Upon the release of the Xbox 360 BioShock demo (story),
The Cult of Rapture
(thanks Ray Marden) has word that the PC edition of the demo is to be expected

I have just gotten Theif 1 and Theif 2 working again 
Don't know why this has dumbfounded me for so long, all I needed to do was uncheck a cpu core in the process managers cpu affinity settings. thus only allowing it to use the first of the two cpu cores.
I bet this same fix would work with systemshock 2.
