Gears of War PC?

Kotaku reports on revival of the rumor (or inevitability, depending on your outlook) that a PC edition of Gears of War is in the works. The latest round of speculation is inspired by a video that's available on places like YouTube and Google Video that seems to highlight new PC features in the steroid-enhanced Xbox 360 shooter. The speculation is that a PC edition of the game will be revealed next week during E3. We shall see.

There was some gameplay footage leaked (it's been taken down now) that shows someone playing and they unlock an achievement.

I thought I noticed an achievement pop up in that video...

What ?? High resolution monitor? Ummm.. how about 1920 x 1080. Is that high enough for you? HDTV's have trashed that debate.

Actually, the issue is less about resolution and more about the distance between the user and the screen. PC gamers sit within three feet of the screen, meaning they can read small, fine text easily. Console gamers sit 6-10 feet away from their TV, meaning that small, fine text is much harder to read.

Result: Console games have to use bigger, bolder text and therefore can't fit as much text on-screen at any given time. The Deus Ex UI, for example, would never work on a TV, HD or not, because it would be too hard to read.

BTW: The majority of 360 and PS3 games run at 30 FPS at 1280x720, which by PC standards is rather poor.

You have a business. You can sell to 1/4 of the potential customers or to 3/4 of the potential customers. Don't forget that if you don't make money, you lose your job and/or your business.

Nobody is questioning why publishers/developers cater to the consoles. We are merely pointing out that games have suffered as a result.

Another generic, bland shooter with very little (if any?) new material. You forget we just had STALKER come out, and ArmA.
Armed Assault, which is literally just Operation Flashpoint with pixel shaders? Bad example there!

How would you play Freespace 2 on a console? Seriously.
Given that it's a game designed to be played with an analogue yoke, i'd say it would do quite well on a dual-analogue pad. After all, despite FreeSpace's complexity, you never actually used the majority of the functions - Up, Down, Left, Right,, Roll (Left & Right), Fire Guns, Fire Missles, Drop decoy, Target Escort, Target Reticle, Jump Out and use the comms menu)

Maybe just trim down the comm system to a few less superfluous options (Support Depart?!) and stick it on the d-pad in a rose-menu and you're sorted.

It looks more and more likely that this will be Vista only. There was some gameplay footage leaked (it's been taken down now) that shows someone playing and they unlock an achievement. I've played Shadowrun on Vista and the way the achievement was presented is exactly how is shows on Shadowrun. From what I've heard, you can only implement Windows Live functionality on Vista and if the game has achievements, it has Live.

id recommend GoW over lost planet.

they are both good but i found my frustration level got very high during some levels in lost planet. when you get knocked over in that game you have to go through a whole 'being knocked over' animation that you cant do anything about until he gets up.

but during that animation you can still be hit by projectiles that will re-start the animation.

Gow IS over-rated, but it is fun.

That's great because NWN was a dumbed down Baldur's Gate.

No doubt. I actually only played player made content and 'Hordes'. Like KOTR, I had a gazillion things in my inventory and it didn't seem to matter what I equipped or what stats I took, I could pretty much breeze through it. Baldurs Gate wasn't like that.

Seems like that's how games are these days. I played Prey and it was cool for the art style and environments and what not, but I never felt that I had to 'work' for anything. It's sort of like games are on 'autopilot' these days. I don't know.

At least when I play ETPro, I'm playing humans, they're tough and show no mercy. That's a twitch game with a bit of brains, but even that hasn't been done for years. Just looking forward to a single player or ANYTHING that is worth upgrading my computer for.

Consoles are not an option. For me. I just like to use my brain, if I want passivity I'll watch a movie.

That's great because NWN was a dumbed down Baldur's Gate.

Console games lack the complexity of PC games because most console gamers are inherently not willing or able to spend the necessary amount of time on any single game that would otherwise be required. Or maybe nobody makes complex console games, whether consciously or as a limit on any given system's controller. All the console gamers (xbox mostly) at college were playing simple games in short durations: halo, smash brothers, mario party, what have you. I played sometimes just to kill time but preferred to sit in my room playing Civ4 and Natural Selection; games with some real meat on them.

When you have people lapping up Halo and NFS Underground there isn't any reason to give them anything else. Something easy to pick up and play, at any time, with some flashy graphics and big explosions. PC games have simply never been about that.

you know that's the whole point of the game's cover system right?

yeah i know the game. in fact i finished it twice. once in coop and once in single player. the cover system is for pansies. how can you even see anything across the map if your head is behind a wall or ducked under a block of stone? its stupid. might as well use hacks that allow you to see thru walls.

I agree with Jerryk, games seem to just suck these days. I've been meaning to buy an uber system since Doom 3, which we all know sucked. Then Oblivion, then Gothic 3, etc etc.

I basically am almost finished catching up on most games that I want to play that aren't 'new'.

I liked Knights of the Old Republic and that seemed like a dumbed down NWN game, but it was fun. I tried Halo, didn't get it. I don't know, it just seems that the tech has gotten better but the actual gameplay more shallow, or just broken.

Like this Shadowrun game, is actually crippled for PC users on purpose. Yeah, like I'm going to buy that.

How would you play Freespace 2 on a console? Seriously. Anyways, off to play some Wolf ET, at least the old games still work (except HL).

And Halo! You decrepit and pathetic excuse for an FPS! How dare you have more than three types of enemies with any decent AI!

More like:

- How dare Halo introduce a dumbed down, newb-friendly regenerating health system!
- How dare Halo make players feel like they are constantly wading through thick pea soup!
- How dare Halo have some of the worst, most repetitious level design ever!

Fixed.

As for GoW, I haven't played it myself so I can't judge it. However, my friend played it and said it was too easy and repetitious so I'm going to go ahead and assume that the game is wholly overrated.

Um Jeykk, look at the games you pointed at, then look at the years they were released, then go look at the consoles and console games were like at the same time.

Okay. The games I mentioned were released in the late 90s/early 2000. That was before FPSes gained mainstream popularity on the consoles. I believe that supports my original point of PC-exclusive shooters being the best shooters.

But the reason games today are designed for all platforms is due to the money they will get back. Not to mention it's very easy to do Xbox/360 ports to the PC.

Yes, that much is obvious. I was never arguing about the reasons why publishers flock to consoles. I was just pointing out that cross-platform development has resulted in a lack of classic shooters because they have to cater to the lowest common denominator.

As for Tribes on Consoles, wasn't there a Tribes game for a Sony console? As for it not working? I think it could, but you'd have to use the 'kits' ala Battlefield 2/2142, and put the time into a decent and easy to use UI.

Yes, there was a Tribes console game. Tribes: Aerial Assault, as I mentioned. And it was horrible. It is impossible to capture the speed, mobility and skill that epitomizes Tribes with a gamepad. Gamepads aren't quick or precise enough and don't have enough buttons. It's just not feasible. If you don't believe me, go to Gamespot or IGN and look at some videos of Tribes: Aerial Assault. Then go to Youtube and look up "Tribes Legacy." You will never, ever, be able to replicate the experience shown in the Tribes Legacy video on a console. It's that simple.

Wow. So many haters here. And why? Another game might be coming to the PC from a console. Oh, the humanity! Oh, those heathen console owners! Do they not see the greatness that is the PC? Do they not know the depths of complexity that their simplistic ways overlook? Blasphemy! Gears of War?! I skoff at you and your over-rated graphics and simplistic plot line and your....your horrid cover system. And Halo! You decrepit and pathetic excuse for an FPS! How dare you have more than three types of enemies with any decent AI! Yes. How dare you track that crap in here! Console gamers.

I get the feeling some of you folks worry WAY to much about why other people liked Halo or Gears of War. Me? I liked them both. Gears of War was fun, didn't have to be deep, but it was visceral and never got boring to look at. Halo had some nice pacing, and a good story, although it lagged in parts, but honestly, I never thought there was anything wrong with it to the point that some folks on here suggest.

I just know that I had hell'a fun with Halo with splitscreen multiplayer. I know. Blasphemy.

And for my money, GoW pantses Lost Planet...but both are entertaining.

Heh.

Too bad they don't make consoles with a keyboard and mouse and a high resolution monitor. Then they could make complex games and half decent FPSs. Might even consider buying one if they ever did that.
