Hellgate: London Demo

The playable demo for Hellgate: London is now available, as promised, debuting on AOL's GameDaily, but also available elsewhere, which is contrary to the plan to hold off mirrors until tomorrow. Downloads of 1.5 GB sample of Flagship Studios' now-gold action/RPG are mirrored on 3D Downloads, 4players.de, ActionTrip, AusGamers, ComputerGames.ro, FanGaming, FileFront, FileShack, FilePlanet (registration required), Fragland, Gamer's Hell, HGLondon.net (torrent), Internode Games Network, and PixelRage.

yher yher, i like it.

;/ lol.

Thing is the game as far as i am concerned is something i am gonna buy, i like mindless games where you can Buzzz loads of enemys down, serious sam comes to mind.

i hate absolutly HATE games that cause me to think 2 much, i more your gun and gun type.

the idea of blasting thru tones of enemys online with my house mate, and finishing the game really appeals to me.

i wont be subscribing, just using the free play option, yes i know its limited but i still reckon its like 15 or so hours play, and that will do me, as i like this type of game.

its a BLATANT copy of diablo if you ask me, right down to town protals and such, and i really like that sort of thing and dungon runners is garbage, so yaya for hellgate.

(i also like the way the cone of fireworks, IE if you just run and gun, you dont hit shit, and basically endup taking 3 times as long to kill stuff).

Well.. What can I say? I guess I was one of those guys that were hyped by the idea of kicking deamon ass in London Streets. The story looked great! The "intro style" videos that were realesed from Flagship where giving me goosebumps and in general I was in this whole "oh boy! oh boy!" mood for the game to come out.

Aaaaand the demo did. And now I am like "Oh shit, oh shit." Unoriginal, linear, shallow, basically a Diablo copycat just forwarded up some Tech-levels so they added guns, nerve-recking ingame NPC voice acting that were screaming "DIABLO" and graphics that left stuff to be desired.

I mean common, Bill. You left Blizzard to create another Diablo? Were is the originality? Were is the "spank" that we look into every new game? Everything is old in concept.

And you expect me to splash my cash for this?

HAH!

Man this thread really reminded me why I stopped reading this site. So much hyperbole. I bet if you'd played the Diablo 2 barbarian-only demo, and if it had not been multiplayer-enabled, your comments on Diablo 2 might have been similar. Remember how Diablo 2 and all battle.net games had banner ads across the top in all chat rooms? Oh that's right, you conveniently forgot that, because before people starting complaining about WoW, Blizzard could do no evil. How about when they started gathering non-specific system information? Or when Valve did the same thing with Steam? That's right, conveniently forgotten. Yet you all still probably played D2, WC3, CS, etc. for years after these things were implemented.

I'll be honest. The demo was a disappointment. Worth calling the spawn of satan and the worst game ever created? Worth claiming that the designers/developers/ceo should be killed or eat their own excrement? Absolutely not. Based only on the demo, it's still more fun than 90% of the games that have come out for the PC in the past 3 years or so. And that's without making the assumption that the game gets better later on, and ignoring that it'd obviously be more fun multiplayer.

Whatever, it's not like I'm going to be here to read your well thought out replies about killing babies anyway, or that I'm being paid by EA to post positively about the game, or whatever retarded drivel you come up with.

Ok, Cheese sounds like a dev in disguise. And realizing the fact that he doesn't hog the intellectual spotlight with his spoken words, it kinda makes sense!

Ray, amen to you my man! Awesome words, and I totally agree!

This game is a godless abomination. Period.

D2 LOD looks like a piece of shit until you get used to it. Once that happens you have a game that is better than hellgate in every way.

Protip: if you want to click and collect some loot, stick to the grandfather cock, Diablo 2.

Cost to you:

50 dollars for the box.

10 dollars / month for a subscription (freeplay is so cut out hollow, you can’t play without a subscribing)

Expansion box cost (subscribers must pay for expansions too)

You see advertisements all over in the game.

I loved Diablo.

I couldn’t wait for Hellgate: London.

I played through HGL beta.

I cancelled my preorder.

I won’t touch the game now.

The game is priced just like an mmorpg, but it is most definitely NOT an mmorpg.

Example: For the melee toons, there are no axes, no hammers, no maces, no polearms, no spears, no two handed weapons whatsoever in the game so far. All melee uses are short swords.

Hear me well. The great deal of money that goes into the game will not be to make a great game, that money goes to make the company rich.

The ongoing added content that advertisements and subscriptions pay for , will be to add what we in other games already take for granted should have been in HGL before release. Wtf, are you kidding? One handed swords? That’s it? nothing else?

They’re going to add stuff like new 1h melee weapons and 2h weapons and act like they invented the wheel or invented fire, like they are working hard for you for all the money you spent, but I assure you, they are giving you a bad game.

The game is paper thin, shallow as a puddle.

I know companies make games to turn a profit, but man, the disparity between price, and what the game actually delivers, is HUGE.

Yeah, damned if I am going to support this type of crap under the promise of "It's so ZOMGWTFBBQ amazing at level 10!"

I'm sure there is some credence to it - that fugly turd thing called a "demo" looking nothing like the earlier videos or shots - but that just adds to my overall criticism.

The idea that is the real start to the game (a weak attempt to justify its level of crap?) Saddening.

That there are parts even worse than the bland, generic G4/E3 videos I saw? Scary.

That Roper/Flagship thought this would be a good demo? Stupid.

Based on just the demo, the game is purely a generic, mediocre budget FPS in a weak gothic setting. And not even a good budget shooter. From some unknown developer that sends out press releases full of engrish.
Props for the really low resolution textures, too.
Not sure why I would want ot need to play that thing with other people,
Ray

Awesome write up, Ray. You cover all the bases.

Like you, there was a time where I was excited about this game. But it seemed like each time the devs opened their mouths, it got worse.

The pay to play BS caused me to write it off. But then, here's great review in PCGamer, and hey, those screenshots look halfway decent.

Well, they look much much better than anything I saw in the demo.

Now, after reading responses over at Teh Shack, the comments seem to be "Well, it gets really good after level 10." Except I'm pretty sure the demo is limited to level 5.

I'm just astounded how this game started with such great promise, and then took an amazing decent into mediocrity.

And yeah, you said it, I said it, others have said it: The demo looks/plays like a budget title put out by a dev team you've never heard of (and pray to never hear from again).

I hate to be a total ass, as I'm sure there were some people that have put a lot of time and effort into this game, but...

Let me put it this way: We all crow about how we'll take game play and story over graphics any day. But what happens when a game has none of that?

That, to me, is HellGate, based on this demo. I want so very very badly to enjoy it, but the whole time I'm playing, I'm thinking "hmmm...Episode 2? Quake Wars? Portal? Bioshock? I could be playing any of those right now..."

It does not require a monthley fee only if you want xtra content wtf man get it right ok. true its not a good demo in that you cant do anything but the repetitive same thing over and over, this game strengths lie on the random quests and multitude of drops and the combining of items to make better stuff. yes the demo was a teaser but it was not well thought out for a demo. and in game advertising isnt that a big deal as you make it out to be. so what if i see a mountian dew sign or coca cola big fking deal man.

the real loosers if this is not a great title is us the gamers not your hate towards Bill Roper or any specific game company why are you so angry at them? Can you program better mabey? well whats holding you back i want to see your products and not hear your bullshit. otherwise pray we get good games and wait untill the final release but stop saying that retarded shit about its a monthley fee untill you do more research into it ok.

This is...it's just a piece of sh*t. Mind you, the game technically works, but at best, this is a $20 budget game. Carrying a $50 price tag, in-game advertising, a monthly fee, Electronic Arts, Flagship Studios, and Bill Roper, this is a piece of sh*t. For all the hype, interviews, artwork, this is a piece of sh*t.

This game is for mentally retarded people. If you played Diablo and thought it was too complex, this game is for you. If you hate every game from the last decade or so, this game is for you. If you hate innovation, this game is for you. If you hate quality, this game is for you. If you hate gameplay, this game is for you. If you hate story, this game is for you.

This game is the red-headed step-child of Diablo, but in a FPS mold and even more stupid.

If anybody reading this is from Flagship Studios, you should immediately apologize to the entire gaming industry, quit your job, and promise to never, ever work on another game.

At best, this is a generic $20 shooter. If you took that crap that is Second Life and tried to make a zombie FPS, that would be close to Hellgate. Further, given the poor quality of this game, it should be free to play monthly with revenue coming from the advertisements. If people really hate the advertisements, they should be able to pay, oh, $3 a month to turn them off.

The game is fuctional, but f*ck*ng bland and generic in every way possible.

Bland, ugly graphics? Check!

Generic, limited, repeated sound effects? Check!

Rough, jerky animations? Check!

Confined, linear levels? Check!

Unlimited ammo? Check!

Big, ugly interface? Check!

Incorrect FoV, making everything seem shrunkedn down? Check!

Generic NPCs without character? Check!

Simple...

dialogue...

broken...

up...

over...

a...

few...

pages?

Check!

Lifeless world devoid of animation or real interaction? Check!

Lack of a story? Check!

The ability to walk right into NPCs? Check!

Generic weapons with generic blast patterns? Check!

That shoot all over, easily missing things five feet away? Check!

Guns that cannot be used because you're not a melee toon?!? Check!

Battles that consist solely of circle-strafing or moving backward? Check!

Combat that entails holding down the attack button through the level? Check!

Simple FedEx quests that unlock in a linear fashion? Check!

Lack of overall direction or atmosphere? Check!

Miniscule, generic, pointless talents? Check!

I could go on and on, but you get the point. And this is already ridiculously long.

This is a functional, generic budget game. Even then, I would only rank it 6/10 for mindless action. As anything else, this game is a turd and Flagship deserves to fail.

We should not allow this type of sh*t in the industry.

I loved the early idea of this game as well as its artwork, but I became really hesitant after watching some of the early preview videos and each time Flagship opened its stupid mouth and talked about another dumb idea. But as much crap as I previously gave this game, I was holding out for an adequate single-player game or something so full of charm and atmosphere that you could turn a blind eye toward the seemingly stupid game.

After playing this demo, though...holy crap. It looks, plays, and is worse than I could have ever imagined. Even my craptacular prior expectations were way, way, way higher than this game was reaching.

If you really like this game...I do not know what, exactly to say. I guess I am glad that somebody found something fun to do, but I do honestly question your intelligence. For a stupid game, for an action game, for a Diablo game, for a quality game,...for any one of those choices, thre are soooooooooooooo many fantastically better games than this. I can find games from ten years ago that are fanstastically better than this turd.

Really, really shocked by how crappy this ended up being,
Ray Really. Wow. How the F*CK can they charge $50 for this? Or monthly?

I played it and it is not the worst game ever. It is the most uninspired and unoriginal game ever and plays like a free korean browser game, but it is not the worst game ever.

It lacks the atmosphere and the style of diablo. It lacks the heart of any game that has any heart. But the guns are interesting because you can't snipe zombies from rooftops in diablo. And it is addicting like diablo because of all the killing and collecting.

Also, here is the game story: click click click click click click

Maybe we've all just outgrown PC Gaming...

Either that or this demo is underwhelming. I should know by now that how much PCGamer fawns over a game has nothing to do with the game's actual potential.

I'm pretty sure that Blizzard's BRIGHTEST didn't leave Blizzard right after WoW came out, and as a result they now each own a giant island in the pacific somewhere.
