Gold - Tabula Rasa

NCsoft announces Tabula Rasa, or rather Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa, is gold, and the science fiction MMORPG will offer its namesake clean slate on October 16 for preorder customers, and October 19 for everyone else:
NCsoft Announces Launch Date for Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa

Gaming legend's widely anticipated online space adventure to launch October 19th

Thursday 6th September/...NCsoft® Europe, the world’s leading developer and publisher of online computer games, announced today that Richard Garriott’s Tabula Rasa® has reached gold master status and will launch commercial service in Europe and North America on October 19, 2007. Pre-order customers will begin their three-day head start on October 16.

One of the most anticipated PC games of the year, Tabula Rasa is gaming legend Richard Garriott’s newest title, which combines a vast, persistent game world and rich storyline with fast paced action. Set in a near-future science fiction storyline, players create characters that must fight to save humanity against hostile alien enemies while trying to gain control of the universe. The game introduces several innovative elements to massively multiplayer online (MMO) games, including a Character Cloning System™ that allows players to explore different character classes without having to create a new character, and dynamic battlefields where players experience the frenetic action of combat in an ongoing war.

“It has been a heck of a journey,” said Richard Garriott, the game’s Executive Producer. “The fact that we are getting ready for the final stretch towards launch feels great, but it is also just the beginning. I think we’ve managed to do something truly unique and I hope that the gaming community likes it as much as we do. Now, I am looking forward to a really fun ‘end of beta event’ for our incredible testers, and focusing development on new planets and innovations for future expansions of Tabula Rasa.”

The standard edition box of Richard Garriott’s Tabula Rasa will be available at major retailers at an expected retail price of £29.99 / €44.99 and at the PlayNC® store (https://secure.plaync.com/cgi-bin/Store.pl?language=en-gb). Customers will be able to purchase the recently announced Limited Collector’s Edition box from major retailers at an expected retail price of £49.99 / €69.99. Both products include the first month of online game play. After the first month, players will be charged a monthly subscription fee of £8.99 / €12.99. The game is rated 16+ by PEGI (www.pegi.info).

Edit: I don't see this posted on NCSoft's site yet. Perhaps they're just slow?

I'd love to try this game, but last time I tried to sign up on palyNCs website for a ga,me, it just kept telling me I was typing my password wrong. eventually I gave up. I bet thousands of people have the same issue, and they wont respond to tech support emails about it. dickheads.

There's a reason the NDA is still in place on this game.... I look forward to it being lifted.

Seriously, I thought people would learn from Vanguard - give it another 6 months and this could be a must buy, but not yet ...

As most have said...it's way too early in development to say.

Potential? Sure! But not there yet.
And not before October 16th.

The game is a lot more polished that 90% of the MMO's that go to reproduction.

Even the early beta was a lot of fun and it didn't have many of the more advanced stuff like crafting implemented. The game ran very smooth, no major server crashes, I never lost my loot etc.

Yes. I had a lot more fun in the early beta than what the game has now become.

The NDA no longer pops up when you launch the game, still no official word it's gone though.

it's not bad but ..you'd think a game set in the future would have vehicles ..I'm not even asking for mechs or battlecruisers ...ANYTHING would have been acceptable ..even a freaking hoverboard ..really it spoils the setting ...especially since there so much land to traverse ..just cant shake the feeling while running that in the future their must be a form of transportation that's better than just your legs

There is...it's called teleportation. From my time in the military I don't recall getting a personal motorcycle to drive around.

Nice.. there's rumors on the forums that it's gone also. So.. without further ado.

This game sucks. Let me add a bit more though. I've been in the beta for a long while now. When I originally started, the game was pure joy. The action was quick like CoH, and it was very fun. Through a series of nerfs, however, and "tweaks", most of the fun is gone. I hate this game now.

But that's not what pisses me off and makes me badmouth it to friends. No, the reason for that goes to Richard Garriott. Every QA I read, every video I watch on TR is nothing but hype. RG has said for _years_ now that the MMO genre is stale and boring, and that TR is going to change all that. Tabula Rasa is just like every other MMO out there. The bases that you were supposed to be able to take control of don't work (the bases exist, but you can't capture or lose them). The logos system is complete and utter crap. The classes have a limited number of abilities, and a lot of them are useless. If it's not a shotgun or a pistol, it's useless.

So what makes this different than other MMOs? Hmm.. well.. hold on sec, I'll think of something. Oh, yeah, it's in a futuristic forest. And.. uh.. golly gee, that's it. How do you want your missions? Gather? Kill? Explore? Nothing new there. What about "getting around"? Got any neato ships to fly? Nope.. fast legs is what you get. Any laser beams? Uh.. nope. Laser guns, but no frickin' beams on 'em.

The logos system looked cool on paper, but it fails. To cast heal on someone, you need the Ally and Heal logos. Makes sense. But you also need to be a specialist, so just having those doesn't make them work. There's really no reason to even bother with the Logos aside from getting the bare minimum to make your logos work. Lightning used to be handy. They did more than nerfed it. They raped it in the ass and laughed at it.

I can't explain how much I hate this game and the pile of shit it is. In early beta, it was so god damn fun. And now it's not even a complete MMO. No mail system, no auction house. When asked what you could do besides fight, Cuppa said there's the chat system and taverns. OMG! Stop me now. I get to chat! As someone on the forums said, 6.5 years later and THAT is what they have?? Give me a fucking break.

Anyway.. pass on this game. It's a Vanguard.

Yea it's pretty solid and runs good (sans a current big problem with nvidia 7series cards and their specular lighting system, but that'll be fixed weeks before release.)

As to the gameplay in general. I'll save my review for after the NDA is officially lifted.

The game engine is almost IDENTICAL to the one in Auto Assault while in the cities. That is not a good thing.

It is possibly the worst game engine I have ever seen. The physics are non existant, the models are blocky, the textures are bland, the sound is lacking, the animations are a joke, the UI is plain ugly.

I hated this game and will NOT be buying it. It is not a Vanguard it is an Auto Assault. They just closed down the other night BTW.

Pass on this game. It is not worth the time to install it.

I'll concur that months ago the game was good light fun. It's amazing that it's gone from a cool action RPG to an incomplete poor attempt at a standard MMORPG.

Let me add on to what Frijoles said...

When I started in beta several months ago, the game was really run-and-gun. Felt more like a third-person action shooter than a MMO. Combat was fast, levelling was fast, and even if 2/3 of the game was broken or not implemented yet it was still a lot of fun.

Then somewhere along the line they started slowing everything down. XP gains got a huge nerf that they only partially removed. All weapon damage got nerfed hard. Bad enough on the DPS classes but if you playing one of the support classes? Grind grind grind grind supergrind. Logos effects, as Frijoles said, got slammed by the nerf bat too.

Whereas the game used to be fast and fun, now it's slow and plodding. Stopped playing the beta back at the beginning of August when it became clear that this was the way the devs wanted the game to be, and that release was coming up a lot quicker than anyone would admit to. Lo and behold, there's the October release announcement.

TRY BEFORE BUY, FOLKS. Do a demo or free trial first. The game may still be up your alley, but it certainly isn't up mine.
