BioShock Widescreen Woes

Widescreen messed up ... on the 2K Forums has hundreds of posts about problems with widescreen monitor support in BioShock impacting both PC and Xbox 360 owners. At issue is how images are expanded and cropped to accommodate widescreen modes, meaning widescreen users actually get less image than fullscreen users, a situation bordering on irony. There is no good news from 2K or the studio formerly known as Irrational on the forum, and our attempt to contact 2K about this directly has met with no response so far.

widescreen? They have other problems.. Aug 21, 2007, 22:10
Aug 21, 2007, 22:10

I would say the primary problem at this point is that a significant percentage of Bioshock Steam purchasers are unable to play at all. The Steam servers are crawling and crashing. For some reason, despite the nearly-2GB "preload" we all did, they've decided that another half gig or so needs to be downloaded at activation time, a massive transfer they're totally unequipped to handle.

Valve has very clearly not made the necessary investment to allow Steam to handle a high profile release. I feel like a total sucker. At least I can be sure that there will never be a repeat of this ordeal. It's my friendly neighborhood retailer from now on.

And, on topic, it looks like I'll be playing it in a 4:3 box on my widescreen monitor too...

Hopefully, the widescreen thing is a simple fix. But, I don't have a clue. Not good on 2k for such a silly thing.

I'd like to comment that I installed Bioshock at work and at home today and Steam was flawless.

heres another woe for bioshock. the interface is dumbed down for a console. every time you save a game it says not to turn of your system while doing so. only a console gamer is capable of accidentally turning off a system during a save game.

Just found out my old X800XL (Shader Model 2.0) is apparently not supported. This thing wasn't exactly top-of-the-line when I picked it up for Oblivion, but I sorta expected it'd serve me a little better than this (Oblivion was pretty well CPU limited from what I could tell, and HL2 ran and runs quite nicely). My frame rate probably would've blown since I run 1280x1024 with this damn LCD, but it would've been nice at least to be able to try the demo out.

The worst part is that if I upgrade my video card, it probably won't be long before I'll need a processor upgrade. Since I'm running socket 939, that pretty much means a new motherboard so I can use an AM-2.

Lol, as long as there is anything even remotely connected to Steam, it will be bashed in news featuring it. The only complaint I have against Steam is they won't let me activate my boxed retail copy of Sid Meier's Pirates. I've had it since it hit shelves, I am just tired of losing the discs.

Edit : According to some peeps of the widescreengamingforum this is just a FOV issue that doesn't adjust properly.

Still, it again shows that absolutely ZERO percent testing went into this title.

I wish I could still cancel my preorder so I wouldn't be supporting this kind of fucking shite support.

I see this going one of two ways:

1) Oops. Here's the patch.

2) Here's what we did and why we did it.

If 1. Then good. If 2. I suspect crowds with torches. Don't get me wrong. If I hadn't known this, I suppose I wouldn't have cared. I think it's probably not a huge impact on the game. But knowing that the they went with 4:3 over 16:9/16:10. Well, that's just the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Oh, alright, it's like the 10th dumbest thing if I can count the individual Sony press releases over the last year.

I'm also none-to-pleased about the soundtrack "EP" in the LE edition. Now, I'm an idiot. And I know I am going to bite it when I get a limited edition, and if I had paid attention I would have known the "soundtrack" was composed of ONLY 3 tracks of crappy (well, they aren't that bad) Moby remixes. Son of a...

On the bright side, the Big Daddy figure (provided yours was not broken) is pretty neat.

The 40-minute behind-the-scenes DVD is, as always, worthless.

To be fair, I was playing it on my new beautiful 22 WS LCD monitor without a problem.

Of course, that being said, I noticed it still messed with directsound during installation when I expressly specified no.
Right now, I am dealing reinstalling my sound drivers. Whee!

""You will see more in widescreen. We use a different projection matrix; there is no squashing or stretching of the image involved."

"The game will render in full 16:9 aspect ratio, with no letterboxing unless your resolution is not true 16:9."

"Folks, don't fret, there's no letterboxing in 4:3, nor in 16:9. The game will use the most bad-ass resolution available to your video card and monitor."

From the 2K forum, awhile back.

I remember someone else saying crap like this. What was he called again. Oh yeah, Warren Spector. "Deus Ex 2 is not dumbed down!"

This is the laziest "implementation" of widescreen I've had the misfortune to watch in the last three or so years, barring EA's complete ignorance. Well done, Irrational. Way to take the lazy ass way out.

Creston

Edit 2 : "To be fair, I was playing it on my new beautiful 22 WS LCD monitor without a problem. "

Noone is saying that it gives a "problem" as in the game becomes unplayable because of it. However, in the year 2007, with a sizeable number of people now actually having widescreen monitors, implementing a widescreen "solution" that makes you SEE LESS than you would on a normal monitor is just fucking ridiculous.

And apparently nobody noticed this in testing? I guess a widescreen monitor for their testing lab was way too expensive. They tested it on a $300 Dell, and the secretary's old Compaq, apparently.

Well, I don't have any widescreen problems, but my sound is all messed up. Very choppy and crackly. Searching the 2k forums revealed I'm not the only Audigy owner with this problem and no real fix is posted that I could find.

As far as Steam issues, you should have seen the brick and mortar issues I had today. First two stores didn't have it and didn't even get it today (including Best Buy). Circuit City did have it, but I couldn't get anyone to take my money at the register after ten minutes so I yelled an obscenity, chucked the game on the ground, and walked out. 4th store didn't have it but I finally got it at the 5th friggin store I hit tonight.

Just found out my old X800XL (Shader Model 2.0) is apparently not supported.

I'm in the same boat and a little ticked (my X800XL was originally purchased for Oblivion as well :). Against my better judgement I actually went out and bought it today only to find out it wouldn't play on my card (no mention at all on the box regarding the Pixel Shader requirement); fortunately I took it back and with a little fighting I got a refund. AGP cards seem to be getting scarce so it looks like I may be forced to upgrade the entire system. A shame too as the card is still pretty good (imo). PC gaming seems to be turning into a big hassle and almost has me considering just getting a console. It'll probably be easier and cheaper that way (and most games seem to be cross-platform nowadays anyways).

On a side note....any of you think the game suffers from console-itis? The game did install from me and what I saw/experienced in the menus kind of left a bad taste in my mouth.

Hey guys-

Sorry about all the conflict. IG development people (specifically Chris and Rowan who are both on vacation) were trying to take a day off today (we've been working about six months 6-7 days a week). I'm trying to see what everybody's concerns are and consult with the staff.

I know people are frustrated, but we are dealing with internet time here. It wasn't until 7 pm EST that I was able to even talk to anybody in our Australian studio, which is open today (9 AM their time).

I hear you that not everybody was thrilled with the PC launch. And I'm trying to collect information and see what the facts are. PC game development does not function in a matter of seconds or hours, especially when most of the team is on vacation. But I hear you, and we're looking into the issue. I'll only ask you have a bit of understanding as to the time scale that software development issues must occur in.

Best regards,

Ken Levine

Milkman Dan: "I don't think so, Karen... Milkman Dan isnt ever going to die. You see, several years ago, an oriental mystic told me about the ancient secrets of immortality. I can do what I want and I have nothing to fear."

Karen: "You're lyin! My dad said only God can live forever."

Milkman Dan: "What if I'm not lying? What if Milkman Dan has beaten God at his own game... just imagine, if you will, what kind of delicious suffering awaits you at the hands of the most powerful milkman in the universe."

Karen: "You can't do nothin to make me suffer!"
