Hellgate Patch Coming, Beta Grace Period Ending

The Hellgate: London Website has word that a new single-player patch for Flagship's action/RPG is due around noon eastern time today, though due to a throttled delivery scheme it may not show up right away for all users. It is specified that this is not the promised single-player Guy Fawkes patch, as this is to address a couple of specific bugs. There's also a reminder that there's less than a week remaining in the grace period for beta testers to register a retail account to continue to participate.

What exactly is your point Dagok

Are you to stupid to figure that out on your own, based on last dozen or so threads about Hellgate? Not to mention the list of 4 items I requested be changed?

I knew you were stupid...but c'mon.

g mann - Shacknews is news for people with low IQ's

Looks like you better head on over there.

Bob,
A new demo is a great idea. I'm going to pitch one to the team tomorrow. Maybe we can use it to advertise our first substantial ongoing content update?

Eep! Not saying the hate here is incomprehensible or irrational. Just saying it takes a lot to bother me.

No worries, Prez. My first job in the gaming industry was as an editor at IGN. I was there for a few years, too. Now I have skin like ceramite.

You've not seen totally irrational and absolutely incomprehensible hatred until you've worked at that place and pissed off its readership. Me? Oh... I did many things to incur their wrath. Once I even made the near fatal mistake of laughing at the silly alligator hat Solid Snake wears in Snake Eater.

"It's a crocodile, you stupid son of a bitch! I will stab your idiot face to death! Metal Gear is better than life!

Signed,
Die! Sony Forever!"

I used to play off it, actually. I once ran a mailbag joke that spanned months. Every workday I very, very seriously explained to the good readers of IGN that Fellowship of the Ring was an inferior and obvious rip-off of Marlon Wayans' superb Dungeons & Dragons film since – also most obviously – D&D the movie came out long before Fellowship of the Ring ever did. And the letters kept rolling in.

It was so awesome.

I got hundreds of choice irate hate mail – illegible and delicious.

The joke went on for literally three months until my boss Steve – probably the best guy on Earth – took me aside and said something like, "Dude, this shit is hilarious. But these people sending in letters are getting scary-crazy."

I can't do that kind of joking anymore, but the whole experience did prepare me well.

Ivan consider this a request...

1) Give an option to opt out of in-game Advertising and just use static placeholder images.

2) Change the EULA and give the users an option to never have their system scanned for any information.

3) No subscription fees. Events free. Sell "modules" and expansions for reasonable fees when they are ready for release.

4)If a user leaves the game, for any period of time, they do not lose access to any content they previously had access to.

If all of the above can be changed, I'll go out and buy Hellgate, without even having tried the demo. Why? To prove a point.

AcidDrone, you bring up a good point. With the anticipated patches that will be released, I wonder if there will there be a Spring 2008 demo or something like that? The demo that came out a few weeks ago was underwhelming, but who knows, maybe a freshly patched one in a few months might be just the ticket?

i gotta say if all you've played is the demo, take a look at this.

I thought the demo was a piece of shit, but the latest update and the full game seems to have increased performance a hell of alot and it even looks better imo.

Its like diablo in a sort of doom 3 engine(with more lighting)

In saying that though I don't think i'd pay to play it, i just wanted to try singleplayer finish and go back to wow(lol)

Completely understandable. You're describing a form of micro-transactions – content users own and can access immediately, as opposed to content users subscribe to via a service option. By nature, micro-transactions of the sort also grant users an opportunity to decide what content they would like to own. A la carte gaming.

Unfortunately, that's not in our current business model. We do intend to release expansions – which I like to think of as snail mail transactions – but they won't come as frequently as any given Xbox Live! downloadable pack.

However, we're always open to change. If people request something enough times, we'll certainly consider it.

Ivan,

I loved the concept of HG:L, and was looking forward to it majorly. In my case though, I'm not interested in the subscription model.

I'll still buy the retail box (when patched up properly), and will play the rest of the game (single player, free multi), but I'd much rather see (and perhaps be willing to buy) 'content packs' released for a one time fee, rather than a monthly payment model. Bacially I want to 'buy' the content and be able to play offline, not just 'rent' the content online.

Just my thoughts.

You call losing your benefits for the month you have already paid for when you cancel a subscription a nitpick? Sounds like an illegal business practice. You could probably get your credit card company to bounce the charges back for not get getting what you paid for.

When are you supposed to cancel your sub? The day before you get charged for the next month?

Anyone who subscribes to hellgate should use a virtual CC # active for a single transaction if they can. Then you don't need to worry about canceling and the bastards will get rejected the next time they try to double charge or renew your sub. You can always use another virtual CC # in a month.

nin,
Just trying to explain to Bone that you don't need to subscribe to play. His post implied that after the grace period concluded people would have to pay the sub fee.

That's all I said, man. "Thems ain't fightin' words."

Well nitpicking it might be since I dont even have a subscription to hellgate london, but if its true that you loose your subscription rights even if you pay for a month of play thats wrong in my book.

Auch I just read that on the hellgate forums about a guy who claims that when you cancel your subscription in hellgate london you loose all subscription benifits IMEDIATLY instead of the normal practice of letting your subscription run out the month(s) you have allready paid for. Thats like paying the rent for a flat for a month, then telling your landlord you wish to move out next month and him comming on your doorstep and asking you to get the hell out of there the same day. (even if you paid the rent for that month.)
