CRUSADERS, Invasion of Constantinople Announced

Kylotonn announces development of CRUSADERS, Invasion of Constantinople, an action/adventure game planned for PCs and consoles. This seems to be the project announced over two years ago (story) with the preproduction working title Invasion (thanks Frans):
Paris, FRANCE, 12 July 2007 – Creators of Ironstorm™, the Bet on Soldier™ trilogy, and more recently Speedball2™ remake, Kylotonn today announces the development of CRUSADERS, Invasion of Constantinople.

As Action game specialist, Kylotonn devotes all its know-how to this new Action/Adventure title on PC and Next-gen consoles platforms.

Renowned for its rich and original universes, Kylotonn today renews the 4th crusade. The end of 12th century is nearing. The Pope Innocent 3rd launches a new crusade in order to conquest the holy city, given up few years earlier to the Sultan Solomon armies. While the High Franc Barons mobilize for this new great epic, the meeting with Prince Alexis, Byzantine Empire throne descendant, will change the course of history: This crusade will never go further than Constantinople…

- Select one of the three knights engaged in this adventure and fight against Byzantine Empire troopers, in the heart of Crusaders army.

- Choose your equipment among more than 150 weapons of various categories (blades, axes, flails, crossbows…) - Learn new combos by engaging in a Crusaders Faction such as the well-known Templars.

- Get new skills and make your character evolve through a deep apprenticeship besides fencing instructors.

- Provide your character with new armors and equipments.

- Recruit and lead a squadron of up to 4 mercenaries, give them orders and get their help to accomplish your mission.

- Cross about 20 distinct environments through 12th Century Europe and get involved in the conquest of the richest city in the world: Constantinople. Fight in the heart of its most famous monuments in 3D, from Hagia Sophia to the Theodosian Walls…

Kylotonn Studio Creative Director Yann Tambellini gives details on the origin of the game and its creation idea: “As independent developers, we set out to bring a renewal in universes treated in video games. Being an architecture enthusiast, I’ve discovered in Constantinople city a tasty mix of Orient and Occident, which will transport gamers beyond traditional RPG Dungeons and enchanted forests universes”.

Why did Constantinople get the works? That's nobody's business but the Turks.

Wouldn't the crusaders have defended Constantinople and not attacked it?

The Crusaders caused a lot of problems for the Byzantines. They even ended up sacking Constantinople during the 4th Crusade even though it was still in Byzantine hands. It's kind of ironic given that Pope Urban II called for the Crusades primarily because of numerous requests for military aid from the Byzantines.

That said, this game is totally ahistorical. I can't figure out from the press release if this is supposed to be the 3rd Crusade or is just completely made up. If the "holy city" in the press release refers to Jerusalem, then this would be the 3rd Crusade. The problem is: the Sultan Solomon (Suleiman) the press release refers to ruled the Ottoman Empire during the 16th century, at this point the Ottomans were not yet on the scene. Perhaps they mean Saladin when they say Sultan Solomon, which would make sense because he did recapture Jerusalem from the Crusaders in 1187. The problem with that is, that the 3rd Crusade did in fact reach the holy land, although it was unsuccessful in recapturing Jerusalem. If on the other hand, the "holy city" in the press release refers to Constantinople, it was still in Byzantine (and therefore Christian) hands at the time of the 3rd Crusade. The sack of Constantinople by the 4th Crusade was in the 13th century so it makes no sense why Western Crusaders would be fighting in Constantinople "at the end of the 12th Century".

For one brief happy moment I thought this was a sequel to Crusader: No Remorse.

The CRTC needs to be destroyed.

Wouldn't the crusaders have defended Constantinople and not attacked it? Or they could have attacked Istanbul to retake Constantinople. Confusing.

There already plenty of medieval strategy games but not that many good action games based on the period.

Eh, who the heck makes an action game about Constantinople? A strategy game would've made much more sense.
