Rage Announced

This press release announces Rage, id Software's upcoming project previously known by the codename tech5. Rage is a post-apocalyptic shooter that will feature more outdoor areas than previous id games, planned for Windows, Mac, Xbox 360, and PS3, "when it's done." Here's word:
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The creator of classic computer game "Doom," id Software, unveiled on Friday its eagerly anticipated next game, "Rage," in which players fight an oppressive government in a post-apocalyptic world.

The new game will be released for computers running either Microsoft Corp's (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) Windows or Apple Inc's (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) Macintosh operating system, as well as Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony Corp's (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) PlayStation 3 video game consoles.

"It's a bit of a classic story and you are the outsider who comes in and tries to turn the tide in favor of good," id Chief Executive Todd Hollenshead said in an interview.

"Rage" is being built with all-new graphics technology designed by id co-founder John Carmack, who showed off the game at id's annual "QuakeCon" event in Dallas, Texas.

Privately held id did not give a release date for "Rage" or the name of the publisher. Activision Inc (ATVI.O: Quote, Profile, Research), the second-biggest U.S. video game publisher, handles other id games such as "Doom 3" and the upcoming "Enemy Territories: Quake Wars."

Since the breakaway success of "Doom" in 1993 established the "first-person shooter" as a major gaming genre, id's games have been characterized by fast-and-furious gunplay and claustrophobic environments.

"Rage" will represent somewhat of a stylistic break by letting players roam expansive outdoor areas.

"In addition to the shooting elements and killing bad guys with cool guns -- everyone knows we can do that well -- we wanted to show off some stuff that would surprise people," Hollenshead said.

The graphics technology, or engine, underpinning "Rage" is also important since id makes one of a handful of such software packages that are licensed by other game makers.

Hollenshead said the new "tech5" engine would make it easier for developers to design games that are better looking and can be easily modified to run on different gaming systems, a process that normally takes months and pushes up costs.

"It allows a single studio team to make four versions of our game without outside help," Hollenshead said. "You can have massive outdoor environments and make them look glorious down to pixel level without any performance issues."

"id software games always have that dark grungy look. I guess that's their trademark. But I dunno... I don't like the dark grungy look for 10+ years "

What color do you think post-apocalyptic is going to be?

And it IS something else, it's not Doom or Quake!

Oh well, as one of the few people who apparently enjoyed Doom 3, I'll probably pick it up.

Please please please make another Jedi Knight game with this new engine. Please please please.

Actually my hackintosh running on an AMD sempron 3000+ is able to play Prey and the ET universal binary. I'm also able to run XP in a virtual machine for the sole purpose of testing web pages in IE7.

I'm experimenting and liking it as a development platform. I can run Q3 as well. So it's nice not having to reboot into Windows for a quick game of something.

Of course it's not 'worthy' for the bleeding edge, but the more choices, the better. The less booting into Windows, the better.

My only computer now is an Apple MacBook Pro (the new SantaRosa one). By the time Rage comes out, it will no longer be game-worthy.

...when have Apple computers ever been game-worthy?

Interestingly enough, in Carmack's keynote he mentioned that he feels DX9 is a better platform than OpenGL.

does this mean it's a direct 3d game now. giving up the fight?
this should be for everthing but the 360.

Well, the claim it will also run on Apple OSX and that would require OpenGL.

I'm actually kind of glad they're going to release for the 360. I've decided to use that for all possible games and rely only on my BootCamp installation for things like HL2 and such.

This actually has a little hint of a Mad Max world, this could very well be some big fun! And, unlike others, I won't pan a game simply by viewing a small video clip. We got vehicles, good stuff. Better then the recent corridor shooters we've had for a while. And best of all, no acronyms!
And, since it is also coming to the Mac, it should be obvious that it is OpenGL. Mac's don't do DirectX.

I remember a while back, in an interview or story or something, that John Carmack said something along the lines of ETQW would be getting a Linux release, but not to take it for granted that the new id game would be. I thought then that it might be the beginning of the end for Linux support from id, but only time will tell, you never know until it happens.

I haven't been interested in id games since QuakeII. When Quake3 came around I was much more interested in UT and found that to be a much better game. When I saw the first previews of Doom3 I thought it looked terrible and yet many people were raving about it... I never understood the appeal, particularly when FarCry dwarfed it (especially for outdoor environments, as Doom3 couldn't manage them). *shrugs*

Rage sounds so generic, though it matches the "plot" perfectly. I won't write it off now but it sounds like the equivalent of a shit B-movie. If the engine isn't amazing then I imagine it will tank as id has never managed a good singleplayer game.

I'm just surprised they don't mention Linux -Windows & Mac means it's very unlikely to be DirectX so why no Linux port ?
QuakeWars will have a Linux client so we know megatexture works in OpenGL on Linux as well as Windows.

Raven is doing the New Wolfenstein. I imagine they'll be doing the same PR as they did for Quake 4 which is to show NOTHING until they are a few months away from launch.

I though they should give us a first gleam from new Castle Wolfenstein... Maybe a in-game-movie, a pics or something?

Sure, RAGE look good but we have already got a good gleam from it, when ID announce their new Tech 5 engine, so where is the BIG news?

This clinches it. I am officially an old man. ;(

I could care less about this game. Not even a faint echo of the anticipation I used to feel at Id announcements.

What do I do now? Take up golf? Bowling? Barbecuing? Competitive rocking chair rocking?

Please, please, please let the PC be the lead development platform.

Not a chance, pretty sure it was an interview with Hollenshead not too long ago where he said everyone at id was being forced to use a console controler to play test.

They've also announced that the console is the lead platform for them from here on out.

I agree with Hump, this does look just like Motorstorm with the first person shooter part added on. Nothing wrong with that, Motorstorm is a pretty fun game, just not worth buying a ps3 for.

About 2 days ago while driving I was thinking of a game idea about some crap where all your emotions but rage were taken from you. It would be some gory psycho FPS and I thought Rage would be a cool name for it. Then I thought to myself nah Rage sounds like it would be very corny game name. Id read my mind! Their making my corny game!

What's with the simplistic one word and one syllable names for all of their games?
Doom, quake, rage?

Come on the english language is rich with words.

From what I have read and given id's recent performance, I am not particularly interested.

However, I will still wait and see. I am hoping there is a really unique aspect to this or they just completely nail it, making it a damn good game.
Early concerns are crappy vehicles, limited areas, and Fallout 3
Waiting,
Ray
