BioShock PC Demo Nears

Upon the release of the Xbox 360 BioShock demo (story), The Cult of Rapture (thanks Ray Marden) has word that the PC edition of the demo is to be expected "later this month." An official announcement about the PC demo is expected sometime today:
For those of you who are looking for a BioShock demo on the PC, it is in the works and will be out later this month. I'll give you more details about it tomorrow.

but choosing the PC experience because of the keyboard mouse means using a smaller screen, sitting at a desk, getting stereo sound

For FPS's Keyboard + Mouse > gamepad no matter how you try an spin it - auto-aim is for gimps. Smaller, sharper/clearer screen. Stereo sound, wtf? 5.1 on my computer.

Still looks damn amazing, I thought.

No kidding, the graphics in this are very impressive. Very much like Prey in my mind, a ton better game all around though.

I would expect things on the PC to look sharper overall, the comparison shots between prey 360 and prey PC showed this, things just looked a little better on PC. But I like my 46" TV with 5.1 surround sound enough to forgive that problem.

The whole gamepad/auto-aim arguement doesn't make sense to me. Aiming on the gamepad with the assistance of an auto aim feature takes the same skill as aiming with no assistance with a mouse....I don't see why people get hung up on this.

I don't find myself cursing the gamepad when I'm playing games, I just adjust to using it and it's transparent...

I would love to have the option to use mouse and keyboard on some games, mainly RTS games, but choosing the PC experience because of the keyboard mouse means using a smaller screen, sitting at a desk, getting stereo sound. Choosing the 360 experience comes on a 46" TV, 5.1 sound, a comfortable couch, and a controller.

Keyboard/mouse seems far less important than a huge TV and great sound to me... If I had my PC hooked up to my tv and stereo I might feel differently but I don't see myself doing that.

I was a bit surprised to see the XBox demo is only 1.35GB. I was expecting 2GB for the PC demo at least (since the retail version is 8GB), and DirectX and the like won't add that much to the size.

Speaking of file size, I see some people complaining about the supposedly low-res textures in the demo. Is it possible that they were reduced in quality in order to make the demo smaller? Irrational probably would have told us if that's true, but it's still a possibility. Still, if we don't get "high-res" textures in the full version, I doubt the PC version will have them either. We'll have to wait for somebody to mod them in for us, like with Thief 3 and Oblivion.

I noticed almost immediately the low res textures on everything, it's something I tried to point out to the Gears fanboys to little effect. It the one thing that has always bothered me about consoles, the extreme lack of memory for textures. Most console games use a lot of blurring/post processing effects to shine over this problem.

If you ever compare the screenshots of the new Oblivion textures to the shit ones it shipped with, you can see how much they have to compromise for consoles. I doubt Bioshock ships with better textures for the PC.

It's not enough to seriously detract from my enjoyment of the game though.

You'll go into a room and things like doors and statues will be very high res but the walls next to them will have this ugly low res texture.

god, talk about nitpicking. you type of people never really enjoy games because your too busy finding things that are wrong with it.

i just played the demo through 3 times on the 360 and never noticed anything you said once. and yes, im a PC gamer. everytime i played it i was left in awe at how fantastic everything looked.

there are a few dumbed down things, such as collecting things off dead bodies and what not. but i dunno, i find it hard to decide if its actual dumbing down or just streamlining. *shrugs* either way, the demo alone is my game of 07!

I'm torn.

On 1 hand I want to get out of PC gaming as much as possible (save for some gems like Star Craft 2), but on the other I kind of want to play this particular game on a PC.

My laptop *should* be able to handle it (Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz, 2GB Ram, nVidia 8600GM w/ 256MB) but I kind of don't want to bother.

Eh, I'll decide the last possible minute. In the meantime I'll download the 360 demo when I get home.

re: demo. The demo is great but you can tell where Irrational had to trim back some of the FX to get it running at a solid framerate for the 360. You'll go into a room and things like doors and statues will be very high res but the walls next to them will have this ugly low res texture. If you played Gears of War you know exactly what I mean. The PC version is what I'm getting, I want the full on experience.

Actually, I haven't seen the demo, so I don't know what's in it. But I have played the first bit of the game, and I regret it. My life has been slightly miserable ever since.

Actually, it probably ends up:

Bioshock + gamepad + autoaim = newbville.

Theres no auto-aim in the demo that I can detect and with the launch about a week off I dont see them changing that.

Later this month? Who cares? We'll all have bought and played the game by then. I hate the trend of releasing demos after the game is out, though it could be worse.

I agree completely. What happened to the good old days of demos coming out before a game is released.

Hell, we know the game has gone gold, is it really so difficult to get a demo together now that the game is finished? Unless, of course, they are working on the first patch for the game already.

M$ must have thrown a boatload of money at 2K Games to keep this demo a box exclusive. When they say "later this month" I say "post-commercial release". I would almost bet money on that. Almost.
