ETQW Patch Plans - VOIP Support and more

The Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Website has an update outlining plans for the next patch for Splash Damage's teamplay shooter. The update, from Paul 'Locki' Wedgwood, mentions the upcoming version 1.2 patch will incorporate bot improvements, UI improvements, refined fire teams and Stopwatch mode, and fully integrated VOIP support.

Though, as much as I love the game. F'in idiots for not having built-in VOIP.

And there better be a god damn ignore feature or I am blowing up SD and id.

I almost think this is too little, too late. Quake Wars is so sparsely played compared to other games that have been out for a while that this might not encourage anyone to come back. With games like TF2 already out and UT3 out in a few weeks, QW feels tired already.

Sadly, I agree with you. Sad why you ask? Because I spent $50 on the Steam version. QW is sort of fun, but not that fun. TF2 whips its ass.

I was so psyched for this game until I actually played it. ETW was simple elegant and strategic. ETQW is just too f'in complicated. I actually tried out the demo twice on an old machine and a new machine with a 8800 GTX on it, hardly worth playing again.

TF2 is the shit and I'm hoping UT 3 will be also.

I played the UT3 beta demo, and I love the feeling of that game.. even though it was not the finalized version. It still had the right look and feel, the weps were spot on.. just felt right.

I played the QW beta for a long time, and while I liked it at first, within a short period of time I was rather "blah" about it. It had too many issues that I knew needed to be addressed, and I mentioned them to the devs, but just like my feedback on Tribes:V.. it went ignored. Lots of people had great feedback and we called the low numbers. Now I read about the issues people have and why they aren't playing any more, and they are spot on to my comments previously.


Now I look at the gamespy top games and QW is not nearly where it should be at all. It's ranked 15th, just behind the Halo demo and SoF2.. wtf? The publisher/dev/game name alone should put this in the 5-10k range.. it's barely visible at 1,338 players. That speaks VOLUMES.

I wouldn't even say QW is complicated, as for all the features it has, you can wholly overlook them and still win. I won't get into all of my personal feelings, but I will say that the features of the game, don't match the mechanics.

I just picked up Orange Box a few days ago, and after playing through Portal the first night (seriously one of the most fun games I've played in a looong time, over too quick), I have been playing TF2 almost exclusively since then. I liked QW too, but it just can't compete with TF2 and probably not with UT3 either, judging from the demo.

Would someone please tell me what's so great about TF2. I played every major multiplayer game since Quake 1 and TF2 just feels like a step backwards. Too confined, too crowded, too simple. I really tried to get into it but it didnt work out. UT3 is just more of exactly the same thing, also no evolution here. Quake Wars on the other hand didn't let me go - exactly the right balance between fast paced fragging and tactical gameplay. Never a dull moment there once you actually pay attention to the on screen advice the game is giving you.
Now people here are flaming the game because there aren't as much players as in TF2 or because it's too complicated - that's just retarded.
Now to my initial question. Please tell me why TF2 is so great.

Simply put TF2 is Wolf-ET without the objectives besides capture the flag and control points. It was intense because it was close quarters, sorta like twitch gaming.

Quake Wars from my 2 experiences was just very sparse. Even on full servers everybody seemed very far away.

I've always believed when you add vehicles to a FPS it essentially is no longer an FPS, because you are always going to prefer driving and using the heavier guns or faster vehicles to walking and gunning. They should call it V-FPS.

I've played UT2K4 and it was just not as fun as the original UT.

Advice to FPS makers of the future: keep the vehicles out otherwise make it so you don't need to get out.

its not that great. i agree with you that quake wars is more evolved. ut3 and tf2 are just the same old shooters with new graphics.

And whats wrong with taking a fun game bringing it up to date, graphically, with the latest graphics technology? Team Fortress was fun. Why do people change the background of the desktop every so often? Same old desktop right? But with a new look. Its refreshing. Same with games. Games are supposed to be fun and the formula for making an FPS = FUN probably isnt going to change dramatically. Any game that id is involved normally lacks the 'fun' element. I know its probably a coincidence since, as far as I know, Carmack wasnt directly involving in coding the gameplay for ETQW. Maybe its just bad luck.

Well I like Quake Wars due to its expansive nature...TF2 is too cramped and a twitch game to the extreme. I'd say QW was a thinking persons TF2.

I can't wait for the VOIP patch, it should be awesome. I own both QW and TF2 and I've gotta say QW beats it hands down. TF2 is fun, but its so "stupid" I can't play it for more than a map or two. Valve needs to stop remaking ancient mods, especially if they are going to dumb them down and release them with 6 maps after like 6 years.

TF2 is a design masterpiece. The classes are simple, but strongly typed. If you pick a class there is no question as to your job and how you effect the team. The maps tend to be very well designed. The graphical style they chose also fits the game incredibly well. Just a lot of little nuances make this a great game. You may not like TF2 (some people don't like pizza), but it certainly is a great game. It just may not be your cup of tea.
