Ships Ahoy - Overlord

This press release announces that Overlord is now available for PC and Xbox 360. A PC demo of Triumph Studios' action adventure is available for download (story), and the 360 demo is on XBLA. Word is:
Over 750,000 gamers have already turned evil, and that's just from the demos. Now, unleash a full, uninhibited reign of terror as Codemasters today announced that Overlord, the highly anticipated, twisted, fantasy Action/Adventure game has shipped to retail outlets nationwide. Overlord is available for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and the PC, and is rated "T" (Teen - Blood and Gore, Crude Humor, Suggestive Themes, Use of Alcohol, Violence - content suitable for persons ages 13 and older) by the ESRB. The creation of Dutch developer Triumph Studios, Overlord is all about being ruthless, determined, and even a little despotic, as players pillage lands, conquer kingdoms and rise to be proclaimed the new, all-powerful Overlord. At the heart of the game lies an array of impish, gremlin-like creatures known as the Minions, and their presence provides Overlord with its deliciously dark comedic touches.

In Overlord, players will amass armies of up to 50 Minions from all four Minion types as they explore and conquer the rest of the fantasy world's twisted domains, with seven corrupt heroes to defeat, a Dark Tower to rebuild, and the Legion of Terror and other destructive spells to unleash. Whether Brown fighter Minions, Red fire throwing Minions, Green assassin Minions or Blue healer Minions, these little buggers will always be there for their master, ready to sacrifice themselves and their lives in servitude of the Overlord.

With the ability to be directly controlled by players, the Overlord's Minion horde will obey every command, no matter how devastating or depraved it may be. Indeed, Minion loyalty knows no limits and their bravery borders on stupidity, but they are the perfect slavish little demons to send on sheep killing, farm razing, village pillaging, house burning, beer guzzling, axe-wielding missions.

For more information on Overlord, be sure to visit the official game website at: http://www.codemasters.com/overlord. There gamers can sample Minion mayhem by downloading the Overlord playable demo for the PC, also available from Xbox LIVE Marketplace for the Xbox 360 videogame and entertainment system. Additionally, be sure to check out the Desktop Minion e-toy and the "Rate My Evil" interactive leader board.

Hopefully they fixed the controls. I liked the Demo but not being able to fully customize controls is a no sale. We shall see.

I gotta upgrade my computer. The demo seemed fun. But during install it said my system did not meet minimum requirements! And boy did it not, man it ran so bad I could not enjoy it.

Your minions will arm themselves using battlefield debris - frying pans, chefs hats, sabres, they don't care so long as it hurts.
cool

Yar, it's the first game in quite a while I've been stoked about. Ready for some Age of Gonad and Bioshock now too!

Problem is you need finer control than the keyboard-and-mouse setup offers on the PC. Play enough battles requiring simultaneous attacks from a gremlin horde and your antihero, and you'll notice a huge difference when using a gamepad. As is now becoming the standard, Overlord maps its controller layout to the ubiquitous Xbox 360 pad -- the left stick moves the master, and sweeping the right stick gives total control of the minions. So if you don't already own a gamepad, add that to the price tag. (Current 360 owners are obviously in the clear.)

the xbox live demo has been out for a while now. i really enjoy the game. its fun seeing a farm that needs to be destroyed so you send out 6 goblins to smash the place up and you dont have to lift a finger.

just oversee the destruction

I hope they aren't saying a game pad offers finer control. Sounds more like a cop out after they avoided creating a real keyboard/mouse interface when porting it to the PC. Oh well, not that this is any different than most console ports.

Last time I got real excited about a game sort of like this was Evil Genius, and that was a big boring flop.

I played the demo on xbox live a couple weeks ago and was VERY impressed. The noises and voices the goblins make as they equip debris (MINE MIIIINE!) and the way you can beat the living stuffing out of your court jester and he keeps getting back up sold me on it right from the start.

It's fun, but simplistic. I'll be getting the Xbox version though, due to my PC not being very lucky as of late when it comes to running games it technically should. (Gothic 3 comes to mind)

The controls felt very natural on the xbox. Didn't need to adjust a single thing. It isn't truly an RPG or a deep enough game for me to sacrifice precious bittorent download space to install to my PC, but it is more then worthy of a console purchase.

Firstly, I don't think anyone had any luck running Gothic 3...

Secondly, I don't understand your logic... The game isn't good enough to pirate, but you'll quite happily buy it at an inflated price on a console?

The demo was fun as hell. I definitely want to buy this game. Kudos to Codemasters for successfully developing a great-looking product and getting us excited for it. Positive word-of-mouth is the best publicity.

"collect 50 minions from 4 minion types" four? Man this game sounds simplistic to the extreme. Anyone played it? Was it fun?

When they say 'type', I think they mean 'class'.

I think the minions come from 4 classes (possibly elemental, because I know there's a fire class), but there are many varieties, not just the little goblins seen in the demo & promo material. The review in PCZone shows a large lumbering ogre for one.

edit - ok, i'm wrong... talk about stifling variety :/
