Team Fortress 2 Beta Live

The promised Team Fortress 2 beta went live overnight on Steam, presumably before midnight Pacific time to fulfill the promised September 17 release. The beta is open to those who have pre-purchased the Orange Box Half-Life 2 bundle.

I'd say you did get screwed because you had to pay for the game in full in advance to play the demo.
It's nothing of the sort. People paying for the game online are getting early access whilst the game is being reproduced for retail - it's called a "beta" so as to not mess up the deal they have with EA. This was, back in the day, one of the biggest criticisms you had with online business model... not being able to play the game when it was finished - Valve changes that and now you label it a demo and criticise them? As I've said before they CANNOT win with you. Whatever they do they lose so you can fuck off.

That's because without Steam for the 360, Valve couldn't make the console players pay in advance to get a demo and it is too greedy to do a free demo.
Of course they could... they could have charged for access via Xbox Live. However, without an online distribution system (due to the limited hard-drive capacity and infrastructure of the console) they have to wait for the game to be produced.

So once again Riley you prove yourself to be a baseless Valve basher. I hope you get impaled upon a HIV infected needle and die a slow, debilitating death. Probably quite likely as your older step-sister is still dealing heroin around where I live... I think I'll give her a slap next time I see her.

If I order the Orange box now, even though the beta is out I still get it right?.. Seriously considering this.

/Haven't even played HL2 or above.. seriously.. So its a good deal for me.

No TF2 demo "beta" for 360 users!

Do eeeet! Even in "beta" form, TF2 is a blast!

I rationalized figured Valve is not going to offer any cheaper packages, Valve is only going to sell the individual games for crazy amounts, and Valve is going to heavily push the "all-in-one" packaging.

So thinking I have a very good chance of never having a cheaper package and knowing I wanted to play/buy all three games anyway, would I like to purchase it now, gaining access to the game beta, or wait another three or so week?

I do think the pricing scheme is sh*tty on Valve's part. And I do think Valve should give some part of TF2 free to the community that has waited since the days of HL1. Even if the non-subscribers received only a single level to play.

It will be interesting to see what magical price Valve pulls out of its ass for Ep3...

This does that. It is very exciting again.

No kidding. I can't wait to get home from work.

Last night was kinda funny. Waiting impatiently along with everyone else. Finally get the game loaded and the first map Im on is Dustbowl. We are all standing there waiting for the gate to blow open...So I take that time to start looking over the class models. I'm sure it had a little to do with the herb, but I actually started giggling while I was looking at the models, the maps, etc and realizing I was about to play TF2 for the first time.

Earlier in the evening when I loaded up Crysis beta for the first time, I didnt last 10min before I had to Alt-Tab out to see if TF2 was out yet But the overall feeling for Crysis was it looks great, and plays alright...it just give me the warm fuzzy feeling TF2 does.

I remember back in the day when I was excited as much as xXBatmanXx is about TF2, when I would rave to anyone who would listen to me about how t0tally r0x0rz teh TF2 hotness is!!... *poke*

hehheeh - there are VERY few games I get excited about.

I am of the "older" gaming community, and this game is looooooong awaited. Some of us have been waiting for this game longer than a lot of these kids have been playing games!

No offense taken - but it takes a lot to get me excited about this stuff. I am in the same place, life, work, house, dogs, lady, all comes before games...and therefore, when you do get a chance to play, it takes a lot to keep you playing, cause all that other stuff is still in your head...back there somewhere.

This does that. It is very exciting again.

I'm still older than both of ya.

Ok, I'll ante in. I'll be 35, come Nov.

Still trying to justify whether or not to play Valve's game and re-buy something I already own, just to be able to not get gouged an additional $35. Sadly, another business model that I'm sure will soon be adopted by everyone. Get used to a thinner wallet everyone.

Hmmm? Well, I gotta go. 'Ta put my teeth back in and call the nurse to bring me my pills...

Ecthelion, I think he is refering to the animated "map" background for the main menu as opposed to the static jpg image for the background.

As far as I know this has to be commented out in a file. I'll look when I get home in a couple hours, and post it then, if it hasn't already.

DrEvil, you don't like the game because you expected it to be similar to what you've no doubt played countless hours of, and I totally hear you. I'm the same way with UT200* vs the original UT, Tribes 2 vs Tribes, or even Quake 2 vs QuakeWorld.

Luckily for me, I somehow managed to avoid playing any version of TF before (too wrapped up in Quake/UT/RTCW), so to me it's all fresh. And from that point of view, this game is a-w-e-s-o-m-e. This is what a team based FPS should be.

They absolutely nailed the little things like the feel of the combat, interesting but clean maps, player visibility, engine performance, etc. Don't take any of these things for granted, there are very few multiplayer focused FPS games coming out and all of them are getting at least one of these wrong. Look at ETQW - uneven performance, can't distinguish classes, jerky combat feel. Just one example. TF2 gets the fundamentals right. I love it.

btw: anyone remember offhand the command line option to disable the title screen background map
-console

A lot of the command-line options can be found here: http://www.tweakguides.com/HL2_7.html. I like the one that disables the Valve video, myself. I really don't need to see it every time a game loads.

I'm still older than both of ya. I find my interests shrinking compared to the past, where'd I'd be interested in "everything". Have to admit when it comes to FPS multiplayer, I choose the Source engine games.

If there is a commandline, I dont know what it is. But in one of the files you can edit with notepad, and comment out the line that tells the game not to use the map.

I'm at work so I can't look it up right now. You could probably Google it pretty easily enough...or check Steam forums.

Anybody know if the Orange Box HL2 has HL2 DM and CSS?
Some cursory searching on the Steam site seems to indicate that Orange Box will not include HL2: DM or CS: S, but it's possible that they just don't have everything updated yet, so it's hard to say for sure.

But dammit I'm only 28. I can't be the old guy that can't enjoy any games. I suppose that large part of why I code bots. These days I get more enjoyment out of making stuff than playing it. Bots are one of the few 'mod' type things you can do solo without depending on an internet full of unreliable help.

+1 for aging gamer. And I'm only 26. I guess getting married, owning a house, and having an actual career have accelerated this aging thing.

Will be buying the Orange Box and selling gifting my original HL2. Anybody know if the Orange Box HL2 has HL2 DM and CSS? (I still know some acronyms, dammit)

But you seem to be talking about a shooter of some kind. Please clarify.

Fortress Forever mod, which is more of a remake of the original TF & TFC. Was release on Friday, a few days ahead of it's own scheduled Sept 17th release date, to get the jump on TF2.

If I can't enjoy it that means I ultimately don't know what I like anymore hehe.
I suspect that's true of many of us "aging" gamers. Sometimes we spend so much time wrapped up in the past, we can't enjoy sequels to our favorite games even when they try really hard to be faithful to the originals.

Somebody should do a study on age and how it relates to how easy it is for gamers to find enjoyment in a game.
