The Orange Box Midnight Madness

This week's Steam marketing message reassures those purchasing The Orange Box over Steam will have access to the shooter bundle at the stroke of Midnight Pacific time on Wednesday:
We'll be unlocking The Orange Box products just after midnight Pacific time next week on the 10th of October. Lots of people have been having a lot of fun with the Team Fortress 2 beta, so we're looking forward to seeing what people think of Portal and Episode Two. The Orange Box will also be available at North American game retailers later on the 10th, for both PC and XBOX 360.

heh - not staying up for this one.

Makes the rest of the week just too damn hard.

I gave them the 44 bucks just for TF2 and it's been easily worth it. Chances are I'll never even play EP2. Never cared for HL2's single player game after the gravity gun is introduced.

Portals looking pretty fun as something to mess with. So 44 bucks for a killer online fps to play again and a decent puzzle game. Thats easily worth what I'd blow in just my first hour of buying drinks at the bar.

Are you guys forgetting Portals and TF2?

Portals looks to be a really worthwhile addition to the whole package. I'm really looking forward to some creative brain bending puzzles with the portal gun. In fact, I'm looking forward to this almost as much as Ep2.

If you're not into online shooters, I guess TF2 is irrelevant, but I've been having a blast in the beta.

It's NOT just Ep2.

$44.99 for a short expansion I dont think so, especially not with so many new games to buy this fall.

Now if valve could ever get off there ass and do Halflife 3 well....

Geez..Good thing I read the comments in here.
I hated EP1 so I did not read much on EP2 or ORange box. \

Wow..so Orange box is HL2, EP1 , EP2, portal & TF2... Like banddirector said why pay an extra 15% for stuff I already own..

Orange box should have been a 360..those who know the story behind the xbox version of HL2 & the diff between that one & the one in ORange box know what I mean.

ANyways..I'll wait for EP2

I really enjoyed all of HL, HL2 and Ep1 (and have played them all multiple times), but I'll be damned if I'm going to buy the "Orange Box" just so I'll have Ep2 on "opening day". I just don't understand why someone would want to waste an extra $15 on something they already own. Is it really that big of a deal to play the game the second it comes out? And, based on my pre-sale experience with Bioshock, it will take most of a day anyway just to "unlock" and finish downloading special files on an overwhelmed server.

I'd like to point out, so people don't have to do look up time differentials and do math, that 00:00 in Pacific time (PST) is 09:00 in European time (CET)

I might be wrong, but I thought it was not being released until the 18th in Europe? Or is that just retail?

Still miffed that they canceled the Black Box, and I'm still not buying this until I get a package that doesn't make me purchase HL2 and Ep1 again.

They're not making you do anything. The Orange Box is an amazing deal as it is now. HL2/Ep1 are just included for free. Your loss if you don't get it...

Are you guys really that concerned about whether a cartoon comes out on Wednesday or Thursday???

I'm not buying this until it's on Ebay for $20 or less. But hey, if you're that easy to advertise to, then can I advertise my business here so you'll send me money? I'll just ask blue to make a news statement when I think of a new thing to sell, then when I announce it, then while I'm working on it there will be about 5-8 news blurbs, and finally when I'm getting ready to go public there will be a few beta news reports and several gold reports. In all, I won't really have to MAKE ANYTHING AT ALL, blue will make the hype for me and I'll just steal your money and run to Mexico.

Zeph is just very very dumb.

So midnight PST on October 10th. OK, so with the inevitable server overload that always happens when Steam releases a new game, we should have access to it sometimes around 48 hours after that.

I always think of midnight as the end of the day (11:59PM going into 12:00AM) and anything past 12:00AM (even by one second) as morning. Usually prefaced with an "early."
That's why Valve made clear in earlier announcements that it would be unlocked 12:01am on October 10th - adding that extra minute makes it a whole lot less confusing (even though to me it is common sense).

Steam users will be able to play at midnight (PST) on the 9th, and stores will have it when they open their doors on that day. I don't see a problem with it, really.

The Brick & mortar chains are NOT fans of DD. The number one reason why DD games are held back until the retail boxed versions are ready is due to the retail chains crying foul over unfair competition. My post touches on the fact that the B&M chains have been treating PC games like the proverbial redheaded stepchild by burying them at their stores yet they insist on a level playing field for release dates.

I just finished playing through HL2 and Ep1 to get ready for Ep2 and, though the gameplay is polished, I am less than thrilled with the story aspect.
I hear you. While I loved the general feeling and most gameplay aspects of HL2, it lacked any real story driven motivation for the player to advance, making him feel like he's not having an impact on anything in the game universe. EP1 even aggravated that by still refusing to give any answers to the general plot and by simply making "advancement" the main goal again.

Heh, unlike you Ray, I couldn't be bothered to play through EP1 again, so I just gave me a quick rundown on the story events on that "Half-Life Saga" page (http://members.shaw.ca/halflifestory/timeline.htm) to get me back on track. Not surprising how the entire EP1 storyline fits into 2-3 paragraphs

However, I'm still looking forward to EP2 because even with underwhelming storytelling, Valve's SP games are still better than most others out there.

Okay, I guess it is just me.

I always think of midnight as the end of the day (11:59PM going into 12:00AM) and anything past 12:00AM (even by one second) as morning. Usually prefaced with an "early."

So long as I can play on Wednesday, that's the main thing. Playing at 12:01AM is even better.

I just really, really hope Ep2 actually does something with the freaking story and lasts more than two hours. I just finished playing through HL2 and Ep1 to get ready for Ep2 and, though the gameplay is polished, I am less than thrilled with the story aspect. And since Steam now logs how many hours I've played, I was really shocked at just how short Ep2 was.
Episodic gaming, you fail.
Not sure if I will play Portal or Ep2 first,
Ray
