I just grabbed that out of the blue, but I'm referencing keyboard-controlled FPS games.

How many of us played them and were outright lethal? But do we do it now? Even going back and playing the original games, do we wish to keep on playing with the keyboard?
I killed many a mouse user in my day, but I would never go back now.
Neither confirming nor denying originally playing TFC via keyboard,
Ray

PHJF, are we talking about driving games? No. We are talking about an FPS here.

Didn't realize I had to spell it out for some people, but since I do I'll change it to read...

"For FPS's...Keyboard + Mouse > gamepad no matter how you try an spin it"

And I just gave you an instance where the gamepad is entirely better than the keyboard/mouse, no matter how you spin it. You don't have to hold down shift to walk instead of run in a console shooter; You have a sensitive thumbstick.

And I don't know where you get that "18% accuracy" thing. 18% of what? 18% of projectiles across every shooter hit an enemy? What? Is that multiplayer only? Is that Quake or Delta Force? CS:S or AA? In the majority of shooters on the PC in modern times

a) the map is huge and you can not possibly hit with a majority of bullets unless you aimbot (Battlefield games)

b) the guns have a large recoil force and it is not possible to hit with a majority of bullets (Counterstrike, spray n pray)

c) the enemy is moving in a fashion disallowing the majority of bullets to strike him (Enemy Territory, b-hop)

To be honest the mouse+keyboard could use some updating. I could go for a gamepad like device to replace the keyboard. Something with a stick like a gamepads under your thumb for fine tuned movement would be awesome.

A lot like some of the crappy keyboard replacements out there, but with the good stick. Maybe even just a keyboard with the stick below the space key would work.

And as far as I can tell the auto aim feature is disabled or not there at all in the demo because there were plenty of shots that missed by fractions of an inch that would have automatically hit in other games.

Oh but Tumbler, were you on a PC, aiming with a mouse and keyboard, then you wouldn't have missed!

Well the difference is being 'hardcoded' for WASD or say a 360 controller. Me personally any game I've played on both 360 and PC ends in a horrible death for me on the console. I am very gimped when trying to play FPS games on a console, due to unresponsive controls.

But personally there have been so many specialized controllers for games over the years, it's sorta amazing that a mouse and keyboard hasn't seen more on the console side of things.

The entire experience on my PC does not match or best the experience on my xbox 360 in this game.
How do you know that? You haven't played the PC version yet.

Tumbler you would be wrong.

How is anything wrong or right in this arguement? It's just a matter of preference. If the PC looks like a more entertaining experience, play the PC version, if the 360 looks more entertaining, play that.

I'm sick of this Mouse/Keyboard/Gamepad melee that always comes up. The entire experience on my PC does not match or best the experience on my xbox 360 in this game. There are a lot of things I can do to make the PC experience better but I'd rather just drop the stupid game in my 360 and play it!!

What is so wrong with that?

And as far as I can tell the auto aim feature is disabled or not there at all in the demo because there were plenty of shots that missed by fractions of an inch that would have automatically hit in other games.

You actually couldn't look up and down more than about 45 degrees from center, but you could still hit people directly above you because of the autoaiming.

Prety sure that wasn't auto aiming, but instead because the engine was 2d...

Dagok,

I know that Duke3d allowed you to look up and down with the mouse, but that was not necessary for aiming. You actually couldn't look up and down more than about 45 degrees from center, but you could still hit people directly above you because of the autoaiming.

Also as for the PC vs 360 demo..... Folks you gotta remember, that with the 360 all they have to do is make sure it runs on 1 SYSTEM. With the PC they have to make sure it runs on 2 operating system, thousands if not millions of possible hardware combinations, and then min, recommended and max settings.
While everyone loves to scream 'we are being screwed!' Be thankful they are still trying to get a PC demo before the games launch, and the 360 and PC version are being released at the same time.

Tumbler you would be wrong. With Auto Aim 2 things happen on a console game. 1)the targeting reticle will automatically jump to the nearest target, when the targeting reticle is near it. 2)The Targeting Reticle will also 'stick' to target as well.
The reasons for this is to make up for the slow response time and not so precise controls of the gamepad.
With a mouse and keyboard the targeting cursor does not automatically jump to nearby targets near the targeting reticle, nor do they 'stick' and follow the target as well.

As for PC Moniter vs a Wide Screen TV, depending on the distance you sit from the TV and Moniter one may be smaller then the other. But then again I can hook up my 360 to my Wide Screen HD LCD Moniter (and cheaper) with my 5.1 sound card, and still be playing at larger res then my TV.

One quick thing about the Duke 3d vertical axis, the game autoaimed vertically for you.

Duke3d had mouse aiming, it had to with the jetpack and all. Doom did not.

I have just gotten Theif 1 and Theif 2 working again

Don't know why this has dumbfounded me for so long, all I needed to do was uncheck a cpu core in the process managers cpu affinity settings. thus only allowing it to use the first of the two cpu cores.

I bet this same fix would work with systemshock 2.

releasing a demo after the game is out is like not letting critics to see your movie before the general audience ... Of course there are those who don't like to admit that they've wasted their money and will vehemently defend it on this premise alone.
What the hell are you blathering about? Since when were you forced to buy the game on release day?!?

Read carefully: You're allowed to wait for the demo before deciding whether to spend your money.

Frankly, releasing a demo after the game is the very best way to convince me that the two might possibly be based on the same code, and therefore that it is demonstrative of the retail product. This used to be the standard way of doing things, and it was better.

go outside, read a book, play a classic, go get wasted, write a program, buy some shrooms.. fucking enjoy your life rather than wasting it in this anticipatory state.
Hell yes.

Auto aim is a consequence of this input difference implemented by developers.

...and the console controllers inferiority over other input methods. You simply have to make the awkward controllers playable. Without it, playing fps's on consoles wouldn't be an option - at least not a fun one.

There's one way to solve this debate though. Lets get an fps that allows xbox players to face off against pc players. That'll sort the men out from the boys

PC demo should be out at same time as xbox. At this point developers and publisher of BioShock showed me lack of interest in PC community by leaving "us" behind xbox.

Shame. I planned to be nice but now I have other plans thanks to them pi**ing on the PC version of the game. Thanks for showing your true colors 2kGames.

I agree completely, but I do wonder who is to blame. Developers or Publishers? Or is microsoft giving them some sort of $ incentives.

Ray,

One quick thing about the Duke 3d vertical axis, the game autoaimed vertically for you. Which is why you sorry keyboard users could compete at all. No matter how high above you the person was, as long as you had the correct horizontal aim it would hit the person above you.

BTW, I'd have crushed your sorry keyboard using self in Duke, even with the lame vertical autoaiming.
