I'll be honest - I find the Fallout 3 conversations impossible to follow.
Everyone is jumping to conclusions. Everyone is quick to hate.
Don't get me wrong, I understand. Mostly. I'm quick to hate all the faux X-COMs, and I'm quick to hate whatever Strategy First is kicking around for the next Jagged Alliance. These games, much like Fallout, were isometric turn-based games. X-COM pure tactics, Jagged Alliance a mix of tactics and RPG, Fallout pure RPG. The three are comparable. Not surprisingly, I loved all 3.
However, I'm ok with what's going on with Fallout 3 right now. I've said a thousand times I'd prefer it called Fallout: Adventures or something, as it's clearly taking a different path through the universe. It's not just being updated, it's being altered.
But that doesn't make it bad. If you can get over the wrong name, it's a return to the universe we love with some of the mechanics we love. How many of them? We need to wait and see. Will it be a good game? Again, we need to wait and see. Oblivion, for its faults and shallowness, was a ton of fun to play. A ton.
I imagine Fallout 3 will be the ame. People just need to accept that it's a different Fallout. If you can do that, you'll probably love it.
I can understand why some people can't do that, though. I just don't want to read the whining anymore. I'd advise you to wait and see. See if it's fun. Beyond that, see if it's fun yet still maintaining enough of what Fallout was to be as worthy of the name as some of the other offshoots.
Lastly... if I can't kill kids I'll be peeved. Who takes that out of the game? What says "nihilistic post-apocalyptic world" like chopping down toddlers with a chaingun?
