Star Trek Online Going Casual?

Shacknews reports that Perpetual Entertainment has been acquired by newly formed Perpetual LLC. This is said to likely be a way of dealing with the company's credit situation, as the report was spurred by information in an SEC filing by Ragnarok Online creator Gravity Co., Ltd where the Korean firm says it thinks its $9 million investment in Perpetual is lost. In an interesting twist, a later update to this story with information from an anonymous source suggests that the new owner of Perpetual envisions a more casual business model for Star Trek Online, which suggests the MMOG may follow the free-to-play route that includes optional cash transactions.

Once they said there was going to be no player ship interiors, this POS was dead anyways.

Yep.

I used to be a huge trek fan, but then Next Generation was over and the shit started piling in. Really, Trek hasn't been good since the 80's. I don't think it'll ever make a serious come back.

Hell, I do. Trek needed a serious reboot, and it's finally getting one.

I wasn't terribly impressed with Enterprise.

At least, not initially.

That's cancelled, now, of course...

I find this sad really. I had stopped looking forward to this game when they mentioned that you or your guild wouldn't be able to fly around in the Galaxy and Sovereign class ships, which was a huge feature they were pushing. I know there were tons of "crews" set up for this game years ago.

It's a pity you can't have that child-like excitement about games anymore, especially MMOs. Hell even SWG delivered on more of their promises than STO will. Now pay to play? Seriously...wtf? Paramount, revoke their license and give it to a more capable dev team, like Mythic, who have been doing some wonderful things with the Warhammer license after that other company blundered it up.

Further...

Free2Play (I.E. Pay out your nose for items) completely goes against everything Star Trek stood for. I dont recall Scotty ever asking for money to fix the warp core, or Worf wanting hand outs for reloading the torpedo compliment. If it really is going this direction, I hope the game is just axed entirely. This model has always disgusted me but has always been limited to absolutely horrific and terrible Korean MMOs (click to move, anyone?) but to see it pop up in a western MMO just sucks...

Yes, but it will be a prequel; I don't have very high hopes for it.

A new movie is out next year

Yes, but it will be a prequel; I don't have very high hopes for it.

Just open the damn universe to the fans and let them have at it, to make new stories as they want them to be told, whether it be in games, books, television, whatever.

Reboot with a new crew, set it a few centuries past Voyeur.. um, Voyager, make it grittier. Federation corrupts, factions splinter off and spread out across the quadrants, as they try to find and control dwindling resources and make new discoveries (alien races/artifacts/entities/star systems/etc) along the way...

Probably easier said than done, though.

EDIT: Then again, that would somewhat take on the atmosphere of the revamped (and now ending?) Battlestar Galatica...

Um Praxus, did you see any of the interior screen shots they had and the comparisons to the actual set shots?

Or are you just angry cause you were blown up in the first few mins of 'The Undiscovered Country'?

Why would they would even let a company that has no proven track record releasing any game, much less a mmo, have the rights to one of the most profitable sci fi franchises is beyond me.

ME! I can code. It will be l33t.

Seriously, if paramount just made the star trek brand free for use, there would be a ton of new games and projects out there which would enhance, not dilute their branding. They are nuts.
I'd do a DS9 space strategy game immediately.

Cash transactions?

Maybe they should make Ferengi the only playable race.
