Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm Announced

This press release officially announces Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm, the expansion for Relic's RTS game that was recently unveiled by a magazine cover image (story). Here's word on the expansion, due in the spring, which will be a standalone release, not requiring the original game to play:
THQ Inc. today announced Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm, the next standalone chapter in internal studio Relic Entertainment's award-winning Real-Time Strategy (RTS) franchise, is scheduled for release on Windows PC in spring 2008. Featuring an extensive interplanetary campaign spanning an entire star system in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm introduces two all-new factions for an unprecedented total of nine playable races. "Relic Entertainment has set the standard for technical excellence and innovation in the RTS genre," said Bob Aniello, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, THQ. "Dawn of War - Soulstorm continues that tradition as a standalone title featuring all-new, brutally addictive single and multiplayer game-play that will hook newcomers and skilled Dawn of War veterans alike."

"In Dawn of War - Soulstorm, we've taken Games Workshop's epic war from one planet to an entire star system," said Tarrnie Williams, general manager, Relic Entertainment. "Allowing gamers to play nine unique races, introducing air units and providing multiplayer achievements for the first time creates a tremendous amount of new and challenging strategic gameplay for all players."

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm is set in Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 universe - a dark, futuristic, fantasy setting where armies of technologically advanced warriors, fighting machines and hordes of implacable aliens wage constant war - and is played by millions worldwide. Executive produced and co-developed by Relic Entertainment in association with Iron Lore Entertainment, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm is a complete standalone title and will feature two all-new armies, including the malicious Dark Eldar, for an unprecedented total of nine playable races. In addition to new units across each of the seven existing races, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm will incorporate air units for the first time and introduce multiplayer medals, adding a whole new level of depth to online battles. The revolutionary meta-game introduced in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Dark Crusade is further expanded to an interplanetary scale in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm, allowing players to battle across an entire star system.

So, Dark Eldar (yawn), and...my guess, if it's not going to by Tyranids, is Sisters of Battle (Adeptus Sororitas, Battle Sisters, Witch Hunters, whatever). A bit of a Space Marine/IG combo.

True story: Way back in the day I had two friends who played WH40k. One played Orcs, I played Space Marines, and the third, at our insistance, played Dark Eldar. We slaughtered him each and every time. It was just a lousy army back then, not sure it has been changed much since.

even tho Dark crusade is my favourite RTS of all time. i thought it was pushing it a bit, in terms of milking the fans.

to me this is an obvious milking of the fans. all of these new features should have just been added into a DoW2.

id be happy if they just grabbed all the assets from DoW and chucked it onto the Company of Heroes engine. that would be the most perfect combination ever!

I think everyone is starting to wonder why they are waiting to do this? I like seeing more content come out for this game and all, but we've all seen how awesome an RTS can be in Company of Heroes...so why not use that engine?

I am very excited about the air units coming into the game, that will be a lot of fun.

Watch Code Monkeys. It's really f-n good.

So will this feature widescreen support and anti-aliasing controls in-game? I was tempted by the Steam offer for the current DoW games but the lack of widescreen and anti-aliasing controls put me right off.

Dark Crusade supports widescreen, actually (don't remember about AA though).

"AA controls" isn't a problem, just set AF and AA in the control panel of your video driver. Works fine in Dark Crusade

I read that they can't do Tyranids justice in the current engine - they'll be in DoW 2

When I saw that solar system being blown up at the end of Dark Crusade, I had hoped that it was DoW2 they were showing off. Instead it's another expansion.

While I love DoW, and will most likely get this expansion too (but seriously? The Dark Eldar? I'm having trouble typing I'm so excited...), the engine is getting a bit long in the tooth and we've really seen it all before now.

PLEASE get to work on DoW2!!!!!

Much love,

Creston

Interviews with the developers stated that they did not have air units in the game, either, because of the engine. Because they are now including them, I'd assume they've at least updated the engine enough for this to be the case. It is not unheard of for companies to update their engines in expansion packs. Additionally, much of what is being added is enough to make it a standalone game, which the article does call it (standalone expansion). It is to be noted that Games Workshop has a habit, themselves, of releasing all their various games under one name. Given THQ/Relic is on contract with them, they could only have a license for one actual game title, GW has allowed for more work to be done, and so they kept it under the same name.

And again, given they listed air units, My guess is that Tyranids will be in this one, since as I said, air units were first not included because of the engine.

Finally, I personally think it'd be silly to include the Witch Hunters as a separate faction, since they already include the Grey Knights from the Daemonhunters rolled into the Space Marine faction, and typically you'd never see a full-blown out conquest performed by the Adeptus Sororitas as their work for the Ecclesiarchy is primarily internal.

Addendum: The Imperial Guard's assassin is part of the Daemonhunters, as well.

They have not confirmed or denied the game title "Dawn of War 2" at any time on any official capacity. For all intensive purposes, this is most likely IS Dawn of War 2, just without the 2. Note that it is taking place in an entire star system. At the end of Dark Crusade's credits, that is what we are shown, as the camera pulls away from Kronus and zooms through another bunch of worlds, ending on the words "2007".

Right, and they've never said that there will be a DoW2, either. So, like I said, this is what people have been anticipating based upon the only information Relic has released on any further developments towards the franchise.

Dark Crusade supports widescreen, actually (don't remember about AA though).
I was looking to buy it a while back but read that it did but that it was broken in a later patch and never fixed - I downloaded the demo but it didn't appear to support widescreen.

"AA controls" isn't a problem, just set AF and AA in the control panel of your video driver. Works fine in Dark Crusade
I did that and didn't notice a difference. I don't know whether that's because it was the Steam version, or because it was a demo, or because I did something wrong but I recall it didn't work. Bringing the feature into the game is just a good idea all round, as it means it will work and it makes it easier to improve the appearance of the game.

Widescreen has never been broken for me. Granted, it was never true widescreen in the first place. They actually chopped the top and bottom off of the standard resolution so that it was the right width but not the right height. Honestly, 1280x1024 on my 1680x1050 monitor had the same horizontal viewing distance, but a good bit more vertical viewing distance.

Awesome. This series ROCKS.

It might have something to do with the Steam Version. Assuming you're using Nvidia, make sure you get the right executable file in your game profile (maybe not use the default profile set up for the game)

I don't have it installed right now because I had to make a ridiculous amount of room to install Stranglehold off Direct2drive so I can't remember if there is an AA setting within the game - if there is, you can set it to low, then set it in profile to enhance the application setting, else override. I remember specifically using 16xAF and 16xQ AA from control panel and yes I know how to tell the difference

Note I'm talking about Dark Crusade here - can't remember exactly how the last expansion and the original handle this but I don't remember it not.
