Preloads for the Bioshock demo have started for Fileplanet members. Demo is apparently going to be released Monday evening.

Yeah, me too. Only I decided to splurge on a high end Velocity Micro to replace my ancient and usually ailing Dell.

The other game that looks like it should make the upgrade worth it is FALL OF LIBERTY---won't be out for a while I guess.

Bioshock was one of 2 games I upgraded my PC specifically to play (the other being Crysis) For what it's worth, my entire upgrade cost less than a new Xbox 360.

And as far as I can tell the auto aim feature is disabled or not there at all in the demo because there were plenty of shots that missed by fractions of an inch that would have automatically hit in other games.

Tumbler, Auto Aim was on by default in the Demo. I turned it off when I first played through (having just recently come into possession of a 360 myself and departing from PC-only FPS playing, I totally suck with the controller... but 'AutoAim' still sounds like a dirty word to me)...

At any rate, towards the end, I was getting my ass kicked because I couldn't hit anything with my Plasmids in the sudden flurry of attackers; I played back through the 2nd time without disabling auto-aim. Trust me, it was *much* easier to hit everything with it on.

There was no need to aim up and down due to the engine
You mean due to auto-aim. If you play one of the Doom source ports like ZDoom and turn off auto-aim, you will see that you do need full mouselook.

Correct. There was no need to aim up and down due to the engine, unless you wanted to shoot projectiles ahead of mobs. There's one serious speedrunner left who used keyboard for turning as of... 3 years ago?

The original DOOM did have mouse aim, btw, for what that's worth.
Not in the currently used way. With Doom there was no vertical mouse aim. You could simply pivot with the mouse but not aim up or down.

You actually couldn't look up and down more than about 45 degrees from center, but you could still hit people directly above you because of the autoaiming.

Prety sure that wasn't auto aiming, but instead because the engine was 2d...

Yup. The Duke3D engine was more advanced than the Doom engine, in that you could fake true 3D in it (ie, have an area that you could both walk on AND walk under, though from what I remember this involved placing windows into wide open spaces and pretend they were walkways) but where aiming was concerned it was all 2D.

I think in the end, whatever system you've practiced a ton with you're going to be best at. Ray gives a good example of how you could be skilled with a keyboard shooter, then switch to mouse and after awhile can no longer even hit anything with a keyboard.

If I try to replay the old Doom and Doom 2 on Ultra Violence with just the keyboard, I get my ass handed to me on a barbwire pillow. If I use one of the many conversions that allow mouse control, I do far far better. But back when the keyboard was the only thing I knew (and the only thing that was possible in Doom), I ran through both games on Ultra Violence without ever really running into any trouble. I even finished Final Doom on Ultra Violence with the keyboard.

I think that if you compare them on a universal playing field, the mouse will come out on top simply for its incredible precision and accuracy. But if you become skilled in a game's environment with a gamepad (albeit with whatever aid the game chooses to give you) and go up against someone skilled with a mouse in their special environment (ie, adapted to mouse use), and against someone skilled with a keyboard in their environment, the difference won't be as profound as we might think.

I remember the first game that made me switch from kb to mouse was Jedi Knight, because it was a fucking bitch to aim at stuff that was above and below you, and with a keyboard it took forever. I started using the mouse, sucked for a few hours, then discovered the Circle Strafe. Heaven had revealed itself.

The poor AI in Jedi Knight never knew what to do against circle strafing either, even the final dark jedi could easily be circle strafed to hell.

Edit : Btw, we like to pretend all haughtily that where console games give auto aim, the PC has "no need" of such cheating ways, and yet it feels like most PC shooters nowadays have auto aim, or at least a hitbox that's larger than their model would suggest. Especially in FEAR I've fired shots that I KNOW were misses and would still take guys out, especially with the sniper rifles.

The only reason I'm buying it on 360 is because my PC can't come close to running it well and I can't afford to upgrade until next year.

Are there any recommended requirements known for the PC? Wondering if my PC can handle it...

I would think it to be possible to make an analog keyboard, however expensive, and thus making it hard to market and then get developer support.

Now thinking on it, Nintendo's Wii-Mote would probably be the best way to do FPS's on a console. With some tweaks.

I'm a hardcore mouse & keyboard guy, but I can see where some sort of one handed gamepad with analog control for movement would be better than the keyboard. That said, it would be a marginal improvement compared to the analog stick vs mouse for aiming. The other issue would be you need a lot of buttons available on that pad to make up for no keyboard.

You don't have to hold down shift to walk instead of run in a console shooter; You have a sensitive thumbstick.

Great. So instead of simply holding down a key or using a _crouch or speed toggle key,_ (and often having the option of doing any of the above) I have to carefully regulate how hard to tilt a stick relative to the rest of my hand? I'd rather take the key--my fifth finger isn't usually doing much besides controlling speed. It actually goes completely useless (balance aside) when using a gamepad because there are so few functions on them.

The user reviews I saw on the FragFX didn't look very positive.

As for PC controllers, keyboard/mouse is good and even though I have a G15 keyboard, I prefer Nostromo/mouse. I also wished there was more support for the SpaceOrb 360. That was a nice controller for its day.

But personally there have been so many specialized controllers for games over the years, it's sorta amazing that a mouse and keyboard hasn't seen more on the console side of things.

The next Unreal Tournament on the PS3 can be controlled via mouse and keyboard. Hopefully, this is something that will become more and more common. If so, I'm ready to give up on PC gaming completely.

Also, never tried it but this looks like it has potential - http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/peripherals/splitfish-fragfx-mouse-controller-for-ps3-245810.php

PHJF the Splinter Cell games did a great translation of the sensitive thumbstick ala the mouse wheel.
