Marvel Universe Online in Trouble?

Is Marvel Universe Online Dead? on 1UP is a speculative report following up on reports that a major title is on the verge of cancellation (story), identifying Marvel Universe Online as the title that's hit the rocks. According to the story, Cryptic's upcoming superhero MMORPG has not been cancelled outright, but 1Up says it has been "told" development of the game is in trouble, though the source of this information is not clear. The majority of the article bolsters the case that MUO is in trouble by noting a number of recent instances where questions about the state of the game were ducked to some degree during interviews.

CoX was not a super hero/villain game but the EQ ripoff with abstract gear and a modern day/pulp tecture set.

They did great things with character creation but everything else was standard MMO stuff but less good.

Depth equates to the quests themselves and the environments they're set in. CoX is one of the worst for depth in that regard, period.

CoX also has a lot more depth then it used to. 99% of that depth is in the form of character advancement systems. But the game has come a long way in that dept since release.

And yea, the lack of stamina just about every class experiences, thus requiring you take a specific power pool, is a design mistake. The devs have all but admitted that, but a fix is far from an easy one.

I guess it just comes down to individual opinion. I think the game is great, others think it sucks. It's my 15 year old nephews favorite game, but he has friends that are WoW fanatics and hate it.

For example, someone below said WoW had depth. LMAO I think 'wtf are you smoking? Have you played any other MMOGs? WoW has the depth of a teaspoon compared to the likes of Eve, or Anarchy Online.' But alas.. that's just my opinion.

YEp, Florida nailed it. I go back about every 6 months to try it again, and it still ends up bleh after 2 weerks or so. They've had years to change this stuff for the better and still haven't, so...

It'l be too bad if it doesn't go. I was hoping they could fix all the stuff they did wrong with CoX. If they did that, they'd have tanked CoX in the process though. So damned if they do, damned if they don't.

And Marvel has mighty deep pockets, so I'm sure the cost had nothing to do with it. Cryptic just couldn't deliver on the gameplay itself.

It has nothing to do with fanboi'ism at all it has to do with the major endurance power Stamina is pretty much a requirment in the game.

But for the content that IS in the game, it's pretty weak until 20+. If they gave out all the good shit at level 1 why would you even play till 50?

Also Tankers are very hard to solo unless your a damage dealing tanker. Hell with my 44 or 45 Invun/Super Strength Tanker I only have roughly 4 or 5 attacks but I'm also a major meat shield. Compaired to my Energy/Energy Blaster (at 50) All he has are attacks (and 4 buffs).

Actually I was agreeing with you in a way Cabezone. I'm not a COH/COV fanboy. I just played the game off and on for a while.

I was just saying it would be easy for someone that doesn't know any better to assume that Tankers are always waiting around for endurance to regen.

With the complete vacuum of information since this was announced a few years back, I'm not sure there's a lot of people who really believed it'd ever see the light of day anyway. All of this started more than five years ago now and there isn't so much as a screenshot (as far as I know) to show what work has really been done.

It's worth it to slot at least one endurance reduction per power, even/especially at the expense of damage. I do this and I never have endurance problems at any level. Big damage is nice until you have no endurance to deliver it.
Huh? I'm sorry, I was thinking about cake.

When you fanboys say "just a bit"...you mean I have to play the game past past level 20 before it gets good or fast paced? Games shouldn't suck the first 20 levels before getting "good"

Please, I have no problem with you guys liking the game but don't try and make it something it isn't. It has the same old slow paced combat MMORPG but with added downtime from endurance.

He probably gave up before he got to the power pool stuff. It would be really easy for a noob to try and start up a Tanker, level him up just a bit, and say "Wow, this blows!" before they turn the corner.

Florida pretty much nailed it.

As for a Tanker running out of Endurance, how the hell is your character slotted and what crappy pool powers did you take?

CoH/CoV just didn't have enough depth to it at all.. not even close to what I'd want.
Let's say for example WoW has a depth rating 8/10 ... CoH had a 2/10.. if that.

It was a great little game, but once you got to the end, that was it. nothing else. All the instances looked the same.. what did they have, like 4 different settings? That sucked.

Fastest of any MMORGP isn't saying very much. Tanks still have to spend half the time sitting on their ass resting waiting for endurance to build back up...which is shit design. The combat in MMORPG's in the worst part about them. At the very least combat needs to involve the player more and have zero to very little downtime.

CoX is a fantastic game. You just can't play it 12 hours a day like WoW. It's best in spurts, 2 hours here, 1 there, every few days. It's a casual MMOG.

As to MUO.. Statesman has lost his touch. I guess that means it's a good thing that NCSoft fully owns CoX now. So MUO's failure doesn't pull CoX with it. But if any of the CoX guys are making MUO, I'd say it's got talent behind it and should be ok.

This could of course just be Marvel having shaky knees, they've never made an MMOG before, let alone probably realized the type of investments that are involved.

I had no problem with the combat (think it's the fastest combat in any MMO out there) my problem is with the same fucking content over and over.

Well I was kinda hoping they'd evolve the game a bit past CoH. Keep all the great customization and make the combat more action orientated, or at least a whole lot faster.

Well I can't say I'm surprised. COH/COV isn't a bad game but once you get past the initial WOW factor it's boring as hell.

But I do have to say I was looking forward to Web-Slinging around the Fantastic Four's building, and visiting Xaviers school
