Red Alert: A Path Beyond

The Red Alert: A Path Beyond Website offers downloads of the beta client and server for this fan-created freeware game based on Command & Conquer: Renegade, the first-person shooter set in the C&C universe (thanks EvilTimmy). Here's word on the project from the FAQ:
Red alert: A Path Beyond is a first-person shooter based upon Command and Conquer: Red alert. You all remember Westwood, right? So do we. We've been in development for the past three years, and finally we have something to show the general public for it. How neat is that? It's been a year since we announced the changes for the Summer 2007 version of the project, which is being called "Red alert: A Path Beyond: Beta."

We started out as a mod for C&C Renegade, an old game that was very underappreciated by critics and customers alike. Multiplayer was sort of like Battlefield, except that this actually came out before Battlefield and doesn't have really bad bugs and bad netcode. It was fun, but it was a flawed game that had a lot of weird, not-Command-and-Conquer design decisions thanks to it being rushed out the door, such as a plethora of new characters, and the fact that it took about a million bullets to kill someone. We decided to take the basic formula of Renegade and polish the gameplay and graphics (as well as base it on a better title of theirs) so that we could have something that would be what Westwood would have put out if they had more time. We believe we've succeeded. Hopefully you will too.

Wasnt renegade one of the dodgiest, and most ridculously buggy games of all time? I remember one particular bug, where I was able to zoom in infinitely, and zoom backwards into my own head, until the entire game world became one tiny dot in the middle of the screen. Trippy stuff.

I love when you purchase a lifetime subscription, and a month later the company is bought out and the new owner tells you you have to purchase a new lifetime subscription for the same product.

a vast majority of "lifetime" anything is somewhat of a scam, and when you purchase something like that there is always a clause that says if the company goes under, or changes ownership, or blah blah blah, then the "lifetime" offer is null and void

Most of the "lifetime" offers on products I've seen are the "lifetime of the product" type "lifetime" offers. By making it "lifetime of the product" I guess they protect themselves from law suits, since the product lifetime is then what they decide it is rather than "lifetime" as in "the buyers lifetime."

Edited to add that I just love it when you read a Lifetime Warranty* on a label, go to read the * and find that it says in really small print something like "5 years" or something similar.

agreed Bucky, ASE was a great program. Unfortunately Yahoo (who bought it) just abandon the thing after it purchased it.

FWIW I don't think the user base would've tolerated any advertising.

I got burned by both Gamespy 3D and The All-Seeing Eye. Both were great programs that sold out and turned to shit....right after I purchased each.

Now I'm forced to use in-game server browsers, which suck compared to those old and out-dated programs.

I'm personally hoping that Xfire puts more work into their server browser, but I'm not holding my breath.

if you're talking about Gamespy 3D (I think thats the name) you can still download it and theres still limited support for it:

its a marketing tool, because "lifetime" offers sound like such an appealing value... thats the point, to get you to buy

most of the commercial market isnt looking out for your best interests, all they want is your money

I don't blame them for selling either...but selling out their clients?? I paid good money for a program with lifetime updates, as soon as they sold they took my money and ran, nothing to show for it anymore...maybe I should start watching my back, I guess my lifetime is up?

/slightly overdramatic
//gets my point across

Does the original or this version offer cooperative multiplayer? Co-op games are such a rare breed, I am always on the lookout a decent game to play with a friend.

Just after quakespy, the setup was amazing, buy gamespy, free updates for life, support for everything.
Then what happened? IGN? Changed the licensing, no more free updates, and for those of us who paid for it for either free updates still, or a full year of the new setup (was that arcade? I think), then they deep sixed the gamespy app completely, so I've got a lifetime updates of...nothing.

I tried it, the control feels extremely clumsy. And I'm not about to install GameSpy for anything.

Renegade multiplayer was a hell of a lot of fun. It still bums me out they canceled Renegade 2.

EDIT: I didn't notice at first but this is a free standalone game, you don't even need the original Renegade to play it.
