Gold - Alpha Prime

Meridian4 announces the North American edition of Alpha Prime is gold, just 10 months after the Czech and Polish editions of Black Element Software's first-person shooter were declared complete (story). Word is:
Montreal, Quebec, Canada – October 4, 2007 – Meridian4 today announced that the updated and improved North American version of IDEA Games’ upcoming first-person shooter, Alpha Prime, has gone gold and has been sent to manufacturers. Alpha Prime will be available at retailers across North America and at leading digital distribution outlets like TotalGaming.net, Steam and Direct2Drive on November 6 for a suggested price of $19.99.

“Working with IDEA Games and Black Element has been great and all of the modifications for the North American audience went smoothly. Making Alpha Prime Vista compatible and adding full screen anti-aliasing has opened the game’s market and makes the game look fantastic,” said Jeff Giasson, Production Director at Meridian4. “Together with the visuals and the improved gameplay tweaks such as auto-aiming when leaning, adding damage when throwing objects and general combat balancing adjustments, Alpha Prime looks and plays fantastic.”

Somewhere deep in space, on the lifeless asteroid Alpha Prime, something has gone terribly wrong… The miners were warned that the mysterious element known as hubbardium was too dangerous to excavate, but the lure of unimaginable wealth was too strong. Now, something has happened to them and it’s up to the player to save them and face an unknown threat. Armed with an assortment of hi-tech weapons and the ability to hack into the station’s own automated defenses, their mission is simple; get in, get the survivors and get out!

Features of Alpha Prime include:

    • Make your way through 10 levels of fast-paced, unrelenting action including mining station, spaceship hangar, magnetic railway and asteroid surface.
    • Non-playable characters aid you in your mission to save the miners and get off the asteroid.
    • Battle countless enemies including Special Forces soldiers, robots and deranged miners.
    • Unleash your arsenal of 8 futuristic weapons including pistols, shotguns, machine guns, grenades.
    • Use vehicles to move to different locations quickly.
    • Hack into devices including robots, surveillance cameras, security systems, doors, etc.
    • Bullet time allows players to temporarily slow down the action and get the upper hand.
    • Connect three screens with Matrox TripleHead2Go™.

wow support for a non-nvidia non-ati card is listed as a feature. heh.

Heh. TripleHead2Go is not a card, it's an external module that splits video FROM an Nvidia/ATI card to 3 monitors for surround gaming.

kegetys also made a software version in all his infinite programming wisdom., and called it SoftTH. That guy is a genius.

There's an entire section on Surround Gaming at the Widescreen Gaming Forum if you're interested in learning about what it is.

hubbardium? as in named after L.Ron.Hubbard? Scientology related title? Someone pls correct me thx.

This same discussion happened on numerous german forums. I think it's just an odd coincidence. Here's an excerpt, roughly translated into English, from CNET.de...

Hubbardium - which is the material, from which the dreams are. At least in “alpha Prime”, a Sci Fi Shooter for Gamer of age. Under days the diminished raw material, whose designation with security is ajar not coincidentally against the name of the Scientology sect of “inventor” L. Ron Hubbard, has rather engraving effects on humans. When in a mine ever more worker disappear, the powerful “Hubbardium Mining corporation” sends a reconnaissance patrol. But before the spaceship can land surely on the Asteroiden “alpha Prime”, it is fired at - the Albtraum begins.

Not sure about the game itself but making it available via Steam/Direct2Drive and at $20 that's a real good deal. However I'm a little concerned with a meta-score of 58% from metacritic and 55% from gamerankings.com.

Why then is a video card feature listen in the press release as a game feature?

Yeah, no shit.
You need better translators to push a product quicker than 10 months!
Actually, Meridian4 and the devs went back and tweaked a lot of stuff that was criticized in the European version of the game -- it's not impossibly difficult, they fixed up some of the dialogue/text and added some technical features (FSAA in Vista, for example). (Disclosure -- I'm handling PR on the title for Meridian4)

Wow played the demo last year...for 20$ I would get it. The only probleme is the number games coming out between now & X-mas.

One of those games I was looking forward to but got bumped of the list when all the other games got pushed back to Q4 2007.

On the verge of dropping 2 tokens on this through Stardock's TotalGaming. I heard good things about this, so spending $12 worth of tokens on this seems a worthy gamble.

Yeah, if I remember correct I had the same response as Elf Shoot to the demo.

Might pick it up later on steam for $20 or less!

The demo for this was quite respectable: decent gameplay and solid aesthetics. Ran very nicely too.

Voice-acting was kind of cheesy/lame though.
