Team Fortress 2 Beta Live

The promised Team Fortress 2 beta went live overnight on Steam, presumably before midnight Pacific time to fulfill the promised September 17 release. The beta is open to those who have pre-purchased the Orange Box Half-Life 2 bundle.

Undocumented Alien, all valve games use hl2.exe, and they all run from a different folder, which is probably why your firewalls want to re-auth them seperately.

I use Zone Alarm and it will usually tell me when a program wants access to the internet etc, but this doesn't seem to be the case for TF2, it loads to a point then crashes. I get past the 'first' splash screen (with the medic as focal point) then it crashes at the second splash screen.

I'm hoping the launch options will help, or just the new download...

DAM I want to try this out!!!

Hardly.

The graphics do make the world look more fun and I really like the little touches they have added. Instead of another flat wall, there is an area of computers or a closed office or...

And the removal of grenades (for the most part) makes this an entirely different beast. You are forced to work together, it scales back the spamming, and slows down the pace of the game a tad. Further, the changes to the classes make this much more fun, unique, and, in my opinion, increases the strategy aspect.

The heavy is truly lethal now, medics are much more useful, scouts can really confuse the opposing classes now, the pyro is more useful, there is less of a focus of camping snipers, the demoman is no longer an "I win" button, spies have some neat tricks and can create more havoc, etc.

I would like to see them make a tweak here or there (heavy + medic = super strong, scouts are killing a tad too much, pyro could use a minimal health or damage tweak, spies need to bleed when shot, etc.,) but it is one hell of a game.

I love TFC, but for me, this fixed the things that always bugged me. I rarely, rarely play deathmatch games these days (I've been killing random players for years, it takes something unique to appeal to me) and this will definitely drag me back.
I think most whiners are those that want quick, easy games.
Having experienced two crashes thus far,
Ray

Seems a lot of people online are saying to try this Launch Option for TF2:

"+windowed -width 1024 -height 768"

then once in game you can change to full screen and set the correct resolution.

That's Beta I guess

After a long wait (killed time with the Crysis beta) the game unlocked at 11:55pm last night, sadly the game wouldn't load for anyone until there was another update around 12:45am. I played until around 2am, and wow is it ever awesome.

Controls and movement are very tight. I expect this from a Source game, but even when compared to Fortress Forever (animations and movement seem very rigid), TF2 movement is just perfect.

Animations are all amazing. Love the taunts. Gibs...oh lots ketchup splattering gibs! I just wish it had unlocked earlier as I just want this day of work to be over so I can go kick some more ass.

Dr Evil's comments are the first negative I've heard about this game. Everyone playing last night was loving it.

Quick note: Crysis MP has been turned into a Battlefield clone. This isnt a bad thing, just surprising. But it was fun to play, however nowhere near as tight as TF2.

Yeah, it could just be a simple firewall issue.

In my experience, all the recently-activated Steam games end up downloading a bit more data, verify content, and you will need to approve the new game's .exe for internet access. Additionally, if Steam or the downloaded/updated get revised, you may need to re-approve those.
I know ZoneAlarm has a "Game Mode" for things like this.
Otherwise, all the Valve games take a good chunk of time to start up the very first time - often, it may seem like your computer has completely stalled.

Thinking that heavy + medic combo is crazy,
Ray

So I deleetd my local content and am now re-downloading it... grrr.

I saw some posts of people having to "verify content" even though the game said it was ready to go - give that a whirl before you try and fire it up again (after re-loading of course).

So...

I could never get past the TF2 second loading splash screen so I found that you can add launch options, I added -windowed to the launch options so I could what the heck was going on and it seems that I was getting a 'hl2.exe' crash (why hl2.exe crash launching TF2?!?!?) in the background, but of course since the TF2 loading screen locked me out of the desktop I couldn't see it but I did finally see the hangup in windowed mode.

So I deleetd my local content and am now re-downloading it... grrr.

TF2 is the Fisher Price version of TF for people that have played TF for years.

I was looking forward to TF2 alot. I thought, that's cool removing grenades could be a very good move given the spammy nature of TF. I also am not at all a fan of bunny hopping and all the other movement tricks that have been a big part of TF since the beginning. I love the art direction they were taking.

They crippled it way too much though. I've played TF throughout many years for one high level reason. It's a fast paced game that can get your heart rate up. TF2 is an abomination in that regard. Pretty graphics on top of shallow gameplay. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, seems gaming in general is going that direction.

They have 'consolized' Team Fortress, and you guys are eating it up. Nothing wrong with that. To each his own, my only beef is that it shares a name with a history that it ultimately has very little in common with. The pacing is mind numbingly slow, on top of the shitty respawn timers. That whole tense action that I've always loved TF for is gone. You know, similar reasons why for example many people hated Quake 4 coming from Quake 3. When you are used to something in a series, and you have grown to love it based on that, and the next revision ass rapes it, it's common sense you probably aren't going to be a fan.

To each their own. Glad you are enjoying it. There will probably be enough of a community left over for FF to coexist, so hopefully we can all come out winners.

Load times are painfully long. As far as I can see, there is no menu driven bots like in UT or ETQW. I've not tried starting my own server and doing bots that way. With the developer commentary turned on, one of them talks about the maps. I think he said 12.

The Character models look really good. The sound skips allover the place on my system for some reason, much like it did when Valve introduced that bug not long after the release of HL2. The maps themselves have some cool light/shadow features.

heheheh yeah, noticed that on server join.....very long - thought my game froze a few times.

Is the game deeper than the original TF (the original TF was not TFC, it was Quakeworld TF back into 1996). Or is it more shallow cause in 2007 I expect deeper gameplay than when I got in 1996. I haven't preordered so I'm interested in how long a game like this could hold my interest.

No there aren't bots for TF2, nor for other valve engine games due to the crippled server plugin implementation that I filed a bug for improvement years ago about. On the upside, they are 'planning' to actually implement the changes after orange box ships, so if they do we may see a revival of 3rd party bots for existing games/mods.

You can build very basic bots with the current plugin system, which is where some of the zombie mod server plugins do their shit.

If you want more info here is the bug I filed years ago:

This is my #1 question, so I'll repeat it:

BOTS?
I'd like to hone my skills against bots before exposing my all-too-fragile self to getting ass-raped by 15-year-olds online, so I'm interesting in bots too. Have there been any bots modded into any of the multiplayer Source engine games to date (CS:S, DoD:S, HL2DM, etc.)?

Anyone know how many maps are going to be included in TF2? I hope they don't release 4 again like with DoD:S, what a let down that was.

There are 6 in my file system, and I played 2.......I am sure more will come.

BOTS? Dunno, didn't care, I was having too much fun until the lady came down and pointed at her watch. hehehehehe
