Gold - Tabula Rasa

NCsoft announces Tabula Rasa, or rather Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa, is gold, and the science fiction MMORPG will offer its namesake clean slate on October 16 for preorder customers, and October 19 for everyone else:
NCsoft Announces Launch Date for Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa

Gaming legend's widely anticipated online space adventure to launch October 19th

Thursday 6th September/...NCsoft® Europe, the world’s leading developer and publisher of online computer games, announced today that Richard Garriott’s Tabula Rasa® has reached gold master status and will launch commercial service in Europe and North America on October 19, 2007. Pre-order customers will begin their three-day head start on October 16.

One of the most anticipated PC games of the year, Tabula Rasa is gaming legend Richard Garriott’s newest title, which combines a vast, persistent game world and rich storyline with fast paced action. Set in a near-future science fiction storyline, players create characters that must fight to save humanity against hostile alien enemies while trying to gain control of the universe. The game introduces several innovative elements to massively multiplayer online (MMO) games, including a Character Cloning System™ that allows players to explore different character classes without having to create a new character, and dynamic battlefields where players experience the frenetic action of combat in an ongoing war.

“It has been a heck of a journey,” said Richard Garriott, the game’s Executive Producer. “The fact that we are getting ready for the final stretch towards launch feels great, but it is also just the beginning. I think we’ve managed to do something truly unique and I hope that the gaming community likes it as much as we do. Now, I am looking forward to a really fun ‘end of beta event’ for our incredible testers, and focusing development on new planets and innovations for future expansions of Tabula Rasa.”

The standard edition box of Richard Garriott’s Tabula Rasa will be available at major retailers at an expected retail price of £29.99 / €44.99 and at the PlayNC® store (https://secure.plaync.com/cgi-bin/Store.pl?language=en-gb). Customers will be able to purchase the recently announced Limited Collector’s Edition box from major retailers at an expected retail price of £49.99 / €69.99. Both products include the first month of online game play. After the first month, players will be charged a monthly subscription fee of £8.99 / €12.99. The game is rated 16+ by PEGI (www.pegi.info).

They didn't even have an open beta. That speaks volumes about how they don't want the masses to know how bad their game is. Pass.

If you actually enjoy current MMORPGs then I can see why you would enjoy the current state of Rasa, it's like a slightly faster paced standard MMORPG. To me the current style of MMORPGs suck ass. Each patch bring the game more and more inline with the rest of them.

It feels nothing like PS, jesus you must be fucking terrible at shooters if this is how you play them.

Here's somehting from the recent patch notes that tell me the devs just don't get how to make it feel like everyone on one big team:

AE Buffs will only affect squad members now, not nearby friendlies.

Once again making this like all the others.

The game should be ready by the release date, I dunno why people are screaming about it.

It's a fun game, I've been in the beta for 4-5 weeks. Each patch improves and fixes bugs. It feels more like a 3rd PS, but it really is an MMO.

I'll be buying and subscribing, I could care less if these whiners don't play.

Yea the current swimming animation is just a bug. Theres been a swimming animation as long as I've been in beta, and that's since early summer.

IMHO TR isn't a 'bad' game. The combat itself is killer and quite fun. Trouble is, thats all the game has to it. Theres nothing else, just shallow combat. It's a fine game, but a poor MMOG.

I have other problems with the game. Such as the main enemy, the Bane, being easy as pie to kill generally. This one race that has been wiping out people on countless planets and has been devastating the galaxy for millenia, and you can basically take about 10 of them down in a matter of 2-3 seconds. The only way I can see this back-story being anything but a complete joke, is if these Bane can somehow self-replicate every 30 seconds, and there are just 100 trillion more of them in the galaxy then any other race.

But yea, in terms of strait gameplay. It's really fun, but incredibly shallow. I can see the game selling very well, but after that first free month, a LOT of people leaving. Sucks cause I don't like to see any MMOG fail. Not that this will, it'll be reasonably successful. But not massively appealing.

An example would be like City of Heroes/Villains. That MMOG was rather shallow when it came out. Still is in some respects (though things like the Invention system have helped a lot.) This game is like 10 times more shallow then CoH was at release. Seriously.. I don't think I have ever played a more shallow online game. Even Counter-Strike is less shallow.

Well so far everyone has pretty much bashed the game. Ill be one who will say the game was, and still is, fun.

Im not real sure what it is everyone was expecting that caused them to hate TR so much. Its not a bad game. Its just nothing truly outstanding either.

Its a fresh take on a sci-fi MMO though, thats for sure.

To correct some things mentioned below: there are swimming animations (holster your weapon) - you *can* capture bases and the baddies *can* take them back, Ive seen it happen (its just rare right now due to the large amount of players at nearly ever base) - we've already been told vehicles of some sort will be headed to the game post-release.

Anyway - if you are curious about it - try it. I say never listen to the critics. Decide for yourself. In a time where everyone is ready to ruthlessly jump on anything for the slightest infraction - you have to see it for yourself to make a wise decision.

Sempai - the build we have in the beta is "old" and I don't think they ever actually released that big content patch/bug fix patch they promised either. Which included swimming animations

As such, the dev builds and retail build I'm sure are much better than the current beta build we are playing. As for the game itself, its fun for sure. Certainly better than say Planetside. The quests are fun for the most part, and while the combat is fairly good once past level 15 or so, up until that point it can get a bit "old" if you don't give it a chance.

Looking forward to the release on the 19th though. I can't wait to review the game

I Just got into beta last week, i was hoping this was going to replace AO for a good sci-fi mmorpg but sadly it isnt even close to the depth of that game.

Also if this has gone gold people will be paying to beta test it. Lots of unfinished stuff, hell they dont even have swimming animations in yet, you just stand in the water.

Its sad to see this shit still going on and people like Richard Garriot being the same type of moron that every other dev is out there, releasing unfinished games to the public then promising fixes and content after the fact.

Lets screw our customer! yah!

Blizzard set the bar on mmorpgs and this game just doesnt come close.

Whereas the game used to be fast and fun, now it's slow and plodding. Stopped playing the beta back at the beginning of August when it became clear that this was the way the devs wanted the game to be

Then you've missed out on the fact that xp gains have been increased back to nearly what they were before. Everyone and their brother knew the xp nerf was the wrong thing to do.

This is definitely a 'run and gun' type of game. I personally have been beta-testing since late spring and there have certainly been times where I just didn't want to log on anymore. But I figured I signed on for beta, I better beta-test the game.

It has improved since the above quoted posters time playing. But I probably won't be buying the game. Not for the above reasons, but because there is no depth and the combat, while great, is all there is to the game. Like Planetside, it's major fun for a while, but it's hard to justify paying a monthly fee for.

Another thing that was good was that anybody contributing to kill a mob got full xp and loot. You didn't have to group up in the open areas for people to work as a team. There was no fighting over spawns since everyone could jump in and gte credit. They decided that was too much fun and went with a traditional XP system and the game changed from everyone working together to the classic bunch of individuals fighting over mobs.

I'm hoping there's some sort of miracle patch between now and release. The run-and-gun pre-July build was a lot of fun. My main was a bio specialist, so yeah.. that char was shelved (and now delete from what it sounds like).

Pre-July, I believe all the different classes could really enjoy the game and kill stuff. The patches have forced certain classes in to support roles though, so they just aren't fun anymore. There's nothing next-gen about this MMO. It's barely current-gen, since it's lacking so many basic things. *cough* crafting *cough* (it has crafting, but it's shallow and empty, like the rest of the game).

Holy crap aparantly Auto assault subscribers get Rasa for free. I signed up a couple of months ago just to try it out and didn't play for more than that month. They just sent me an email saying because I recently played it I get Tabula Rsa for free. Same with CoH.

That's pretty freaking cool....even if Rasa is going to suck.

Let me add on to what Frijoles said...

When I started in beta several months ago, the game was really run-and-gun. Felt more like a third-person action shooter than a MMO. Combat was fast, levelling was fast, and even if 2/3 of the game was broken or not implemented yet it was still a lot of fun.

Then somewhere along the line they started slowing everything down. XP gains got a huge nerf that they only partially removed. All weapon damage got nerfed hard. Bad enough on the DPS classes but if you playing one of the support classes? Grind grind grind grind supergrind. Logos effects, as Frijoles said, got slammed by the nerf bat too.

Whereas the game used to be fast and fun, now it's slow and plodding. Stopped playing the beta back at the beginning of August when it became clear that this was the way the devs wanted the game to be, and that release was coming up a lot quicker than anyone would admit to. Lo and behold, there's the October release announcement.

TRY BEFORE BUY, FOLKS. Do a demo or free trial first. The game may still be up your alley, but it certainly isn't up mine.

I'll concur that months ago the game was good light fun. It's amazing that it's gone from a cool action RPG to an incomplete poor attempt at a standard MMORPG.

The game engine is almost IDENTICAL to the one in Auto Assault while in the cities. That is not a good thing.

It is possibly the worst game engine I have ever seen. The physics are non existant, the models are blocky, the textures are bland, the sound is lacking, the animations are a joke, the UI is plain ugly.

I hated this game and will NOT be buying it. It is not a Vanguard it is an Auto Assault. They just closed down the other night BTW.

Pass on this game. It is not worth the time to install it.

Yea it's pretty solid and runs good (sans a current big problem with nvidia 7series cards and their specular lighting system, but that'll be fixed weeks before release.)

As to the gameplay in general. I'll save my review for after the NDA is officially lifted.

he NDA no longer pops up when you launch the game, still no official word it's gone though

Nice.. there's rumors on the forums that it's gone also. So.. without further ado.

This game sucks. Let me add a bit more though. I've been in the beta for a long while now. When I originally started, the game was pure joy. The action was quick like CoH, and it was very fun. Through a series of nerfs, however, and "tweaks", most of the fun is gone. I hate this game now.

But that's not what pisses me off and makes me badmouth it to friends. No, the reason for that goes to Richard Garriott. Every QA I read, every video I watch on TR is nothing but hype. RG has said for _years_ now that the MMO genre is stale and boring, and that TR is going to change all that. Tabula Rasa is just like every other MMO out there. The bases that you were supposed to be able to take control of don't work (the bases exist, but you can't capture or lose them). The logos system is complete and utter crap. The classes have a limited number of abilities, and a lot of them are useless. If it's not a shotgun or a pistol, it's useless.

So what makes this different than other MMOs? Hmm.. well.. hold on sec, I'll think of something. Oh, yeah, it's in a futuristic forest. And.. uh.. golly gee, that's it. How do you want your missions? Gather? Kill? Explore? Nothing new there. What about "getting around"? Got any neato ships to fly? Nope.. fast legs is what you get. Any laser beams? Uh.. nope. Laser guns, but no frickin' beams on 'em.

The logos system looked cool on paper, but it fails. To cast heal on someone, you need the Ally and Heal logos. Makes sense. But you also need to be a specialist, so just having those doesn't make them work. There's really no reason to even bother with the Logos aside from getting the bare minimum to make your logos work. Lightning used to be handy. They did more than nerfed it. They raped it in the ass and laughed at it.

I can't explain how much I hate this game and the pile of shit it is. In early beta, it was so god damn fun. And now it's not even a complete MMO. No mail system, no auction house. When asked what you could do besides fight, Cuppa said there's the chat system and taverns. OMG! Stop me now. I get to chat! As someone on the forums said, 6.5 years later and THAT is what they have?? Give me a fucking break.

Anyway.. pass on this game. It's a Vanguard.
