Team Fortress 2 Beta Live

The promised Team Fortress 2 beta went live overnight on Steam, presumably before midnight Pacific time to fulfill the promised September 17 release. The beta is open to those who have pre-purchased the Orange Box Half-Life 2 bundle.

Get a 7 foot CAT5 cable.
That was going to be my advice too. Honestly, if people weren't so obsessed with wireless, my troubleshooting at work would be cut by about half. But no - their neighbor has it, their friend has it, and their son has it, so they have to have it too.

(Any suggestions? All firmware is up-to-date, router is ~6 feet from the PC, etc...)

Get a 7 foot CAT5 cable.

I found that many games online with more than 4 players had lag no matter what you were using for wireless hardware, there is just so much over head (although not bandwidth) that wireless just seems to throw up on itself.

However, I'm still having latency issues due to my wireless network. BUT - moving from 802.11g to strict 802.11b cut the problem in about half, but it's still not as good as wired.

That's odd. Is it JUST this game, or all games? And are any of your neighbors on the same channel as you?

TF2 is a blast. I agree w/ Batman that Medic+Heavy is not OP'd if you just work on killing the medic.

Riley lacks the sense to work at a game developer, even as a receptionist.

btw: I played some more TF2 for alot longer yesterday than I passed judgment for the night before, and must say that it's growing on me fast. I think I hit a server with a lower respawn time, as it didnt bother me as much as the first server I played on. Definately going to do bots for it.

I was stabbed in the back enough last night by spys that I had to change tactics....they are the only ones that seem a little over powered IMO

Yea, one of the classes needs a proximity alarm that detects cloak but not disguises. Kinda similar to the trip alarm in The Hunted mod.

Uggh another long day of work has begun. Except at the end of this day I dont get to go home and play TF2. I have to go play Formula De boardgame for a league, only once a month, so sorta have to be there.

Has anyone been able to figure out what Valve competitor that Riley works for yet?

All the main ones except Epic have games on Steam...and have a good relationship with Valve.

edit: shoulda kept reading first...forgot about Monolith.

Fight the fight of self control. Don't buy it. I'm waiting for TF2 by itself for 29.99 on steam when it's released.

See, I think that is a waste of money...but I intend to play Portal and Ep2 as well.

I guess if you have zero interest in Ep2 or Portal you are saving $15. If so, have at it. Friend of mine is the same way. He is only interested in TF2, never played HL2 or Ep1 and never intends to, so he plans on getting it stand alone as well.

Oh, okay. I've never disliked the map background, so I've never bothered to try turning it off.

Actually...I got a reply from Robin Walker at around midnight last night, but didn't see it until this morning.

Your original suggestion of adding -console to the command line was correct. Never knew it disabled the 3d background.

I think most people like the 3d background, but the load time to the Main Menu is significantly reduced if you dont have the 3d background.

"Forget the heavy kill that medic!"

hehehehe true - but when the medic can hide behind a wall and the "healing" curves around the corner - it can be difficult.

I really enjoy being medic.

My favorite is sniping or "spying" the medic who's healing the heavy before he goes invulnerable...

Loving TF2 so far, although the Heavy + Medic combo seems a bit too powerful. It'll probably be toned down in retail which is a shame since nothing pumps up your blood as being a Heavy and getting a Medic to turn you invulnerable as you mow down the other team in a crowded chokepoint as your Heavy's shouting and laughing like a madman. Sweet "Dominating" heaven..

Too powerful?

I don't think so - the problem is that people are dumb enough to try and TAKE HIM ON!

I had multiple people just RUN INTO MY CoF as I was moving VERY SLOWLY and laughing my ass off.

It isn't that hard to HIDE form a big BLUE or RED glowing heavy for the 10 or so seconds he is invincible.

What is difficult is when 2-3 medics are ready to ubercharge all at the same time and link them together one after the other - now THAT is over kill. (pun intended)

I really don't see the need for any changes yet - but the spy - when he gets shot, he only shows for a second then goes back to being invisible! WTF!? Shouldn't SHOOTING the guy disrupt his cloak?

I was stabbed in the back enough last night by spys that I had to change tactics....they are the only ones that seem a little over powered IMO.

Demos are not full products.
Betas often are.
This is.

He wouldn't know that, since he never plays Valves games... or would never admit to it.

I'm sure it had a little to do with the herb, but I actually started giggling while I was looking at the models, the maps, etc and realizing I was about to play TF2 for the first time.

I'll be joining you on that sentiment tonight

All other games have been shelved until further notice, I am TF2's bitch now.

Still trying to justify whether or not to play Valve's game and re-buy something I already own, just to be able to not get gouged an additional $35. Sadly, another business model that I'm sure will soon be adopted by everyone. Get used to a thinner wallet everyone.

YOU didn't get screwed because being the Valve lapdog that you are, you would have paid twice the price for just a screenshot of TF2 three weeks early. The people who are getting screwed are the ones who want to try TF2 without having to buy it first especially without having to buy the whole Orange Box when all they really want is TF2.

If the game is as good as you claim, Valve would have nothing to lose by giving a free demo because most people would end up buying it. This is just a greedy tactic by Valve to scam money out of people who end up not liking the game or who wouldn't have otherwise bought the whole package.

Hehe thread after thread this idiot argues himself into a hole he can't get out of.
