Tabula Rasa Beta

The Tabula Rasa Beta on FilePlanet Page is now accepting sign-ups to beta test Tabula Rasa, in spite of the fact that Destination Games' MMORPG has already been declared gold (story). This beta seems open to registered users and not just paid subscribers, and this page has details on how those who pre-order in North America can earn 10 days of free gameplay.

Wow, that was shit. I logged in and connected to the European server with High population (the other option being US with low population) - I create my character, click create and BOOM... I'm disconnected. All the work I put into my character is gone and it won't let me reconnect. When I finally get back to the server screen I see that all the European servers are down and so I connect to the US server.

NEway, the graphics are very basic and the movement feels like an adventure game from the 90s. The quests are tedious and I wasn't bothered about any of the rest of it. I'm very unimpressed. The intro movie was the best thing about it.

the game might draw in the "deathmatch and capture the flag FPS" crowd. The fast pace of the combat is the only thing that stands out.

I quit the beta after a month and a half. On 9/6 They locked the wormhole to the 20-30 level area behind a series of long bugged quests. I had a level 27 killing level 19-20s and couldn't get any further.

Fun for the first few levels, then absolutely boring (and yeah, I hit the higher levels in beta). I wish this game had more time to prepare. They haven't even gotten their "new and improved" crafting system in to the game yet (supposedly next patch). That gives them what, 1 or 2 weeks to test a major game system? Riiight. The list of broken quests is quite impressive, and that's just for the lower-end content (because the higher end content just opened.. I'm sure they'll find some bugs there).

The logos system should be completely ripped out, pissed on, and thrown away because of the shit it is. The "class" system is in the same boat. Up until level 14, there are only 2 classes. This isn't a game. It's a demonstration of a combat engine that they can use in some other game.

Charging in to a group of bane with a shotgun is fun though.

yes... yes, it does. The quests are absolutely pathetic (way to reinvent the genre, Garriot) and the lore is almost exclusively revealed through line after line of textual dialog I couldn't be bothered to wade through.

Pretty much my thoughts.

Wading in with a shotgun and mowing down a group of bad guys never gets old... fighting groups of creatures is always more fun than just constantly trying to square off against one thing all the time.

yeah i think it needs more time to ass more content but as it is its pretty good in that the bane try to take over bases, kinda reminds me of BF or counterstrike in that reguard. anyhow im getting this one cause its different and its not a bad game at all.

I know you said that you played it most of the weekend, a weekend is nothing in comparison to playing it for weeks and weeks, months or years. The really fun stuff gets old super quick, then you're left with not much except mowing down tons of enemies.

Sure, no doubt that's true.

But to be perfectly honest, I don't look for much more in an MMO than I do in a single player game; if it's fun for me for a few weeks and I get some fun out of it it's all good to me. I like to play alone more than grouping anyway, so I'm not the typical MMO player... if I play with anyone else it's usually my wife, and she's still pretty enamored with WoW at the moment.

TR is great fun for a week or so, but then you've seen all there is to see. If they lightened up the XP and released it as a $30 single player game, they'd probably make a good chunk of change. As it stands though, the game isn't even fun for long when it's free.

I really can't see this game being successful, but I also thought WoW was just another generic fantasy MMORPG, so, whatever

I'm not interested in the mounts or what to ride in/on.. that was just an example.
like the others have said, I walked outside the base, blasted some guys, ran back in. k.
what's the big thing coming up? whats the cool stuff to look forward to?
All the quests i did were exactly the same.

when i first started playing Earth and Beyond (my first mmo) i knew all about the cool ship upgrades, the big raid battles, the exciting weapons. i saw defenders, gatherers, missile based ships, stealth ships, repair dudes.. it was awesome.. all this stuff out there and it looked great.

I just dont see whats out there, what the reason to keep logging in is, like they said "wheres the carrot"? my caracter at level 5 felt no different than lvl 25. okay maybe my guns bullets were green instead of blue.. yay?

lack of classes, or should i say, lack of a good distinction in classes, and only one race doesnt help either.

I also agree. Also there is no really good content for this game. It's just like City of Heroes, Looks good but missions/quests are extremly lack luster and boring as hell. There is no sense of urgency to connect the gameplay to the rather nice looking but boring as hell CGI intro.

Honestly this game needs about 6 months of solid content creation put into the missions etc before it's released.

I agree with Florida on all of his points. The loot wasn't very exciting, the quests were your standard fetch/fedex quests as well. It all felt very thin, but on the bright side its not far from being a really great game. I'm going to hold off and see where it goes.

I get into a lot of betas, and most of those betas always had me going "oooh, ahhh - I cant wait to get xyz skill, or xyz item, or until I can get a mounts, etc". With TR you just don't have that, there is not real carrot being dangled in front of your face, after being in the beta for a while you kinda just wonder what is the point? So, your run out and blast crap for 15 minutes, or until you're bored, then you log off.

Florida:

You seem to be very concerned with what you get to ride on in the game, with all the talk of mounts, epic mounts, flying mounts, and cars.

One of the things that put me off of this game was the fact that i had no idea wtf was coming in the future, as in: what to look forward to. In WoW I knew what i could look forward to. not so much in TR. Also, I was in the early beta and not terribly impressed with the content. i'm sure there is more now though.

I want to know what the TR equivalent to mounts, epic mounts, Onyxia, Raids, epics, flying mounts, etc is.. because i didnt see it

question: why in the future, do I not have a cool vehicle? i warp to and from bases, but then walk everywhere?
I also despise the cave settings, reminds of the awkward and ugly CoH caves. Cant navigate out of them for shit.

I also didnt really dig the combat. Lastly.. the game felt like CoH/AA..and not in a good way either. Those games felt very "light" and generic. I cant qualify that statement, but they felt that way..

I agree, the game has great potential - and we could certainly use another sci-fi MMOG right now because I'm sick of dwarfs and elves. But at the moment TR is thin.

As long as this game is free it's an ok game. The moment it goes to a pay for play system (IE goes from beta to release) it's going to suck.

You can be a human male, or human female! And then you can be a soldier or a specialist! What kind of crazy custom classes can we come up with with 1 race and 2 classes!!!! How do I decide!!!

Technically each class, Soldier/Specialist, has sub classes that make them a bit more unique but it feels like there is almost no variety in the avatars. And everyone can use magic too. You see the same folks using the same weapons way too often. It feels like this game is missing some MAJOR content.

I want to be a bad guy and ride a drop ship into Noob town and kill some noobs! Why on earth didn't they make it possible to ride those drop ships around!? There is definitely some cool stuff happening but it doesn't ever seem to let you participate.

Watch Code Monkeys. It's really f-n good.

I'm in beta, have been since late spring. I don't have it installed right now, figure I've payed my does of beta-testing. The games not my style, it's far to shallow. I'd rather play Hellgate: London or Team Fortress 2 betas any day of the week.
