MMO KOTOR?

Primotech has a story from Friday titled "BioWare’s Upcoming MMO Based in KOTOR Universe," which says just that, that BioWare's coming unnamed MMOG is based on Knights of the Old Republic, the highly regarded Star Wars RPG series. The report, said to be based on "a source close to BioWare," puts the game's release at some point during 2009. Thanks GameSpot, who ran this past their "rumor control" Magic 8-Ball and came up with one of those "Reply hazy, try again" answers.

This makes me, of course, quite happy. 0% chance going back to SWG now, even with the upcoming pre-CU emu. My heart lies elsewhere.

2009 is practically a decade away in gaming years. Shit, I'm still waiting for Conan.

I find this kind of odd actually. LucasArts owns the rights to KoTOR which means that BioWare, now an EA subsidiary is developing an MMO to be owned by LucasArts?

With the excpetion of some hardcore RP nuts, who the hell would want to be anything but a Jedi in a game like this? A whole game full of Jedi. Boring. I can see it now...

Jedi Rogue
Jedi Wizard
Jedi Priest
Jedi Tank
Jedi Crafter

What the hell would a Jedi need to craft outside a lightsaber when you can use the Force to do/get what you want? KOTOR works as a single-player game to be sure. Hell, maybe even limited multiplayer/co-op, but as a MOG?
I would have love to see Bioware do a MOG based on the Forgotten Realms. Now that would be something to see!

As would I but I'm still quite sour after KOTOR2 - I was over halfway when I came across a bug that wiped out all my progress, not to mention the bugs, performance issues and missing ending debacle. As long as any sequel is like the original then I'd be very happy... the graphics were beautiful, the gameplay unique and the plot pretty decent. I have no interest in yet another company trying to cash in on the who MMO genre.

Rather than wasting their time on this I wish they'd make a proper sequel to Tie Fighter - with all the graphical improvements since then it could be amazing. It's sad that the Star Wars universe has been let down by so many mediocre games... the potential is huge.

That's why it will take 500 hours of game time to become a Jedi, or whatever number will hook people into monthly fees for as long as possible. Didn't they already do that with the last Stars Wars MMO?

MMOs are like arcade games - the game is primarily designed to encourage the user to keep putting in coins. Fun is only one part of the equation.

Well Bioware is still 'new' into the EA fold, so if history is correct their product's shouldn't be EA'ized until the 3rd or 4th release.

So even with EA in the picture, EA would be stupid to screw with the magic that Bioware+Starwars can make.

Yeah, but...(don't you always love the yeah buts) KOTOR takes palce when the Jedi were plentiful and roamed the Galaxy. They were like cops, one one every corner. So given that the galaxy was lousy with Jedi, again, who'd want to play anything but one?

If this is true, the more then likely EA will not be the publisher for the game as they probably had some sort of contract with Lucasarts. If anything I'd put money that Microsoft would probably be the publisher.
