Soldier of Fortune Sequel?

EBgames now lists the upcoming release of Soldier of Fortune: Pay Back, offering a November 13, 2007 release date for this unannounced game that would seem to be the next installment in Raven's brutal SoF series. The only details are that title, release date, and word that Activision is the publisher.

I just booted SoF 2 up again for the first time in years. I just got a bad case of motion sickness, too. I'm wondering what Half Life will be like...jeez, people are still bitching about SoF 2? Get over it, the game is what...5 years old?

People bitch too much about these old games.

doing the same thing over and over gets boring. You know where everyone is going to be at, because there are optimal positions for ever set stock map. The dynamic play of RMG makes it far more fun, and keeps the pace up more imo. You think on your toes, on the move, constantly. You don't know where the sniper might be hiding, or if there are 5 guys waiting around the side of a corner.

There is of course this slight mystery in stock maps, but most of the time, no where near the extent that RMG is able to take it. Dynamic play rather than over done boring maps any day.

Pft "meh" to the randomly generated ones eh? For people that enjoy playing outside of a shoe box, those maps were wonderful.

For those people who don't care about good level design, those maps were wonderful.

The RMG ladders had some of the best people that game had ever seen. If they don't keep it in the new game, it's just another run of the mill FPS that I'm bored of. Sof2 set its self apart, but if SOF3 goes backwards... than what's the point?

I'm sorry, SoF2's Multiplayer was off the hook. Fast, nasty gunfights, big maps (meh to the randomly generated ones). Had a kickass time with CTF. And grenade physics that made sense (looking at you, CS).
QFT brother, I played MP on that game for YEARS. I loved running with the flag and bouncing grenades off the door headers to kill guys running after me.

Unfortunately if Activision is handling it and not Raven, I have a bad feeling we're going to see another Tribes Vengence ...

Kenn pops his head in for a rare appearance!

Yeah, this sounds like franchise milking, not a franchise reinvigoration.

For old Raven games that deserve a return, I nominate Heretic! Hexen comes 2nd. "Horshack!!!"

Raven isn't developing this game. And it's Activision Value that's publishing it.

Ouch.

I highly doubt we will get the bloody pick off body parts system from SOF2, it will be a generic bloodless dude just falls to ground system like all the rest.

I liked some things about it, but the antiquated checkpoint save system (the patched quicksave support was buggy, so it doesn't really count) and excessive game length made the game quickly become a chore.

I didn't really have any problems with the checkpoint system. Really ramped up the intensity and kept things interesting. Also didn't have any problems with the length. ~20 hours is fine for a shooter with as much variety as Far Cry.

My biggest gripe with the game is the inconsistent AI. You could be lying on the floor right next to them in broad daylight and they'd walk right past you, but later, at night, you could be hiding in a bush 300 feet away and they'd spot you instantly.

SOF is one of my favorite FPS of all time because of its replayablity factor, thanks to the infinite gibbing. You could blast parts of heads, whole heads, arms, legs, and the chars would react accordingly. You could replay a single scene 10 times and change the way you entered the room, etc, for a whole new experience. SWAT 3 had perma-decal on the bodies too, so you could see where you shot them. Awesome games.

After that, it all went to shit (can I say that here?) with the unreal ragdoll effect, followed by havok and their 'no gibbing' engine restrictions. Now it's all 'hollywood' stuff like HL2, all flash no substance.

SoF2 had fantastic MP, but doesn't anyone seem to remember the completely retarded A.I. that was the hallmark of the series? And how is it that a SoF game that was never officially announced going to be released in November? We need more details on this.

I always liked the slightly nonrealistic (even surreal) nature the first game had. Throwing around little blocks of C4 like grenades, the non-branded weaponry, the completely insane things done for the sake of gameplay (the reload speed on the shotgun, for instance). SOF2 lost a lot of that, sacrificing to the god of Realism that's overtaking FPSes these days.
