Team Fortress 2 Beta Live

The promised Team Fortress 2 beta went live overnight on Steam, presumably before midnight Pacific time to fulfill the promised September 17 release. The beta is open to those who have pre-purchased the Orange Box Half-Life 2 bundle.

Talking to some coworkers has got me wanting to try it some more. First impressions aren't always good. Sometimes it's hard to put expectations or "I wish they would have..." views behind. Hoping it grows on me more. For the most part it seemed they took the path of stuff that I wanted to see out of TF mods for years. If I can't enjoy it that means I ultimately don't know what I like anymore hehe.

Is what I am.

When you say FF I think of Final Fantasy. But you seem to be talking about a shooter of some kind. Please clarify.

Good to see some positive comments about the game.

Good to see people realize not all games have to be like an old school Rainbow 6 game & that speed is not always a bad thing.

All you mofos need to work like me during the day and not play TF2.

I'm not preordering so all I can do is watch like a voyeur.

I just prefer a game that gets the blood flowing a bit more and doesnt kill the action with a 20 second respawn timer.
I'm not a fan of long respawn timers either, so my favourites list consists of servers with very low timers - it makes for a much more fun game.

I may still end up doing bots for it. I've developed Omni-bot for ET, Q4, D3, and currently FF. If Valve delivers on their promise to address the bot SDK shortcomings I definately plan to support HL2 mods as well, including possibly TF2. We'll see.
That's fair enough. I knew there were bots for CSS, when your post said there weren't bots for ANY Valve games, but I didn't know about the SDK limitations for 3rd party bots.

Grow up a little and read my comments for what they are, opinion.
No. What you posted was very confrontational and I responded to that. Your post this time is much more reasonable and therefore I'm not going to kick up a fuss. I'm not here to start fights and I accept you have made some perfectly valid points. As for the speed - I suggest you try some different maps and some different servers... the gameplay is certainly there. At first I thought the heavy was next to useless and too slow but it just took me a bit of time to get used to the changes.

You know - has everyone who played just clicked through so fast that they didn't watch the "films" of the map?

Watch the video, VERY funny (although it is a cute feature).

Nope, jumped right in, no patience for such things, especially after my bad start with technical difficulties.

Saw them on Youtube before the game unlocked, so I havent watched them in-game. But great tool for getting new players up to speed and shorten the learning curve.

As a note: Crysis has a similar tutorial video, kinda long though. And its just one map, so it's just one tutorial vid. Not sure if they will have it for all maps.

Yeah, I just played on a server with <= 5 second spawn, hectic action.

The pace reminds me of TFC, fast and nuts.

How is TF2 not fast frantic gameplay?

In TF2 players move slower, but the maps are far far smaller than those in FF. Of what Ive played of TF2, it has been frantic action at every turn. No different than FF. I played FF for the last 4 days or so and enjoyed it, but it has the same shortcomings as TF and TFC.

Anyways, the large maps in FF compensate for the player speed, or vice versa. TF2 has smaller maps, slower movement speeds. But the action was still crazy in both. Personally I find FF too fast, and I don't miss the conc's or the nade spam.

Erm... Counter-Strike Source has bots and TF2 will have bots sometime after release, along with extra maps.

CS has official commercial bots built in. TF2, DOD:S do not, and there is no indication that either will have full blown mp bots that I've seen. Valve has indicated though that they plan to finally address the shortcomings of the bot SDK so 3rd party bots can be done, something that's been requested and push for for years. They have indicated this with the video interview with gabe, and on the hlcoders mailing list.

I'm sorry but last time I played it had a LOT of gameplay to it and was more enjoyable than TFC.

Nonsense. Just because the game is more accessible to new users does NOT make it worse for experienced users. Now instead of everybody conc-jumping everywhere, nading spawns and shouting n00b at heavy weapons guys we have a much more balanced game.

Fair enough. As I said in my original post to each their own. Nobody is spewing shit or provoking reaction. I stated what is clearly my opinion and why I have that opinion. The blues news crowd is hardly a representative sample of everyone loving the game. There are plenty of people that have similar dislikes. Read the steam forums, or the FF forums(queue the screams about bias). I am far from the "only one" that doesn't have a good impression so far. I accept that I am the minority that likes fast frantic gameplay these days, and no I don't like some aspects of pre TF2 TF either, like nade spamming and BH and shit, and due to that was very excited at the potential of TF2, I just prefer a game that gets the blood flowing a bit more and doesnt kill the action with a 20 second respawn timer. Had they not gone as far as they did slowing it down it would be perfect for me. I welcome less spam and no BH, I don't necessarily like the extreme pace reduction. Maybe I can get used to it, we'll see. I'm certainly willing to give it more time.

I want to play on some servers that are apparently lowering the respawn delay a bit. Maybe it will grow on me. I may still end up doing bots for it. I've developed Omni-bot for ET, Q4, D3, and currently FF. If Valve delivers on their promise to address the bot SDK shortcomings I definately plan to support HL2 mods as well, including possibly TF2. We'll see. Grow up a little and read my comments for what they are, opinion. The comparison to Riley is proof enough you have a reading comprehension issue, as my post was nothing like his. Not once did I attack anyones preference, which is more than can be said for you, nor did I attack Valve, Steam, etc.

Wouldn't entirely count on that. Day of Defeat still doesn't have bots. Personally I could care less about bots. Bots overrunning the CSS & DoDs servers almost killed the community.

I had sent an email awhile back to Gabe himself, that ended up prompting the changes to the server browser showing how many bots were connected to the servers and disabling the fake client plugin. How do I know this? Cus Gabe replied to my email, thanking me for the email. These changes really breathed fresh life back into the communities for CSS and DoDs which were being stifled by bots and fake-client bots.

They have 'consolized' Team Fortress, and you guys are eating it up.

Yea, TF2 isnt consolized at all. The front-end (menu's) are all slick, fast and easy to navigate. As are the in-game menu's and HUD displays.

But yea, I didn't respond to Dr Evil since it sounds a lot like he was commenting on the game without having played it, since no specifics were offered.

Told ya before, give me your login info and I bet I can get your account back with little hassle. What have you got to lose? Not like I'm going to steal your account since you can't login anyways.
What has he got to lose? Maybe he's afraid you're right, and then he won't be able to mock Valve as much anymore.

I'm actually looking forward to giving this a go. I haven't been interested in a multiplayer game (apart from the occasional MMO that I tried and quickly gave up) since Battlefield 1942, so I guess it's saying something that I want to try this one.
