Team Fortress 2 Beta Live

The promised Team Fortress 2 beta went live overnight on Steam, presumably before midnight Pacific time to fulfill the promised September 17 release. The beta is open to those who have pre-purchased the Orange Box Half-Life 2 bundle.

I despise wireless.

I won't go as far as despise, but I'd rather go with wired for all of my solutions.

I'll use it for my laptop occasion when I work (or browse) in the living room.

Beyond that, I regretfully say both my 360 and Wii are wireless. I checked it out, and it's kind of a pain to run them to the living room and I'm a little lazy. Plus the Wii doesn't come with a network jack standard.

Then again, I don't play my 360 or Wii online. I just use it to mainly download demos/games/etc.

The good news is I told my wife I'd buy her a manicure/pedicure/spa package if she'd let me re-arrange some things in the apartment and she agreed.

Nice.

Not a bad idea, though I do constantly switch between channels 1, 6, and 11 - and it never makes a big difference.

You need to get an app, that either comes with your wireless card or find one online, that shows you what channel you neighbors are using, if they are. If you and your neighbors are broadcasting on the same channel, it could cause problems...
This is true. I had to change my wireless router's channel a few times before it would work with my wife's laptop (we're in an apartment surrounded by other residents' routers).

But I doubt that would only cause problems with games. If you're having channel problems, it should affect all network use - not just games. When I had channel conflicts, I couldn't even surf the web.

Also, I would never talk to these neighbors.

Wired isn't much of an option for me. We're in an apartment, we have 2 computers and only 1 cablemode/router location which isn't by either computer.

Moving my computer to the wall where the coax outlet is isn't an option because my wife would kill me.

Running a cable under the carpet is... not only a pain in the ass, but then we have lumpy carpet (again, wife would kill me).
What about running the cable across the ceiling?

Seriously though, you could always try powerline networking. I haven't kept up with it, but apparently it's made some performance improvements over the years.

To nin: It is all games, but I've been playing WoW for the past 1.5 years so it was far less noticable due to WoW being an MMO and not an FPS. Also, I would never talk to these neighbors.

Thanks for the answers on the wireless situation.

Was really looking for some wireless tweaks but I have posted on some tech forums so may find help there. Thx, all! (=

And what do you think happened, let's take a poll. Why does >U/Riley/Anonymous Monolith employee hate Valve so much? Is it:
a)He was fired from Valve for being "too difficult" to work with.
b)Gabe stole his girlfriend in high school.
c)Robin Walker ran over his dog.
d)While shopping in Kirkland one Christmas, Gabe stole his parking spot and then grabbed the last Tickle Me Elmo for his kid.
I think you nailed it with the last one, though the Tickle Me Elmo was for him.

Given the fact that you made rash criticisms of TF2 earlier in this thread only to now retract them, you are certainly not a reliable or accurate judge of anyone else's sense or judgement.

I clearly admitted that my first impression was heavily against the heavy reduction in game speed. I've been playing Fortress Forever for years now as part of the dev team and now released, and when you are a long time TF'er from way back that is used to the speed that is typically a part of TF it can be jarring at first to play a version that is significantly slower, not only in overall movement speed, but in the removal of conc jumping, respawn timers, etc. After playing it more, you know, to give it a fair chance(something you probably never heard of), I've found that it is growing on me.

Besides, my preference for games or change of attitude towards TF2 has no bearing on how blatantly obvious you make your stupidity to everyone on these boards. You are the Jack Thompson of blues news.

I'm reasonably certain you aren't a developer, and if you are, you're an extremely retarded one. Your arguments long ago about pack files clearly shows a level of ignorance I haven't yet seen from actual real developers.

So, its demo is still a relevant marketing tool for the full game

Not when the demo is being played more than the full game. Then it's clearly giving people too much and therefore no incentive to purchase.

Or maybe Gabe walked out of Kirkland with the last Tickle Me Elmo, and with Riley's girlfriend on his arm. Then as he pulled out of Riley's parking spot, he ran over Riley's dog.

Holy fucking shit, thanks UA. I've been banging my head on this all night and have already re-downloaded the game but had no luck. It's finally coming up again after adding those flags. Hopefully it stays running now so I can actually try the game. Thanks!

Riley lacks the sense to work at a game developer, even as a receptionist.

I disagree, with the level of detail he puts in bashing Valve and how no matter what they do, they are the "evil empire", he really comes across as a competitor with sour grapes.

Yes, that Monolith thread is pretty revealing. Who would have guessed it was them? So do you think he's a developer or an executive? Is it Monolith's policy to continuously bash their competitors anonymously on trade websites?

You really like your little "gamette" term, don't you? I bet you think you're so smart for coming up with it (I can see you now, giggling like a schoolgirl as you type it from your computer in your parents' basement).
Keep your erotic fantasies to yourself. You're the one beating yourself off over it, not me. Besides if you like giggling schoolgirls, talk to Dacock. I'm sure he'll do you if you whisper sweet nothings about Valve in his ear. Ask theyarecummingforyou too, and you can have a threesome.

Look at the gamespy stats - some games (like Halo) have their demo still tearing up the charts long after the game disappears.
Halo for the PC is still sold at retail. So, its demo is still a relevant marketing tool for the full game. Plus there's nothing wrong with giving consumers a free taste of a game they can play indefinitely. Sure game development is a business, but it doesn't have to totally be about maximizing profit.

That was going to be my advice too. Honestly, if people weren't so obsessed with wireless, my troubleshooting at work would be cut by about half. But no - their neighbor has it, their fried has it, and their son has it, so they have to have it too.

My house was built in 1900.
I rewired the whole place with CAT5E.
Nothing works better than wired.
Period.
I had wireless (and still do) for the laptop while I am eating breakfast or reading the paper in the am....but I get tired of running downstairs to reboot the router and wireless crap all the time. So I am going to do another run and plug it in under my breakfast bar for easy access.

I despise wireless.
