Ships Ahoy - The Witcher

2007: The Year of 'The Witcher is the press release announcing The Witcher is now available in North American stores. Also, in addition to this morning's release of the game on Gamer's Gate, the game is also available for online purchase and download directly from Atari. Here's word on the game's availability:
NEW YORK, Oct. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Atari, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATAR - News), one of the world's most recognized brands and a third-party video game publisher announced today the North American launch of The Witcher®, the first game from Polish development studio CD Projekt RED and a distinctive PC role-playing game which delivers a thrilling story in a unique fantasy universe alongside stunning tactical combat. The Witcher is a Games for Windows title, rated M for Mature and available at the suggested retail price of $49.95.

In The Witcher players take the role of Geralt of Rivia, a professional monster slayer, who exists on the fringes of a complex society troubled by the kind of problems more commonly found on the front pages of newspapers than in a fantasy universe. Taken as a child, mutated, and trained in the arcane ways of the witchers, Geralt is a reluctant hero, who nonetheless finds himself all too frequently in the heat of battles that are not his own. His is a path he might not choose to walk, but walk it he must, guided by his head, heart, and only faithful companion - his sword.

"The Witcher is an unbelievably robust and exciting role-playing game that offers an intense world, unbelievable graphics, and an incredible story-line," said Lawrence Liberty, Producer, Atari, Inc. "Atari is eager to deliver with CD Projekt RED this outstanding game that strives to set new standards within the genre."

Based on the fictional world created by best-selling Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher is set in a unique fantasy universe where real-life issues dominate a troubled society. In this world there is no right or wrong, only decisions and consequences - consequences with which the protagonist Geralt must live.

...did you just compare The Witcher to a hentai game?

Yes after you say the right things to a female you have'a'da sexy time. Afterwards you collect a little portrait/tarot card of the female in the nude. From then on in the character section of the journal, there is a small heart on bottom left of the portrait, click it and you can view the card again.

This is actually pretty fun. Parts of it reminds me of H-games but there's nothing really wrong with that. Between this and the new version of Dwarf Fortress I have no time =(

It's amazing what they did with the old Aurora engine

I believe Crushbug said they dumped the render and wrote their own/got another...

I'm liking the game so far. It seems like an odd mix of NWN2, Gothic 2 and a bit of Fable tossed in. It's amazing what they did with the old Aurora engine, although there's still some bugs and technical issues to iron out.

But hey, at least it isn't as big a mess as Gothic 3.

Haven't played WoW since beta but I reckon it's a might bit more complicated than you imply.

So now we have a detractor saying it's boring because of the combat and another one saying, the total opposite, that the story is boring.

I like them both. I wish polished hack-and-slash RPGs like this came out more often. Titan Quest was great but it was like Diablo as far as story and adventuring is concerned... Now take that and give it a great story, game affecting desicions [multiple stories and endings], and add great atmosphere and good graphics.

I agree on the point where you think the game is boring. I do not, however, agree that the combat is shit, because it's freckin' great!

I have an answer for this seeming paradox: The story is SHIT boring and SLOW.. but the action is great. Easy.

I thought Hollywood had hit rock buttom. Then this happened.

Why couldn't they have implemented a directional combat system with hit zones etc would not have been hard.

Because there's only you, and even if they implement what you said you would complain about something else.

It also helps to raise the difficutly level from easy to medium.

I dont like the camera they default to you, you can barely see anything and its like your staring at the ground the entire game. They give you some options though, I use the OTS camera, which uses the keyboard and mouse to move around like a normal FPS game and you have to bring up the cursor by holding shift to access the rpg buttons on screen. Works a lot better then their default setup.

Loving this game... Great atmosphere and gorgeous graphics. Also I appreciate the very detailed and fleshed out story [coming from the book I suppose] as a fan of adventure[esque] games.

The main complaints have already been mentioned. Long load times [really not too long but annoyingly often]. Terrible camera work but I can stomach it with the isometric view and forcing myself to click-to-move foregoing the usual WASD. The dialogue and voice acting are surprisingly not bad but as mentioned there are language translation hiccups every now and then... But hey the game world is a foreign land too, weird ways of speaking add falvour.

If you like story, graphics, alchemy, and click-click-click combat this game will be great for you and its awesome atmosphere makes it one to buy.

I keep on praising this game, I can't help it. And yes, the loading times can be annoying but on the other hand it gives me time to think about my next move.
Wow gaming and thinking together..hell yea.

Highly recommended RPG for mood and setting - nice feeling of everything going to pot in the world that few games with that kind of premise capture. Not very far yet, but feels addictive

GameDaily hated it, but they're pretty hard to take seriously with paragraphs like this: "and nothing is quite as annoying as waiting for some NPC to wake up, or for the sun to set so that some monsters can finally rise out of the water" yeah - could we just have an RPG that takes place in a world where it's always noon? There IS a rest option, guys...

Looooong load times as has been mentioned. Dialogue can be Eastern-european -silly at times but hey, it's an RPG. Combat takes a little getting used to, and feels overly simple to start with, but opens up more and more. Overall it feels to me like what I'd hoped NWN 2 had been... so far I'd give it an arbitrary 8 of 10 score with a 9 for mood.

2gig RAM and a 7900GT running it just fine at max settings.

Game is good, however you may want steady supply of snack or drinks for the time wasted through loading screens everywhere. Or maybe TV close near.

Yeah, this is one of those games I *really* want a demo before I commit.

Warning to people with 1 gig of ram, during the cutscenes it will barely run at all unless you get another gig, A scene will begin, and you will hear audio, but you wont see anything, and then a still image will appear, and for pretty much the entire cutscene except for a few scenes you will be watching a slideshow, trying to figure out whats going on.

The gameplay itself will be fine, some pauses here and there but very smooth, but once the cutscenes start, good luck.
