Gold - Tabula Rasa

NCsoft announces Tabula Rasa, or rather Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa, is gold, and the science fiction MMORPG will offer its namesake clean slate on October 16 for preorder customers, and October 19 for everyone else:
NCsoft Announces Launch Date for Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa

Gaming legend's widely anticipated online space adventure to launch October 19th

Thursday 6th September/...NCsoft® Europe, the world’s leading developer and publisher of online computer games, announced today that Richard Garriott’s Tabula Rasa® has reached gold master status and will launch commercial service in Europe and North America on October 19, 2007. Pre-order customers will begin their three-day head start on October 16.

One of the most anticipated PC games of the year, Tabula Rasa is gaming legend Richard Garriott’s newest title, which combines a vast, persistent game world and rich storyline with fast paced action. Set in a near-future science fiction storyline, players create characters that must fight to save humanity against hostile alien enemies while trying to gain control of the universe. The game introduces several innovative elements to massively multiplayer online (MMO) games, including a Character Cloning System™ that allows players to explore different character classes without having to create a new character, and dynamic battlefields where players experience the frenetic action of combat in an ongoing war.

“It has been a heck of a journey,” said Richard Garriott, the game’s Executive Producer. “The fact that we are getting ready for the final stretch towards launch feels great, but it is also just the beginning. I think we’ve managed to do something truly unique and I hope that the gaming community likes it as much as we do. Now, I am looking forward to a really fun ‘end of beta event’ for our incredible testers, and focusing development on new planets and innovations for future expansions of Tabula Rasa.”

The standard edition box of Richard Garriott’s Tabula Rasa will be available at major retailers at an expected retail price of £29.99 / €44.99 and at the PlayNC® store (https://secure.plaync.com/cgi-bin/Store.pl?language=en-gb). Customers will be able to purchase the recently announced Limited Collector’s Edition box from major retailers at an expected retail price of £49.99 / €69.99. Both products include the first month of online game play. After the first month, players will be charged a monthly subscription fee of £8.99 / €12.99. The game is rated 16+ by PEGI (www.pegi.info).

As of the latest patch explosions still can knock you thru items to get stuck in objects, ground, etc forcing a /stuck tleport back to your last gate. And Squad voice, when it works, worked better in GW.

I think TR will be slightly more successful than Auto Assault. This one has a chance to survive (thanks to hype) to its first expansion pack.

As for what RG said about MMOs and then claimed about Tabula Rasa? What about what he said about U9 and playability? About UO on launch (remember the whole uber magic spells and the other balance wrecking exploits that publicly made it from Beta? Or even about the US port of Lineage II and how it compared to existing MMOs? Not exactly a stellar track record for games, great record for marketing and his finances.

indeed the code is stable if not polished. but the lack of gameplay substance is frighteningly lacking considering TR is a Lord British endorsed product.

I'd actually settle for the original TR. Bring back the unicorns, fancy robes and light-swords please. Then at least postmortem reports would have more than one line to write.

The game itself is rather bug-free, beyond quests that don't work,

And the universe implodes...

It's actually rather bug-free, though shadows don't like my ATI 2900 card, and there's no word from the developers that they'll fix it.. but surely that is minor

The game itself is rather bug-free, beyond quests that don't work, but I imagine the quest implementors are just very busy right now..

TR was indeed fun in June or so, when XP was easy and the DFG killed everything in one hit.

But the razor-thin content can't sustain any sort of real effort, and having to actually spend some time killing things (clicking over and over) ruins it for me. You can often just run past every encounter and live (at least as a sapper), but.. why bother.

TR might be a fun single-player game as-is, for say $30, and at the end you'd kill Big Bad Mr. Bane, but as an MMORPG it just doesn't work. Maybe if you can buy the game and 'beat' it in your first month..

I'd be shocked if TR survives for long, but I've been shocked before. Who knows. I will note that I'm not an MMORPG fan in general, so the fact that TR amused me for 40 hours or so is nice in that respect..

I kinda like it after an hour play - but I am kinda scared it's really gonna attract an awfull lot of teenagers.

Also slightly confused why the npcs say "get your *** over here" but their voiceover says "get your ass over here".

Guild Wars in space without the instancing.

I could tolerate the action-ish MMOG, I could accept the rehashed gfx engine, the senseless fed-ex missions, the traveling on foot, but what I totally couldn't accept was the lack of gameplay and story depth. Whats worse... the problem was voiced out long ago, but nothing done.

The alien benefactor name spelled backwards is 'HOLE' should have been ample warning...

I personally want to still believe that TR has potential, but in its present condition it would just turn more potential customers away. Give it another 6 months to a year.

Opinions have nothing to do with anything, this game is flat-out not ready for release.

They've been making drastic changes instead of finalization. The end-game isn't in existence. It's extremely buggy. It's extremely unbalanced. Devs do *not* listen to player base.

It's in a sad state.

WTF? This is like troll central or something?

You must be new to Blues... oh, I see.. you are.

Try the beta, if you like it great, if not, oh well.

Agree.

I am having fun in it, if your not find something else to do.

I agree with you here also. The reason I have been posting is that people want to know if the game is worth buying. I say no, not like it is. You say yes. Great. I'm not going to call you any names though. You have your reasons, I have mine. Anyone else can decide on their own.

Anyone on the fence should spend the $5 and try it out, or wait for a free trial. I really think anyone who buys this game will get a good month of enjoyment from it, but then they'll be left wondering what to do next. There's nothing in TR to make anyone stick around long-term.

I like how you lump people who have poor opinions of the game all together as trolls.

I will keep kicking and screaming about how much fun the game used to be all the way to launch in the hopes that it recaptures some of it's previous enjoyment.

#17: Tabula Rasa does NOT use the Auto Assault engine. They are using a totally different engine. After they scraped what they had when they were on the Unreal 3 engine, they made their own engine, and this is it. It may look similar to the Auto Assault engine, but it is not the same.

Oh and RIP Auto Assault. Oh how I loved thee.

The Core of the game is solid. But the content is nothing special at all compared to other MMO's out there.
In a way I would compair it to City of Heroes. The game mechanics work fine, but there aren't any really 'ooooohhh ahhhhhhhh' moments.

I've been playing the beta with a friend of mine for a few weeks now and we've been saying how this will probably be a really cool game in a few months once the balance and bugs are worked out.
In its current state? No way.
What a disappointment.

I dunno why people are screaming about it.

As Cabezone said, it's that the game is turning in to an average MMO.. below average, IMO. The game was touted as next-gen for a very long time, and still is. When the main guy behind a game bad mouths all the other games that are both out and coming out, saying that those games are not innovative enough and "stale", and then releases the exactly same fucking thing, that's what I'm screaming about.

Every patch has moved this game away from the awesome game it _was_ and replaced it with a ho-hum version of itself. I agree, the combat system was and still is enjoyable. But that's it. And that gets boring after you kill the same mob a few hundred times. There's what, 8 different mobs?

I really hope the next few patches improve things. I'd like to see a few of the things RG's been discussing, such as the capturable bases. And yeah, they may be working right now, but I haven't seen it. Perhaps they could bump up the bane's strength a wee bit so it's a challenge. Or, I dunno, dynamically make it harder or easier depending on how many people are in the area. 6.5 years and this is what they have. What a let down.

Edit: typo.. I learned how to use bold today. wee

At the moment, if you go into NCSoft's online store and pay $5 for the Tabula Rasa preorder, that gets you into the beta. If you then decide to buy the full game from the online store, you get $5 off.

You also get some items that aren't in the game yet, and a 3 day headstart. But if all you do is want to try the game out, $5 isn't too bad.
