used when whatever site you need to access is so (equally) fucked that it ONLY renders under IE (like a few of my bill pay sites)...

FF. Opera. Hell I'd go back to Netscape before making IE my primary browser...

There's an IEfix. It's called Firefox.

I've been meaning to mention that if any of you were looking for a fun game to play try the Windows version of Jade Empire. It's basically like KOTOR.

1. Best Buy and Weather.com will not load Nov 29, 2007, 01:27 Warhawk

OK, so I still cannot load these two websites for whatever reason.

They are not in my banned websites list (the list is empty) in IE.
I can load rewardzone.bestbuy.com but not bestbuy.com.
I tried clearing the browser cache and cookies, etc.
The hosts file is empty except for the localhost.
I tried Start -> Run -> ipconfig /flushdns.
I cannot view the webpage source, either.

In looking around I find recommendations for using something called IEfix, for reinstalling IE again from the ie.inf that is in drive:\windows\inf folder, install BHODemon, try a Winsock XP fix, trying Start > Run > sfc /scannow, etc.

Before I trudge on any further, any recommendations?

Thanks!
