Activision and Infinity Ward declare modern warfare, as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is now available for PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 (as well as Nintendo DS, but this probably isn't a direct port). For a sample of what to expect from the new direction for the series, which formerly focused on World War II, a playable demo was released last month (story). Here's the announcement: :

I just finished it. It took me ~ 7.5 hours, give or take 30 mins or so.

While that's not wonderfully long, I really do feel it's because of how easy it is to get through a level, since if you die, you just respawn like 10 seconds back. Content wise, the game is pretty large, you're running through a LOT of real estate (though it's ofcourse railroaded.)

Had a lot of fun with it, though Act 3 could have been a bit longer. Needed an extra mission or two.

Never played the original CODs besides the single player demo of the first one. Got tired of the WWII genre after the 54,231st game about it.

I'm not gonna lie... this game is fun. REALLY fun. The AC-130 mission was amazing, and the storyline is well played out through the game. Every mission of this game is solid. Lots of action. The graphics are great in some areas but so-so in others (the ocean in the first mission made me cringe). That being said, the game runs fabulous. Haven't tried the multiplayer yet, but I hope it's tactical and not bunny-hopping spray-and-pray.

I don't know if the ally AI just has poor aiming, but I'm guessing they just lowered the damage of their bullets compared to yours so you do have to kill things. Otherwise you could just hide behind a corner and let the game play itself for you.

Also, if you're hiding around a corner, then only your allies are being attacked.. which gives you no reason to move at all because you know you're 100% safe.

That would be boring if all it took to play through the game is hide behind a corner at every stop.

For a shoot on rails, this is a pretty fun game. I'm VERY picky about first person shooters, too.

a completely linear 5 hour game with no replayability DOES NOT DESERVE A FUCKING 9.0

That's right, it deserves a 9.6, like Half Life 2 episodes

Personally I can see myself replaying it, but yes, it is short. I finished act 1 in about 3 hours, and act 2 and 3 are shorter than act 1.

To be honest, it really isn't even that there is not enough content, because there is. Those levels are huge, and there's about 18 or so of them. That's pretty good.

It's the fact that dying has absolutely no effect in this game. You die, you respawn like 10 seconds ago. There's no real need to be cautious or anything, since you never have to reload or restart a whole level. That makes you absolutely FLY through the content.

Btw, the game got a 9.0 mostly because it also has a seriously kickass multiplayer. Unfortunately my pings are shit, otherwise I'd definitely play a lot of this.

If you wonder about AI in CoD4, you will be dissapointed:

It's not the smartest AI in the world, but I think it does the job fairly well.

Friendly AI:
-Takes 10-15 seconds to respond.
-Aims like Stevie fucking Wonder with a blindfold.
-Barks orders at me all the time yet accomplishes nothing by itself.
-Consistently runs in front of my line of fire and into friendly grenades.

I'm glad their aim is crap, otherwise my squad mates would play the game for me. The incessant order barking I haven't really noticed, probably because there's so much shooting going on that I can't hear anything anyways. I did have one point where the SAS guy kept bitching at me to come help him snipe some Russian sods, and I couldn't find where the fuck he was hiding.

In most other instances, what he's saying makes sense anyways, and I was already doing it.

Occasionally the AI will run in front of me, but it's not that often. One time I had a perfect vantage point from which I was laying the smack down on enemies, and private fucking cunthole decided that he was better suited to own that vantage point, and he stepped in front of me. A grenade at his feet made him see the error of his ways

Enemy AI:
-Throw nades with pinpoint precision
-Unlimited supply of nades
-Unlimited spawning at many points in the game..gee..that must be nice
-Is able to pull the trigger .0000001 seconds after you step into view. No human has this kind of reaction time.
-Is able to recover .0000001 seconds after being hit and aim with perfect accuracy.

I agree about the grenades thing, which is really annoying. Especially since the only way you even KNOW there is a grenade is because of the stupid console icon that pops up in your screen. You're supposed to be able to listen to the "clink clink" noise of the grenades. Sure. Over the sound of 30 assault rifles being fired?

The unlimited spawning is, in my opinion, just at a few points, and it forces YOU to flank the enemy and drive them from their entrenched positions. I kinda like that.

I don't agree with the last two sentiments. I have no problem taking down guys that foolishly run down the street without cover, why should the AI have any problems with that? If you're dumb enough to run down an open street without cover, you're going to get mowed down. Especially since there's probably at least a dozen guys shooting at you. And the recovery thing? You mean after he's hit? It takes the AI several seconds in my game to recover after he's hit. Several seconds which he usually never gets, I might add. I don't see that instant return fire you're talking about? Maybe on a higher diff level or so.

What about SP game length? I heard it was shockingly short.

the demo was a snooze fest.

i always joked that it was just COD2 with a new paintjob but i didnt know thats what it actually is.

i couldnt even stand still for i would honestly say 2 seconds without hearing 'jackson, do this' (yes i know someone said it earlier, but im driving the point home).

and i also lost count of the sound effects they re-used for this from COD2, especially the dying sounds.

*sigh* i hope mass effect is good.

If you wonder about AI in CoD4, you will be dissapointed:

This is an exact copy of COD 2 with some different skins and theme, that's all...absolutely nothing has changed.

Friendly AI:
-Takes 10-15 seconds to respond.
-Aims like Stevie fucking Wonder with a blindfold.
-Barks orders at me all the time yet accomplishes nothing by itself.
-Consistently runs in front of my line of fire and into friendly grenades.

Its obvious they haven't fired the sad bloke that's responsible for their A.I. He's lazy, preferring to take the spam and ungodly reflexes route out.
Here's an idea for him on the off chance he reads this board - get off your butt and give the Artificial Intelligence some actual INTELLIGENCE instead of more fricken steroids than Arnold.

And Zeph, you fucking hate COD games, we understand already, and if your single I know this guy who likes to bitch more then you do, and if ya get really bored you 2 can start swinging your purses at each other.

I've never played any of the previous CoDs, simply because WWII bores the shit out me.

This is just a stunning shooter. Yes, it's scripted out the wazoo, and you're really stuck on a rail, pretty much. You can dive into the occasional building and try and find a better vantage point (which can be incredibly beneficial), but you're still limited to basically one path to follow.

Having said that, the firefights are brutally intense, the levels are HUGE (not quite Farcry huge, but they get pretty close) and very interesting to fight in, and it definitely feels right.

This is what you'd expect a real firefight between two armed groups would feel like. None of this slow moving about, taking out a guy, retreating to heal up and then going forward again. Your squad advances to the next choke point, and if you don't help them out, they're not going to get any further.

Graphics and sounds are off the charts. That nuke that goes off is awesome. I've got it running at 1400x1050 at medium to high details, and it runs smooth as silk, though I get some stuttering in the mission briefings. Probably because I only have a gig of RAM.

There's a few minor niggles in the game.

1) It's really fucking hard to tell who the good guys are, and who the bad guys are. Often I'll run past a guy thinking he's a squad mate, and then get swiss-cheesed by him, since he's obviously an insurgent. Other times I'll be unloading half a clip into some poor schlep, and it turns out to be pvt anderson or something.

It's also a bit finnicky whether or not friendly fire stops the mission. Sometimes it does, and sometimes it doesn't.
I think the game simply spawns new squad members for you if some of them go down, and others seem to be completely invulnerable to any harm (like some of the SAS guys.)

2) In the first few missions, your squad does far more than you do. That kind of dragged me down a bit, but fortunately in the later missions, a lot of your squad's success depends on you. If you simply stay put and snipe at insurgents, they seem to be limitless. You need to actually advance and flank them (which works perfectly in this game, btw) for the insurgents to retreat, allowing your squad to move on.

3) While the feel of being in a squad is great, and the combat is definitely the fastest paced I've ever played, it does give me this feeling that I'm missing 80% of all the action that's going on. I guess that'll make for more replayability, but sometimes I'm tempted to just run out there so I can see what my squad members are doing.

4) Though the game itself isn't easy (you die PLENTY of times), the crazy health and save scheme make every mission way too easy. Got 12 rounds in your gut from a G3? Just sit for five seconds, and you're back in the action.
Died from a grenade? Poof, you're 5 seconds back at the last checkpoint.
I would assume that this definitely leads to the short duration of the campaign. It's not that there isn't a lot of content (because there is), it's just that you never really have any real difficulty getting through it.

Having said all that, for a scripted shooter, there is nothing out there better than this. It's obviously not Crysis and it's free form gameplay, but if you want to play an excellent shooter on rails, this will happily tide you over.

Well, there are three different groups you play as. I've only played as two so far, so I'm assuming the third is also one of the good guys. Anyway, Jackson is in the US Marines sections, and Soap (yes, that's his name) is in the British SAS. So while you play the English guy, the voices are different. Also, you don't just play like one campaign and then go on to the next like how Starcraft was. It switches back and forth between the different people you play to show how their stories are intertwined.

In response to #25 / Zephalaphelah:

It would be okay if they had some sort of radar to show you where you need to go because sometimes I'm like "WTF, where in the hell are you voice? ... oh you're on the staircase, well thanks for telling me, it's not like I can discern your location from this non-directional voice."

The compass at the bottom of the screen will usually have a yellow circle that indicates the direction you should be heading. I was in the same boat as you until I realized this.

Anyway, I VERY RARELY buy single player computer games. It just doesn't make sense to me. However, I thought the demo of COD4 was pretty cool, so I actually decided to buy this. I'd seen/played the COD demo that was on 360 when it first came out and thought it was pretty neat, but I've never really been interested in the series. I'm more a Quake 3 and TF2 person.

I haven't really tried the multiplayer part of this game yet, but I have been playing through single player and it's actually pretty cool. The graphics and atmosphere are really awesome, and there's always a sense of emergency going on.

While I do think it's a bit much to pay for a "single" player game, I am having fun with it, and I don't regret the purchase.

Can't wait for Crysis for and Assassin's Creed!!

Thanks man! I will check out the Crymod site and try to find it. I been lurking there for a few days now just trying to follow the coop process.

One last question, what gamemode were you playing with those AI guys on that MP level?

Thanks again! Just about 1 week until Crysis. Nice to see new SP maps being released already.
