StarCraft 2 Nears?

A post to the World of Warcraft Forums by Blizzard's Rob "EnoYls" Pardo offers an indication that StarCraft 2 might be further along in development than previously suspected (thanks Blizzplanet):
Yes, I'm pretty active during betas on the forums. During Starcraft, War3 and WOW I was pretty active gathering feedback, informing people about changes and explaining new features and philsophy. I don't post on the WOW forums much anymore because Tigole and Kalgan are now the lead designers on WOW. While I'm involved with all the games here at Blizzard, I'm focus the most on the games closest to release like Starcraft 2.

I'm looking forward to SC2. Not because I think Blizzard is creating the next great RTS (DoW2 or CoH2 will probably be that) but purely because I like the setting and enjoyed the first one.

sc2 reminds me alot of halo 3..

the gameplay hasn't really changed, but the features surrounding it has...

the persistent upgrading and the ability to choose the order of levels you play as well as the ship you amble around and the crew you interact with seems to be the main upgrade...

sadly despite all it doesn't do, it still looks to be an awesome game.

Ummm Doom 3 wasn't Doom 2. I certainly recall fighting more than 3 monsters at a time in Doom 2.

I'm guessing he means the "monster closet" bullshit that was in Doom 3...

Pick up item, lights go out, spin 180, shoot baddie behind you, etc...

I loved SC, and always wanted more. It has a great setting, great storyline, and great characters (Well, the few ones that are left alone. Most of them got killed in Blood War.)

More SC story = good.

On the other hand, it looks like this is really EXACTLY the same fucking game. Based on several previews I've read, dropping 2 reavers into a base is still a highly succesful tactic, Zergling rushes still rule, there just isn't anything new.

A few units here and there (the Protoss now have some extra dragoons, wooptidoo) and that's it?

After all the fantastic innovation we've seen in RTS games over the past three or so years (SupCom's control scheme, Dawn of War's unit system, Company of Heroes' completely destructable levels and I'm probably forgetting stuff), Blizzard is just going to back to the mid 90s, and give us braindead units that won't do ANYTHING on their own, barracks that produce a single marine, and late game units that completely own the shit out of early game units?

It's funny, when id did the same thing with Doom 3, EVERYONE skewered them for it. "WHERE'S THE INNOVATION??!!"

Now Blizzard is doing it with SC2, and everyone is like "Yay, exactly the same game!!"
The 95-98% reviews are already written and ready to go.

Curious.

I'll still get this, if only for the story. But it'll be very disappointing if nothing is new.

Meh. I enjoyed SC 1. However, it didn't change my life, and I think the ten year hiatus and the hype are bigger factors in people's eagerness for this title than anything else.

I'll probably buy the game for the cinematic scenes, but I'm not thinking the actual play will be spectacular. Good yes, but by the end of the game, I'll be playing only to reach the next cinematic. If the game itself isn't candy...

Blizzard makes very competent, well balanced games. However I think they could defineatly use some innovation.

LoL, this isn't saying a lot at all. Considering Blizzard doesn't have anything else Announced aside from Starcraft 2 and persay a new WoW Expansion. Saying Starcraft 2 is what he's most focused on is because that's all that's in development right now. Nothing to burst a bubble over. I'm saying Starcraft 2 comes out next summer. Oh and it will decimate all RTS games.

This game is going to be a boring build-fest. More strategy games should take a note from Soldiers: Heroes of World War 2.

He just says "games closest to release", meaning Bliz has other things in the hopper - obviously - and SC2 is simply further along than their other stuff, which we could guess would be Diablo 3 and WoW 2.

Well, it is a pretty flat statement. We have nothing to relate it to and, unless some miracle happens (IE release in under three months,) the "previously suspected" date "Enoyls" refers to only shows just how out of touch he is.

Which is all ironic given the point of the thread is how "Enoyls" is not in touch with the community. In an abstract way, that ties into my own complaints about Blizzard's overall lack of customer service. I would copy and paste a link to the Warcraft "weekly" post, but it has now disappeared (likely due to being deleted from old age.) If my memory serves me correct, the last change to this "weekly" post was on 10-07-07.

Edit: Google cache FTW! Clearly, the post was deleted, but you can see, as of November fourth, the "weekly" post had not been changed since 10-09-07:
http://tinyurl.com/yongm3 Again, I don't mean to come off as just bashing Blizzard, but bashing the customer service. If you want information about Blizzard, you're better off visiting other sites rather than hoping/expecting it from Blizzard. And the Warcraft (if not all Blizzard?) forums are a nightmare for those that are new to the game(s) or truly seeking help. And I do think a big part of that is the "role" played by the GMs/"Blues."

Decent company, good game(s,) but terrible customer service.
Blizzard has, in fact, ignored many things.
Wishing somebody at Blizzard cared and would revamp the CS program,
Ray

Seriously? ... Plot? StarCraft is great because of its story?

Sure, the reason so many people are still playing it today is the multiplayer aspect.

But I kind of liked the story in StarCraft. The backstory was interesting, and I actually liked the characters. It's better than some of the other attempts at "plot" in today's games.

This coming from a hardcore CoD4 fan?

I could give you a list of innovation in CoD4...

And frankly that innovation and polish of the genre is the reason I'm enjoying it so much. I played the first CoD for maybe a few months but I've not so much as touched CoD2 or 3 because they were so ho-hum. So now I'll be off to it again.

This comment from Pardo is either saying something very good about Starcraft 2, or something very bad about the other Blizzard games in development (ie WotLK).

Bioshock, Crysis, Quake Wars, HL2:Episode 2/Portal/TF2, Gears of War PC, Unreal Tournament 3... it's going to be a good Q4. :-)

There's a whole lot of bitching about how this does or doesn't say anything about the release time.
How about what it DOES point out is that someone high up is in the forums, talking to the fanbase, and giving a quick "Hey, we havn't ignored you" message.
Would you rather have no comments from the team at all?

If Blizzard were to innovate the game, you same pieces of shite would come on here and complain that the game is too different and why don't they make a game that is the same as the original but with better graphics.

How do you know that?

You can hardly say that Starcraft has been milked to the degree that the Age of Empires ip has. It's been almost 10 years since the release of Starcraft. Jeez, let them release a more up to date version. There are plenty of other RTS games out there that attempt to innovate.

Just shut your trap and don't play the game if you don't like it. But spare us your incessant whining and regurgitated complaints.

To be fair I was an Age of Empires person. What was wrong with Age of Empires III? It was just Age of Empires 2 in 3D. I knew that then, and AoE3 failed pretty much across the board because everybody else knew it too. Coming from one of the founding franchises of the RTS genre didn't save it.

"I fail to see how this is "great news" for RTS fans. Instead of something truly envelope-pushing like Homeworld or Dawn of War or Ground Control II or Total War you're getting a game ten years old. I don't understand it. If you want to play StarCraft, what's stopping you from doing it now? You don't want your friends laughing at you because of the 'gay graphics?'"
