In my experience Vista is quite stable, and aesthetically it's amazing. However, it's infused with so much added junk that you're going to lose a minimum of 20 FPS across the board for the majority of your games. It's very difficult to tweak at the moment, primarily due to the fact that the "tweaking community" won't touch Vista with a 10' pole, and you're pretty much on your own. There are also horrendous bugs in virtually every Source-engine game (framerate/audio bugs), and some other show-stoppers as well. Bottom line- for business/school use, it's pretty decent. But start digging out that old XP CD key if you want to play games.
